Terami put on an outstanding show. The best wed ever seen her perform. She was performing with her partner Kevin. Terami plays piano and sings. Kevin adds all kinds of cool electronic/techo textures to Teramis songs. Terami is a really interesting songwriter. The stories in her songs are unique and come from a very heartfelt place. Terami played many of our favorites such as Stained, The River, Raising the Dead and Madeline. Terami also introduced a number of new songs last night which are all excellent. She is working on a new CD release. Her songwriting has really grown. One of her new songs entitled Astronaut is really amazing. Terami comes from the Tori school of female piano playing singer songwriters. However, it seems like Terami is beginning to transcend her influences and is finding a solid voice of her own. It is obvious that her consistent touring has made her a much stronger performer. Each time we see her she just gets better and better. The GVC was full last night. Many who came to see Terami were old friends and fans. However, there were quite a few new converts as well judging by the number of CDs that were being sold. Terami seemed surprised and pleased that she was called back for two encores. At the end of the night she said with a smile, Thats it. Youve heard my complete repertoire. Billi and I first met Terami last December when she played on the same house concert bill with Vienna. The house concert was at Phil (Hudson) and Cheryls place in San Francisco. Terami and Vienna are friends. We have seen them play together several times since then. Terami is heading for the East Coast next month. She mentioned that she will be doing a RAINN benefit show with Emm Gryner in Philadelphia. She will also be playing other dates on the East Coast as well. When she sends out a newsletter announcement I will forward it to the list(s). I highly encourage you folks on the East Coast to check Terami out. She is a really sweet and genuine person who deserves support. First and foremost, she is a wonderful singer/songwriter and performer. I am sure that many of you would really enjoy her music. Here is her web site: http://www.terami.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jul 2003 15:01:15 -0700 (PDT) From: alberto carrasco Subject: Natacha Atlas in Chicago... Saw her show last night in Chicago, at Hothouse, a hip jazz club in the bohemian South Loop area of Chicago's downtown. My primary knowledge of Natacha (Egyptian by way of Belgium) comes from her Gegida CD (1999), a terrific blend of traditional Arabic melodies and vocals and subtle contemporary Euro-dance rhythms and sampled sounds. The first thing that strikes you when she takes the stage is "Jeez, Natacha sent her Mom out as opening act?" Ahhhh... the wonders of Photoshop and the contemporary album cover... and second, her voice, so powerful on record -- it's immediately clear her delivery is a studio creation. Unlike Lisa Gerrard, or our beloved Happy, whose live sound even exceeds their recorded work, Natacha's voice was flat and thin and completely overwhelmed by her musicians. I went looking for a sublime experience of somewhat authentic World music but got a surprisingly tepid performance of the lamest imitation Western dance music I've sat through for longer than I care to remember. She got the biggest response from the yuppy hipsters in attendance who were there to "shake their groove things", so that's exactly who she catered to. The normally sedate jazz club atmosphere was turned into a discotheque at Natacha's urging and the concert experience was unceremoniously thrown out the window. I'd never heard her sing in English (if I had, I would never have attended) as her lyrics were of the shallowest, bad R&B variety. I tried to persevere to the end but the 20-minute drum solo (I timed it and left at the 20-minute mark) was just too much. Drummers of Burundi, her band was not. The star of the night was probably the bass player, who held down the funk all night, yo -- admittedly not exactly why you go to see a potentially Ecto act. Anywayzee... if she comes to your area, proceed with caution. Honestly, you're better off picking up a CD. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Maybe there is someone on this wonderful list who knows >singer and title?? I can say with a fair degree of certainty it's Lori McKenna, though I don't recognize the recording itself. Sounds like it could well have been off her available-only-at-shows-but-apparently-soon-to-be-more-widely-available disc "The Kitchen Tapes", but that's just speculation (she seldom strays from the Northeastern US in her touring, making the disc rather scarce here in the midwest). http://www.lorimckenna.com/listen/ for a track off that disc for comparison, though vocally some of her other material is a closer match (see samples at http://www.lorimckenna.com/order/ ). bob ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #207 **************************
