Apart from its smug "Oh, I'm being soooooo clever" air, it comes across to me as petulant and patronising. I haven't heard the album, but from what I've read it's quite a change of direction. Surely she must have expected some sort of comment or criticism? She's acting as if any dissenters are idiots, stuck in the past and having no idea of the prevailing music climate. "Get with the program" she seems to sneer "I'm now on the inside of the tent pissing out, and you're just going to get pissed on". Maybe that's just my take on it. Meanwhile the Onion's AV Club review the album: www.theonionavclub.com/reviews And, personally, I kinda like "Flower" -- i think it's probably one of the dirtiest, funniest songs I know. I think it was in a recent Entertainment Weekly that an article/interview with Liz appeared, talking about the new record, obviously. It focused on the idea that Liz made this album in order to become a famous rock/pop star. Stratosphere, world-renowned, not just niche-adored. She worked with two producers, including Michael Penn, and, while happy with what she got, she wasn't satisfied that she had real hit quality; and so in came the Matrix production team and voila, a bunch of tunes gunning for the hearts of the radio programmers. This I understood. But what surprised me in the article were Liz's statements that she was basically over the whole indie scene even when she was doing Exile in Guyville. The article seemed to say that Liz has wanted to be big-time famous for a while but was kinda pigeonholed with Exile. Maybe I read that part wrong, but the whole "not being an indie rat" thing definitely stuck out. It sounded like revisionist history to me, because from what I remembered of 10 years ago, when Exile came out, and then a couple years later with Whipsmart, was that all the articles, reviews, and interviews in alternative weeklies, Rolling Stone, Spin, CMJ, etc. talked about this breakthrough indie/alternative darling and how she was all indie-cool panache. Hip, sexy, potty-mouth, brazen, too cool for school. But then I realized that a lot of that stuff was attached to her by the critics and the fans (me too, cuz i was an indie-nerd wannabe) and who knows if she really was past the indie scene, or if she's just now making it up? I mean, I remember when she made her debut on Letterman and she was palpably scared shitless, eyes closed, voice quavering. There must have been some huge drive for this girl with terrible stage fright to get up and perform on national tv for millions of people. Then I saw her, what, 5 years later at Lilith Fair on the main stage, and she sang with ease and strength, and you could tell that she had been working hard to improve her voice and defeat her performance fears. Maybe it was all incremental steps to get her to the point where she could make that big pop album. (don't forget her helping out on Sheryl Crow's latest album and appearing with her as a backup singer on the late night circuit). Or maybe she WAS a hardcore indie queen, and then she outgrew that phase of her life and now she wants to live the celebrity lifestyle? She can change her mind over the course of ten years, right? I dunno. I'm giving myself a headache. I went back and listened to whitechocolatespaceegg last week and really enjoyed it. I think I'll stick with the first three albums for now. It was just awsome as you can imagine..! Happy looked and sounded great as ever! I feel so lucky to have seen her twice now within 6 months! What was extra nice was: as well as Bill accompaning her again, Bon and Hansford also accompanied her! Man, can you even imagine such a thing? It made it even the more special.. what an honor for her as well as them. What presence for one stage............! The songs were: 1. That *new* song that I (and prob everyone else) doesn't know the name of yet... 2. Look for the Child 3. If Wishes Were Horses How Beggars Would Ride 4. Collective Heart 5. Ra is Such a Busy God 6. Can't Let Go (wow!) 7. The First To Cry (double wow!!) She sang and played this solo. She said it was her mom's favorite song and she used to ask her to play it. 8. Tivoli 9. When the Rain Came Down (just incredible!) She said the new album will hopefully be out in November now.. although might be December although if December then that prob means January (-; Man, the wait the wait the wait!! All good things in all good time..! Gong was as crazy and funky and fusiony as ever! Man, what power! They rocked. Bon whaling on guitar, Handsford Rowe funking out on his 5 stringed bass, Piere Molien (sp?) on xylophones (the most beautiful I have heard) and another gentleman I am not familiar with who played xylophones also and some great grooving percussions and a con shell. On drums, I was literally blown away with the shear power of non other than Gary Husband!! My God! Just a few days ago I said to a friend, wouldn't it be incredible if Gary was on drums? Well, it took only a few moments to realize it was, in fact him! I said to myself, well that explains it all lol.. He was just animal! The minute the sticks were in his hands. Was just fantastic. I enjoyed it emensly. Handsford said the last time he played The Bottom Line was 1980! He said something along the lines of Alan inviting them. (Could this have been the great Alan Holdsworth??) I'd like to think so (: Alan is just pure guitar genius. (I wish Alan would come back around town.. it's been quite some years since I've seen him..) The only thing that bothered me was that the place was pretty bare and empty! My guess, 50 to 100 people..? I thought for sure at least the early show would be filled, if not packed! I know we all have to work and all but this was a rare treat indeed! Heck, I made it in from Eastern Long Island during rush hour driving over 2 hours. Maybe the good word got out too late.. which