This is incredibly sad news about her. She was signed to Warner Brothers record and was a young pianist from Pennsylvania... "I regret to tell everyone that Shelby Starner passed away at 11:58 pm on Sunday June 22nd 2003 at Pocono Medical Center. She passed away from an eating disorder according to her mother. She was from our small community and will be sorely missed. Her family is giving a memorial service at East Stroudsburg University on June 27th 2003 and she will be buried at Custard's Cemetary in Bartonsville, PA at the convenience of the family. She was 19 years old. She was preparing to attend the University of Pittsburgh in August to study Latin American studies. She is survived by her father Ray and stepmother Susan, her mother Katherine and stepfather Allen, one sister Emily, one stepbrother Willie, her maternal grandparents and her paternal grandfather. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made to Doctors without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.org) or Shelby Starner Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in English at ESU, c/o John Procopio, Pocono Community Bank, 559 Main St., Stroudsburg PA 18360." (long!) Most people probably picture New Order as a bunch of moody shoe-gazers, and indeed some of their songs fit that description... but I also turn to them for cheering up as well. One of my favorite tunes from them is "Face Up" which has the singularly most boppy beat to it, despite having strange lyrics like "Oh how I cannot bear the thought of you"... Go figure. Other happy treats from New Order are: "Your Silent Face" "Temptation" - love this one! "Perfect Kiss"/"Kiss Of Death" (from "Substance") Then for various non-New Order happiness: ABBA - nearly anything KaTe - "The Big Sky" Art Of Noise - nearly all their stuff Iggy Pop - "Lust For Life" (the Trainspotting theme) Various 80s cheeze and bop: (I'm slowly trying to collect just about everything ever released in the 80s ;)... Lindsey Buckingham - Holiday Road (used in Vacation soundtrack) Psychedlic Furs - "Ghost In You" and "Love My Way" Yaz - "Situation" (or any of its billion remixes) M - "Pop muzik" Monte Video - "Shoop Shoop Diddy Wop" - (relatively obscure. saw the video around '82) OMD - "Forever Live and Die" The Icicle Works - "Birds Fly (Whisper To a Scream)" Todd Rundgren - "Bang On the Drum All Day" (not a personal favorite, but it's hard for people not to grin when they hear this) Freur - "Doot Doot" (another obscure one) Squeeze - "Cool For Cats" Bjork - "Big Time Sensuality" Chris Isaak - "Flying" Lucas - "Lucas With The Lid Off" TMBG - "Particle Man" (makes you smirk anyway ;) Maxi Priest w/ Shaggy - "That Girl" I have lots of club tunes that I have happy memories for and thus bliss me out, but I'm not sure they'd have the same effect on others.. But ones to track down and check to be sure are: 808 State - "Europa" Flag - "Wonderful Day" (took me forever to find this one) Orb - "Little Fluffy Clouds" (I can recommend other Orb tunes too) Way Out West - "the Gift" (neat combo with Lamb's "Gorecki") Hardfloor - "Funalogue" Opus 3 - "Evolution Rush" and "It's a Fine Day" Aly-Us - "Follow Me" Rob'N'Raz w/ Leila K - "Got to Get" And has anyone here heard Ursula 1000? Neato jazzy lounge electronica... Okay, the bandwidth cops have surrounded my house and asked me step away from the keyboard.. so I'll stop here.. ;) moo. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 00:41:11 -0700 From: cyo@landoftheblind.com Subject: Re:lots of questions for oregonian ectos and hello to coming to sf hi all just back from tour to oregon for the weekend, great house concert in Salem Oregon, you missed it Michael! Blind will tour up again for Oregon Country Fair in 3 weeks & we are still trying to book something around Eugene for that weekend. I need some EctoEugene advice....what do all the Eugene clubs do during that weekend? Do they close down? If we played at one would it be futile? If you live in Eugene and you went to the fair all day, do you think you would still go out and hear more music at night? Janna in Eugene had us for a house concert and it was lovely but I don't think she is doing it anymore, anyone else know anyone in the area doing house concerts? (yes, I checked at houseconcerts.com and Janna is the only one listed) Some folks in Portland didn't make it to Salem, do you think you would if we held it in Salem again? (I'd rather stay in the area and not add 4 more hours to the long ass trip, but in Sept we are going all the way up to Seattle so we can do some Portland gigs then) Thanks you all for any info, touring is such fun scheduling, my brain my brain! Also, to the person asking about Ecto gigs in SF in Oct. Please email me off list and I will try to help you. Yes, Wendy dear is coming out and touring with me again, she usually comes every Aug and moved it to Oct due to finishing her new album. We may do SF together and or up to Oregon, but not sure of any dates yet. But I live in SF and know all the cool houses that do concerts, good clubs, as well as which local singers are excellent around here. Phil Hudson and Bill Mazur are also in the area and founts of ectoinfo. So just email me as your trip gets closer and I'd be glad to hook up and help ya. I'd even offer sleeping space, but if Wendy is here too at the same time, well, my house is tiny, but I am open to helping. much love to all cyoakha "If you put Liz, Sheryl, Britany and Jewel into a blender and push high, what do you get?" Thanks to Kira for mentioning "Roam", as well, another that makes you want to get up and throw your arms about. I'd also put down pretty much all of the Neilds' "If You Lived Here" and "Call My Name Out" by Matthew Jay. As for "Shiny Happy People"....well, oddly, I never thought of this as a happy song. I always thought it was deeply sarcastic, ironic, tongue in cheek, and saw it as a comment on my high school and college years. I thought I knew exactly what it was about. I was amazed when I heard peter Buck say they wouldn't do it live any more because "the Beatles stopped doing 'Yellow Submarine'". Obviously, I read faaaar more into it than I should have. Oh, and I thought of another couple of sad songs, both by Jackson Browne (sadmeister): "Late for the Sky" and "The Pretender". adam k. - ------------------------------------------------ This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2003 10:01:12 +0200 From: "Marcel Rijs" Subject: Ulrich Schnauss Hi all, I'm not usually into this electronic music stuff, it's way too techno for me, but some time ago a coworker confronted me with a cd called "Faraway train passing by" by Ulrich Schnauss. It's lovely stuff, it's actually got melodies and it never fails to get me in a good mood. It's what the kids call "chilling" these days. The guy has recently released his second album, "A strangely isolated place", and it's another one I can wholeheartedly recommend. Actually, now that I think about it, this stuff isn't very far removed from the ambient tracks Happy recorded for the Aural Gratification samplers. To the best of my knowledge, it's the best description I can give. There should also be a loose track by Ulrich on a 2CD compilation somewhere, but I would opt for an MP3 of that one if possible. Haven't found it yet. Anyways, check it out. Kind regards, Marcel Rijs - marcel.rijs@kb.nl afd.
