Dealing with mondegreens is part of my job -- slightly easier than the folks who come in to the store who want to know about this song, you know, it's been on the radio for a few years, it's got stuff about love in it, and it goes (arrhythmically on a single pitch) "dah. dah dah dah. dah dah." We also get a lot of tourists who don't speak English well, so there's a lot of guessing to be done on artists. I figured out that someone today who was looking for what sounded like "Gridzig Fiffigy" wanted "classical Vivaldi". I was stumped by the one who murmured that he wanted "Wiwi' Wiwiwi'." Vanna, can I buy a consonant? But in true mondegreen fashion, and in a probable sign of Buffy overload today, I heard for the the first time a Frou Frou album, and on one song early on I could have sworn that she was singing repeatedly "die in the Hellmouth". Some years ago (1989?) I was singing with a trio in Brooklyn and the lyrics to one of my songs blew off of the stand where I was looking at it, so I had to wing the words. Fortunately (?), our keyboard player has a near-perfect memory for just about everything, and later recited back to me what I had sung. The only line that stuck with me was "exploding rocks explore the evening news". And it gets really funny when you hear people trying to sing along with Sigur Ros. In English. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 03:00:03 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ************ Mike Matthews (matthewm@matthews.leesburg.va.us) ************* *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Mike Matthews Mon June 16 1969 Pr. Reportedly, John Lennon rendered the last line, "God save the cream." :-) And then there was the classic case of the line from the theme from _All in the Family_, "Gee, our old La Salle ran great," which was very unclear on the show's soundtrack. I don't know what people commonly plugged into it, cognitively, but it can't have been pretty. :-) On the upside, according to legend, Louis Armstrong reportedly invented scat singing out of necessity--Having dropped the sheet music to a song called "Heebie Jeebies" during a recording session, Satchmo had to come up with something to verbalize, and he did. Mitch ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 10:02:10 +0100 From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: hop, skip and jump (erratic fx) My first record player was bought in a yard sale and was an old school model: grey, with the speaker in the lid and an arm that was forged from some unearthly metal and which weighed a ton. I loved it. It gave me freedom and independence, and meant I didn't have to wait until my parents were out of the house before i could use their Zenith hi-fi/cabinet thingie. Among the records I bought was ELO's "No Answer" (their first album, apparently untitled in England) which contains an instrumental called, appropriately, "Jumpin' Biz" (imagine "Natural Gas" with string and oboes). After I'd had the album a couple of years, I inherited my sister's Lloydtron stereo (hey! stereo!) and played the album on that, only to discover a whole, completely unexpected section (about 5-10 seconds worth) of the track. My old stereo had been skipping it, but so cunningly that I never even noticed. As the "missing" section involved a key and tempo change, it's reappearance made it a whole new piece. Also, speaking of shuffling tunes around and getting unexpected combinations: I see the point, but I'm one of those anal gits who struggle for ages when putting together a mix so that a song can be followed almost logically by another. You can't have too many slow tunes in a row, nor too many fast ones ina row. It's like the old days of artists arranging their material on vinyl: getting a dynamic that constantly pull the listener forward. I'm trying to arrange a minidisc mix right now, and know that Voices on the Verge's "I'll Be All Right" comes best AFTER the Move's thunderous "When Your Momma's Gone", and CSNY's "Everybody I Love You", although great as a mix closer, doesn't really work coming after voices on the verge. COMPLETELY OFF-TOPIC: and for all the americans out there: what's the origin of that "Shame on you" gesture, the pointing finger being stroked the index finger of the other hand? It's completely unknown over here, and I've had that damned "Curlers in your hair/Shame on you" jingle from 30 years ago stuck in my head (am I the only one who remembers that?) adam k. np: lisa germano/lullaby for liquid pig - ------------------------------------------------ This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2003 04:16:29 -0700 From: "The Ectophiles' Guide" Subject: Recent changes to the Ectophiles' Guide Latest changes to the Ectophiles' Guide 15 June 2003 New Guide entries added for: * Nina Nastasia * Nathan * Neutral Milk Hotel (by request) * Stina Nordenstam (by request) * November Project (by request) * Kate Schutt * Shakira * Jeneen Terrana * Royal Wood Changes made to the entries for: * Afro Celts (name change from Afro Celt Sound System) * Natacha Atlas (additional comments) * Joan Baez (additional comments) * Heidi Berry (additional comments) * Enya (additional comments) * Mary Fahl (new album) * Patty Griffin (additional