is too bad. I hope the later show was more of a full house for them. Was great to see Happy. She is just so beautiful to see live. Was cool to see her name up on the billboard :)) She sounded as she always sounds live.... pure chills! Everytime I see and hear her, I am blown away even more. I think someone managed to tape, although I could be wrong (; Well I am off to a chapter and some sleep. Was nice to meet you John (he does the sound for Ectofests) and I hope Meredith and Woj got home safe! Take care, over and out... My tale is only one day removed, so this was last night. meredith said: > woj and I met up with JeffW, who was finishing up dinner with Vienna when > we arrived. I brought my parents and met Jeff Burka and his partner. Iota has a separate dining room. It was full so we couldn't eat there, but Vienna was there with a friend and I stopped by to say hi. We then ate in the bar. > I'd kind of expected attendance to be light, since it was > Vienna's first foray into the area on a weekday during the summer when > college is out of session, and unfortunately my expectations were fulfilled > and then some. Attendance at Iota was excellent! We were pleased to see three rows of chairs out, a total rarity at Iota. This made my folks ecstatic. For some reason, they don't like to stand through a whole show. The place was probably at least 80% full, which, given the kind of place this is, seems completely full to normal people. I gather it was Vienna's second visit. Our opener was Clair Holley. She was a somewhat wispy-voiced singer from Mississipi, accompanied by a very good electric guitar player. She had a voice sort of like a more southern Karen Perris (Innocence Mission). It really reminded me of someone else, but I couldn't ever place it. She writes those songs that tend to meander through a story. Not many repeated choruses, not that catchy, but compelling and intriguing. I picked up her latest CD "Dandelion", and my dad bought a CD of gospel/traditional songs called "Lullabye". She's someone I'd definitely consider catching in the future. She was a little undertstated, but still engaging. I chatted with her before the show and she was very friendly. > After a short break, Vienna sat down at the piano and began to win a couple > dozen new fans. She played several new songs (she'll be recording her new > album in Nashville starting in a few weeks), as well as several from > _Waking Hour_ ("Gravity", "Enough To Go By", "Lullabye For A Stormy Night", > "Unwritten Letter #1", "Momentum" and my request, "The Tower", This all seems pretty similar to what we got. We also had a large crew from a law firm where Vienna had been brought in to play a private party. She talked about the experience and put on a baseball cap they gave her and probably a dozen people in the audience got rowdy. I was wondering who all those people were who didn't quite look like they belonged at Iota. No Tori covers, but our notable encore was a traditional Taiwanese lullabye that she sang in something vaguely resembling Mandarin Chinese. It was beautiful, and a great way to end a show. That was my first Vienna live experience, and it was excellent. My parents were floored too, and liked both performers. neal ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Jul 2003 19:08:52 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Happy Rhodes, Bottom Line, 7/2 Hi, Wow, most of the work has already been done for me ... :) Last night was indeed wonderful. I was very pleasantly surprised to see Bon and Hansford accompany Happy onstage. The thought that this might occur had crossed my mind, but I didn't know what to expect. It was particularly great to hear them flesh out the new songs a bit more. Bob had a bass drum added to his kit this time, and that added some more oomph, as well. >- Movie Quote Quiz - >Meredith didn't get one Happy thought was easy: "I'm sorry; I thought you >were a nerd. No, that's me." That was in the second set ... the first set was a line from "Terminator" (delivered by Bob doing his best Ahnold impersonation), and I did get that one. :) But I honestly didn't catch what Happy said the second time -- how the hell was I supposed to know it was Dwarvish?! (As I told her later, I'd have expected her to speak Elvish, if anything. She agreed with that. :) >4. Collective Heart ... and what a kickass rendition it was!! >This song started with Bob over next to Happy drumming both on the doumbek >and on Happy's guitar while she held down chords. Too cool. I only counted 30 or so, but woj assured me I missed a bunch. Yet another show by a House O'Muzak alumna, where the audience was smaller than when they played at our house. I do agree that the $20 ticket price kept the crowd size way down. For something like that, you definitely will make it up in volume. The club got totally hosed from a revenue perspective last night, which I don't think was really necessary. I hope it doesn't keep them from giving Happy more opportunities to play there in future -- I would hope Allan noticed that a significant portion of the audience was there to see Happy, particularly at the late show. >I hope the later show was more of a full house for them. Sadly, as is usually the case at The Bottom line, the audience was about half the size as for the early show. :( woj confirmed: >i was talking to one of the people there who came to see gongzilla (who >was rather favorably impressed by happy too, i might add) and he told >me that pierre was not there -- only benoit. turns out this fellow is >somewhat of an expert -- he runs a gongzilla fansite -- so i took him >at his word. Admittedly I haven't heard Gong, but there was absolutely nothing wrong with Gongzilla! (I know Chris and Paul don't agree with that sentiment, but hey. :) They were amazing, in a bombastic-instrumental-prog-fusion sort of way.
