She's been off the road for a little while due to recently having a baby, but she's back now with a new tour and I think there's a new album or two on the way as well (whoohoo). Andrea's kind of jazz/folk/torch, and she can sing so sweet it makes the bottom drop out of your stomach and your heart break at the same time. Definitely a live show not to miss, IMO. Theft is not the same thing as copyright infringement. - - When you steal a stereo, you're depriving the owner of his or her stereo. - - When you copy a song without paying for it, the purchaser still has his/her song. The rightsholder has been *potentially* deprived of income. What's worse is the fact the the punishment for stealing a CD -- petty larceny -- might be a small fine or community service, but the penalty for copyright infringement is $150,000 per work. So stealing a 10-song CD infringes (at least) 20 copyrights -- leaving you liable for $3 million. Why 20? Because for each song, there's the songwriter's copyright on the lyrics and composition (circle-C) and the record company's copyright on the sound recording itself (circle-P). I also ended up helping a couple of Portland-area Ectophiles get tickets to the Eugene show so they could complete a hat-trick of seeing her in Seattle, Portland, and Eugene. Her show here at the WOW Hall was definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen. Many Ectophiles talked about Tori playing to rather underappreciative bar crowds, but the audience that night at the WOW Hall was raptly attentive during her songs and loudly applauding between them, so I like to think that Tori probably enjoyed playing here more than many of the other places she played during that first tour. As it turns out Tori is on tour and will stop in Eugene again this summer. Even better, as far as I'm concerned, is that Ben Folds will be her opening act, so I'm really looking forward to it. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 2003 22:24:51 -0400 From: Jason Gordon Subject: RE: cd collecting on a related note, what are people's opinions of used cd stores/ebay/half.com/gemm - there are many avenues by which to purchase music - some of which the artist may see $$$ and others not a chance in heck... must I buy every cd full price? or am I a bad bad man if I discover someone new on ebay and then order their other two albums directly from them? just my 2 pence Jason np kristin hoffman - divided heart ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jun 2003 19:28:37 -0700 From: Steve VanDevender Subject: Tympanic tours the Pacific Northwest and California Tympanic is a band that's made a big splash in the small but lively pond of Eugene's music scene over the past couple of years. I've found their music to be remarkably intelligent and well-performed, and have really enjoyed watching them develop. The band members cite an eclectic and occasionally ectophilic number of influences: Sigur Ros, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Bjork, Stevie Wonder, the Talking Heads, and more. They have a web page at http://tympanicband.com/, including some samples of their songs in live performances in Ogg and MP3 format. Here's a list of scheduled shows from a newsletter sent out today; if you like good music and live near one of these places, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you go to one of their shows. ***Upcoming Shows*** 6.19.03 seattle, wa the rainbow 6.20.03 spokane, wa b-side 6.21.03 sandpoint, id eichardt's 6.23.03 missoula, mt tophat 6.24.03 moscow, id john's alley 6.26.03 blaine, wa dakota creek roadhouse 6.27.03 vancouver, bc backstage lounge 6.28.03 portland, or fez ballroom http://www.jigsawjones.com/fez06282003.htm 7.4.03 portland, or the crystal ballroom 7.16.03 san francisco, ca red devil lounge 7.17.03 davis, ca g. street pub 7.18.03 south lake tahoe, ca divided sky 7.23.03 fairfax, ca peri's 7.27.03 south lake tahoe, ca strange brew *** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jun 2003 12:16:51 +0930 From: jonathan soong Subject: mp3z available As i have supported mp3z quite a lot in the recent CD-collecting thread I thought i would upload a couple of songs from my band :) Availble here: http://brunatex.com/mp3z/ Has been compared to danielle dax, cocteau twins, kate etc. Hope someone likes it, its on a fast link... Well, technically buying a used CD only gives money to the person (or store) that is selling the CD. The artist sees nothing from this double-dip. (Same goes for used books.) And yet I haven't heard the RIAA make a peep about used CD stores ... yet. Interesting thought, no? Here's another thought: If you download music, Sen. Orrin Hatch wants to destroy your computer.