comments) * Amy X Neuburg (additional comments) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are receiving this email because you have asked to be notified of updates to the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music at http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/. According to BODYTALK: A WORLD GUIDE TO GESTURES (1994) by Desmond Morris, the SHAME ON YOU gesture used with or by children, only appears in North America. The origin of the gesture is unknown, but the rubbing of two fingers is thought to symbolize friction. There is a related gesture, with a different meaning, however, used in Wales, Germany, and Austria, in which one finger 'saws' across the other pointed one, and which is considered an insult. The idea of friction is also considered to be playing a role here, but its origin is also unknown." The Serrano | Tin Angel Web Site | Performer Schedule Anyone who could make it to the NYC show should definitely make the effort because she's performing with her old band-mates from Project Lo. It's a double-bill with Gongzilla (which also features Bon Lozaga and Hansford Rowe). Anyway, I just wanted to put that out there. Artists aren't making the same kind of money doing club gigs anymore, so I'd like to try to help fill those seats as much as possible. Now back to the other point of this message. Happy is playing another house concert on July 19th in West Hurley, NY, (this is about 15 minutes East of Woodstock). Our host will be Sharon Nichols. As usual, the show will start at 6pm and donations are recommended at $10 but if you can donate more, GO FOR IT. (and HGP 1991) I have to be scarce for a couple of months. The Board of Education for the City of Chicago is tearing down our block to build a school. They've been threatening to do this for the last 5 years, but neighborhood organizations have managed to block it. Last year we were told that we would have probably 5 more years, since the city no longer had the money to buy up the properties and the school project was moved to a lower priority. Lies, all lies. Yesterday we got our Termination of Lease and have to be out of here by the 14th of July. (What rankles is that 1) the city STILL doesn't have the money for all the properties and the school is STILL a lower priority, which means that half a block of buildings, immediately across from an existing elementary school, will be vacant and shuttered. A drug-dealer and sexual predator's dream scenario, and 2) our landlord KNEW about this date since last December, yet chose to not tell us even though we see him often (he lives on the first floor!) and are on very good terms with him. Were. He finally got around to telling us yesterday.) So, well, I was working on the FAQ and live concerts but it'll all have to wait. The next album isn't due for quite a few months anyway. Everything else will have to wait, because anyone who's been here will know that we have a whole shitload of packing to do (once we find a place!). That's what you get for amassing tens of thousands of CDs, LPs, DVDs, cassettes, books, magazines and all kinds of other things. Live zen, that's the ticket (not that I could ever do it). I do now have the HGP 1991 up at Yngve's. Don't everybody download at once :) Think about when it would be the middle of the night in Norway (I know they're what, 6 or 7 hours ahead of Chicago time), and that would probably be the best time to try. http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_01.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_02.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_03.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_04.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_05.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_06.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_07.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_08.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_09.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_10.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_11.mp3 http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/happy/HGP/HappyGiftProject_1991_12.mp3 (As I cut and pasted those URLs, they were immediately underlined, so I should note that there are underscores present. It's at http://158.38.89.220/equipoise/current/SuspendedInEcto.shn (57,920 kb) Here's a list of how long and how big the files are, and what's in them. I didn't get it all finished (some last names are missing), but I think I corrected all the spelling mistakes. Please point out any I missed, and I'll correct them for the web page I will build, when we get settled. They're a bit uneven timewise because I didn't want to separate woj from meth, or Klaus from Claudia, or Jorn's picks. I didn't want to separate them song by song because that kind of misses the point of the whole thing. If you get everything, and listen to them in order (the filenames and ID3 tags should sort that out for you), it'll be just about like hearing the whole thing on tape. I resisted the urge to cut out my talking, and re-record songs with actual CDs so they'd sound better. I did cut out some of the longer pauses and a few of my louder breath intakes :). Otherwise, it's all there.
