I haven't been able to find one for any less than about $100. After reading the book about the lives of Jeff Buckley and Tim Buckley, I got really curious about this album, partly because Jeff says it's Tim's "masterpiece", and also just from the descriptions in the book. I managed to contact one of Tim's collaborators, Lee Underwood, but he really wasn't any help. Anybody????? Lizzie was the second, Vienna the third of three acts that night, and Lizzie's showcase was a big to-do put on by her record label (Warner?). If I recall, Lizzie used to have a group called Lizzie Borden, and then somewhere along the way she decided to just go with Lizzie West. I wasn't impressed by her performance or her music. I remember thinking that she sounded like a less intelligible Natalie Merchant if she was in the Bodeans. Now, I'm not a big Natalie fan, so perhaps that colored my take on Lizzie, but to me, her voice wasn't as strong or memorable as Natalie's. So, you know, a thumbs down vote from me. But who knows, her album might sound ok. Has anyone heard the group Postal Service? I heard a song of theirs on the syndicated version of the World Cafe and also on KCRW and found them to be quite fun. Semi-retro synth indie pop with male and female vox. Mr. B said, <> Cassette should be fine. I don't think a built in mic on a cheap cassette recorder will work that well. If you go out and purchase a cassette recorder (check Goodwill, Salvation Army, Thrift Stores), make sure it has a mic in port. That is so you can plug a microphone into it, which will probably provide better sound than the built-in mic. I've never tried this, but it might work. Other more experienced sound engineer-type ectos can chime in on this. I wonder if placing a piece of glass or mirror on the floor, sticking a cheap contact mic (suction cup-type, cheap at RadioShack) on the glass/mirror and running that to a cassette recorder would do the trick. I would expect the glass to amplify any sound from below. But what do I know, I never studied physics. In bad old movies you always see someone putting a drinking glass to the wall to make out what is going on next door. Same principle. We used to have it and loved it. We had it when we were on Napster, and it was great! But that company (telocity) went out of business (rather, was DRIVEN out of business by SBC Ameritech, the company that owned the telephone lines), then another DSL company we moved to (Sprint ION) was driven out of business, and rather than go with SBC, we moved to cable modem. Since Napster folded, speed didn't matter so much, but now that I'm doing lots of uploads and some downloads, it matters! So we're getting DSL through Yahoo SBC. How much hotter are the fires going to be for us when we go to hell? Anyone know? That's all the bad news. The good news is that maybe, just maybe, I can get my Shoutcast running again (Comcast wouldn't allow it). That will be one of the first things we check when we get hooked up later this month. SBC is the only DSL we've ever known, since they ate our local telco (SNET) and introduced it to our area. We had some problems in the very beginning, which turned out to be startup issues (we were one of the very first customers on our side of town). Since then, we haven't had a problem at all. The best part was, for almost two years we got our DSL service for $3.95 a month, due to a billing error on their end. They never caught it, and I wasn't about to tell them! (apologies for the duplicate information being sent to ecto again -- forgot to mention the details about the new recording...) first, there is a new yahoogroup which is starting to get up and go at . beth is reputed to be a member -- or at least is committed to participating in some way. wfmu deejay and all-around music font of knowledge irwin chusid is definitely a member, which is a good sign since he's such a significant proponent of beth's music and, as her producer, well-plugged in to her happenings. second, it seems that she has been in the studio recording. woo! irwin's post at has the details: >From: Irwin Chusid >Date: Fri Jun 6, 2003 9:54 pm >Subject: Re: [bethsorrentino] New Recordings > >Some details, from the producer: > >Nine tracks (voice & piano) were recorded in CT last November at Tarquin >Studios -- eight new originals and one cover (Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue >Raincoat"). It's funny you should say that, because my tape of LE came from Klaus Kluge (Hallo, Klaus!), and he went ahead and put "Little Earthquakes" on the start of side B because he also tacked on the b-sides from the European "China" single. Even now, whenever the final strains of "Little Earthquakes" fade out on the cd, I still sit there expecting "Sugar" to start up straight away. :} >very interesting how listening to something over and over gets ingrained >in practically physical memory. It gets spooky. Another example: my first KaTe album was _The Whole Story_, which I bought back in 1987. To this day, whenever I hear "Running Up That Hill", I fully expect the next sound I hear after the song is over to be the that starts "Army Dreamers", so when "It's in the trees! It's coming!" emanates from the speakers I never fail to be startled. This, even though by now I've probably listened to _Hounds of Love_ 20 times more often than _TWS_. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 19:33:14 -0700 From: Nadyne Mielke Subject: Re: First mention of Tori On Friday, Jun 13, 2003, at 19:04 US/Pacific, broadway jack wrote: > somewhere around here, i still have the tape of little earthquakes > court sent me way back when. the funny thing about it is that she > switched two songs around to make it fit better on a c90 cassette. the > end result being that i am always surprised when, listening to the > real album, "tear in your hand" comes on instead of "little > earthquakes". very interesting how listening to something over and > over gets ingrained in practically physical memory. I do the same sort of thing. There are several albums that I listened to so many times that, if I hear just one of the songs on the album (say, on the radio), I'm surprised when the next song doesn't get played next. I've had this happen to a lesser extent with some mix tapes, too. I have a complete mental copy of 'Flood' by They Might Be Giants rattling around in my head. It's a loop, too, 'cause the tape was looping in my car for an all-night drive. So if I hear any one of those songs, I get the whole damned album stuck in my head. 'Minimum wage (yah!)' I can only guess that the space in my head that would otherwise be used for storing stuff like my phone number is instead taken up by 'Flood'. I'm quite sure that if I ever get Alzheimer's, I'm going to sing that entire album over and over and over until someone strangles me. /nm {yes, I usually do have to look up my phone number when someone asks for it} ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 20:15:11 -0700 From: Damon Subject: Re: First mention of Tori - and multi-cd player question On 13 Jun, broadway jack (that'd be woj) wrote: > very interesting how > listening to something over and over gets ingrained in practically > physical memory. that's precisely why i *used* to listen to cds on random/shuffle play, because i had noted and rebelled against that effect with tapes. but then - quite a few years ago now - i got sick of random play and started listening to cds from start to finish again, and i rarely if ever use random play anymore. i'm not sure why i rebelled against always listening to things in the same order in the first place, and i'm equally unsure why i changed, but i find it interesting. it just felt right, somhow (both times). i'm planning to finally get a multi-cd player soon (i have store credit at a&b and most cds i want these days they don't carry) so i suspect i'll start using random play again a little more. we'll see. speaking of which, does anyone have any particulary experiences (positive or negative) with particular brands/models of multi-cd players that they could share? i've been keeping an eye open for a while but there's an overwhelming array. i'm not certain if i want a turntable one or one of these new mega-cartridge dealies, but i'm leaning towards the former as putting 100 cds in seems like vast overkill and i suspect those ones are louder anyway. any thoughts? - -damon - -- dl+ecto@usrbin.ca: protecting my real address since 2002 (too late!) > EWS starts here! < ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #167 **************************
