I wrote up a list of what to bring, and it turned out somewhat longer than I expected when I started. After writing it up and posting to nields-nook, I got a lot of feedback, incorporated that, and posted to some other lists. Again the next year, and the next... After updating and reposting the text three years in a row, I made it into a web site in the spring of 2000, and have been updating that ever since: http://cos.polyamory.org/frfflist.html This message is being posted to: nields nook, alt.music.moxy-fruvous, edheads, dar-list, ecto, suspects, falcon-ridge, the hollow If you know of any other mailing lists that this posting would be appropriate for, let me know. The Blue Man Group's "The Complex" tour came to Connecticut, with Tracy Bonham and Venus Hum opening. It was the best non-Tori "big" show I've seen in a *long* time, and was stunningly notable for the fact that I really, really liked all of the acts on the bill. I'd lost track of Tracy Bonham ages ago -- she never really did much for me back when she was all the rage, but the intervening years have been good for her artistically (if not career-wise), and I liked her set a lot. She was accompanied by a guitar player, and a keyboard player who also did a spoons solo on her inspired cover of PJ Harvey's "50 foot Queenie", which ended the set. The crowd was really into her, so that the merchandise table was sold out of the EP she's been selling on this tour by the time I got there. (Fortunately, JeffW went to the show in Boston a few nights later and picked one up for us -- it was worth the wait.) The second openers turned out to be the musical discovery of the year so far: Venus Hum. They are a trio from Nashville (!) fronted by Montana native Annette Strean, who looks like Molly Ringwald circa _Pretty In Pink_ (but with darker hair), and sings like she grew up listening to a *lot* of Bjork records, which her bio confirms that she did (along with KaTe, which is always a good recommendation). Their music is electronica in the vein of Frou Frou, Bjork, and Lamb (it occurred to me that I would travel many miles to see a bill with both Lamb and Venus Hum on it). The two boys in the band played racks of keyboards and were armed with IBooks, as was Annette's husband, who sat on a chair on the side of the stage and controlled the (really neat) video projections that accompanied every song. Over it all was Annette's incredible voice, which fit the material perfectly. It also helped that she looked like she was having the time of her life up there on stage. They were selling their CD, _Big Beautiful Sky_ at the show for $10, so of course I snapped it up -- and haven't been able to stop listening to it. This past weekend woj and I were in Boston for a couple of Red Sox games, and the weather was perfect. Driving around Boston with Venus Hum blasting on the car stereo was just the thing -- it's a perfect summer driving record. I would highly recommend checking out Venus Hum if any of the comparisons I mentioned above appeal to you. There are sound samples and all sorts of other stuff at . I'll be keeping an eye on their tour schedule, too -- I'd love to see them do their own show sometime. (Oh yeah, and the Blue Man Group rocked as well. Incredible show. Tracy Bonham was part of their band, and sang quite a few songs -- and Venus Hum did a couple as well, all from _The Complex_, which I can also highly recommend if you like their tribal brand of highly percussive music.) Less than 48 hours to Falcon Ridge! =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #209 **************************
