DISCLAIMER --READ THIS-- please note i do NOT want to start another DRM/CC/etc-related flame war here. this is all my opinion, which i realise may well not be shared by some here; i'm not interested in debating that here, i'm not trying to stir that up, and i ask that we please not lose tempers here; if you don't agree, then please just agree to disagree, or consider emailing nettwerk in support of their actions. ;) but, i thought this might be useful for some people here. i suspect some of the details in here might be a bit inaccurate; for example after i sent it i noticed a paring of the names `nettwerk' and `EMI' somewhere, so now i'm wondering if they're still independent at all. can anyone confirm? also in recent years there *haven't* been `several releases a year' from nettwerk i've been interested in, but it's been true in the not-so-distant past so who knows? ;) in any case, the general gist of it certainly expresses my current thoughts on the issues. speaking of all this, has anyone got anything to say about _chimera_? am i missing much? i liked _poem_, the last thing i heard by them, even though i half-felt it was a little too slick and a little too commercial in some ways. though in terms of time telling - the fact is i haven't pulled it off the shelf since a while after it was released... - -damon To: info@nettwerk.com Subject: feedback hi there - i'd like to give you some (reasoned, rational) feedback on your recent decision to start using `copy control' on new cds, a move i never expected from nettwerk - big industry bad boys maybe, but not nettwerk. normally i'd snap up any new release by delerium, and i was excited to hear about _chimera_ coming out. i was very disappointed to see the CC logo however, and decided on moral and practical grounds to forego purchasing the album despite my interest in hearing new material from the band. my objections are twofold, really. first in practical terms, i often play back cds on computer systems NOT running one of the `majority' operating systems these cds are supposed to be designed to work with. so a large proportion of the time when i might want to listen to the cd, i could be unable to do so. also, i like to have the ability to `back up' my cds to computer in case of theft and for convenience in playback. copy control, obviously, exists to prevent me from doing this, despite it falling perfectly under `fair use'. secondly, i strongly object to this trend towards `copy control' on cds on moral grounds. as someone who buys a *lot* of music (often after hearing a sample or a track online in mp3 or ogg format) i *abhor* being treated like a criminal and having my rights to use and back up my purchases infringed upon by an (ultimately futile) attempt to impose arbitrary restrictions. in truth, the addition of copy control is the only thing that makes me even vaguely tempted to infringe copyright; normally if i am interested in a band or artist i will buy a cd, but i refuse to buy cds that are `copy controlled'. finally, in practical terms you should really consider embracing new technologies anyway, instead of fighting an ultimately losing battle against them and probably losing a lot of your otherwise satisfied customers (like me!) along the way. i thought nettwerk was doing some interesting things in this area but if so you're undermining it by using `copy control' on your discs! realistically, people who want to copy cds for illegal reasons will still find a way to do it no matter what technological barriers you put in place. so you achieve no net benefit while alienating some of your most loyal customers. please consider stopping this trend before you end up regretting it. personally, i will not buy any of your releases which feature `copy control'. and normally nettwerk puts out a few releases a year i might be interested in. consider my business lost until you make some changes. thanks for listening. here's a little reference material for you, though i'm sure you're already pretty well aware of the issues! http://ukcdr.org/issues/cd/ http://www.eff.org/cafe/drmgame/copy-protected.html http://dontbuycds.org/rant.htm http://dontbuycds.org/ http://www.fatchucks.com/z3.cd.html - ----- End forwarded message ----- - -- dl+ecto@usrbin.ca: protecting my real address since 2002 (too late!) > EWS starts here! < ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jul 2003 23:00:02 -0600 From: Neal Copperman Subject: another cdbaby order Lisa Cerbone's new CD has inspired me to zip out and make another CDBaby order. I've got a few things on my plate, including: the new Grace Hearn/Michael Savage (formerly Hand to Mouth) Annabelle Chvostek (Canadian folk/jazz singer. Got a free CD at Folk Alliance and it won't play in hardly anything, and the one place it plays it's very staticy. But the music is quite interiguing.) I think I have most of the main CDBaby suggestions, but you never know. later, neal np: Afropop Worldwide on the radio ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #212 **************************
