They were wonderful. The singer, Sally Ellyson, has a marvelous instrument; its tone is so achingly pure. The music was as rich and rustic as a tapestry. Kudos to the two mandolinists/guitarists, Steve and Gary, and the steel pedal guitarist. The atmosphere was very living room-friendly, the musicians looked relaxed. This belied the wonderful music they effortlessly produced. In addition to performing material from "Rabbitsongs," Hem did some new material, and some covers of songs by Springsteen and Randy Newman. (An covers e.p. is being sold on the road). Don't miss them if they come to your town. Their folk and country music hints at a mythic, mystical American spirit. - --Craig __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! I've never heard Leona Naess before; I have heard Kristin Hoffmann once--my impression was that she has a few really good songs and a lot of others that I didn't think all that much of: Leona Naess < http://www.leonanaess.org/ > July 23rd - Pianos; New York < http://www.pianosnyc.com/ > 9:00 pm 158 Ludlow at Stanton phone: 212.505.3733 Kristin Hoffmann < http://www.kristinhoffmann.com/ > Tuesday, July 22nd thru Saturday, July 26th in NYC Caffe Vivaldi 32 Jones Street (W. 4th & Bleecker) (212) 691-7358 (you can call to reserve a table) NO COVER Show Times: July 22nd: 1 set: 10 pm July 23rd: 2 sets: 10 pm & 11:30 pm July 24th: 2 sets: 10 pm & 11:30 pm July 25th: 2 sets: 10 pm & 11:30 pm July 26th: 2 sets: 10 pm & 11:30 pm ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Jul 2003 14:33:24 -0400 From: DanStark <2003.carnivore99@verizon.net> Subject: Re: Looking for NYC Concerts 7/21-23 Julia Darling, Acoustic show Monday 9:00pm @ The Living Room, corner of Stanton & Allen St. Admission is free, tip bucket for the artist gets passed around. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jul 2003 05:39:32 +0200 (CEST) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: This week in music - Ane Brun/Dadafon Molde has never been known for a town where lots of stuff happens, but that changes radically for one week in July. For a town with less than 25000 inhabitants 100000 people visiting in one week is rather remarkable. International Jazz Festival is famous among musicians and usually it is never a problem to get them to come here either. After 9/11 though it has been hard to get those americans to take the trip across the ocean. I hope that will change in the near future so that there will be more Jazz at the next year's festival. BUT there were a couple of very ecto-friendly concerts. Ane Brun currently living in Stockholm but originally from Midsund an island not far from here opened a three concert night. If I was gonna compare her to someone it would have been Mae Moore - maybe more in the way she looks than her music perhaps which very much stands on its own. Strong set of songs and a very nice debut album two months ago. She got a scene persona which really grabs you from the start and with short stories about songs and whatever inbetween she was for me a very pleasant surprice. She and her band really enjoys playing and the big enthusiastic crowd that night did clearly help alot. Another young debutant did follow her - Natalie Nordnes is only 18 years old and got Laura Nyro as her big influence. She very clearly got a huge potensial both as a songwriter and an artist. Still she got too few songs to draw from, but I guess that will change very soon. A young artist to keep an eye on. The BIG concert for me this week was without a doubt Dadafon tonight. The fun thing is that earlier this year the singer and songwriter Kristin Asbjxrnsen's other band Krxyt (Kroeyt) participated in the opening of the building where the scene is located. Kristin is probably the biggest talent Norway got at the moment both as a songwriter and a singer. The energy she displays on stage is impressive and somehow she is more loose in Dadafon than in her main band. They are hard to place really musically as they do almost whatever the do feel like - for example before they even entered the stage a piece of her music was played where different movies of the same face were displayed on several sculptures each singing different tones making strange harmonies - very clearly jazz inspired. With her on stage Kristin got guys on bass, cello, guitar and drums. She herself plays with the instrument she got - a voice that is amazing beyond most of what I've ever heard and an energetic and pleasant scene persona. It helps that she dresses and looks like a nymph - sometimes she moves gracefully and then stumbles into a wild dance. The rest of the band doesn't really need to do much, because she grabs the attention and won't give it away. 100 minutes later they did leave us really baffled still wanting more - it is going to be really hard for any artist to top this one. I have to get their album "Visitor". I highly recommend both Dadafon and Kristin's other band Krxyt. - -- Yngve n.p. Dadafon is still playing in my head n.r.
