Tell me where to send the check :) I have the first HGP ripped to wav files, and I'm trying to figure how best to present them. The original was on 2 tapes. The 2nd side of the 2nd tape is pretty much filler, but it does include selections from Ectophiles, and some things I stuck in. I've divided it up into 4 sections, cutting at the same point as on the tapes, but those files are still really huge, as wavs, as .shn files or even mp3 files. I could chop them up even further, into 6 or 8 parts, or I could even chop them up song by song, numbered so you'll know which order they came in. I haven't decided. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. It was a pleasure to listen to again, because there were some really good songs on it. There were some iffys too, but it would be impolite to point them out. :) I'm not happy now with the song I picked ("Lost in Music" by Anita Lane). I still love it, but I wish I'd picked something else. I still have not found a playlist. How do you figure the archives are searchable Mitch? I couldn't find a way to search them. I got a lot of the songs, but I'm very unsure about the spelling on some songs/album titles/artist names, and spelling of some Ectophile's names. I wouldn't want to release these in any way until I had all the spellings correct. I want to have CD audio files, since I haven't made much of a transition to computer listening. I'd be happy to do some level of distribution if people are interested in copies of these. I can dump cassettes onto my computer and do a quick editing into tracks without any problems. I'll need a fresh copy of the tape I broke though (1991 HGP 1). I could probably even take Vickie's wav files and convert them into something I could edit and burn. It looks like an absolutely incredible album, stuffing Van der Graaf Generator (twice!), Anthony Philips, Kevin Ayers, Rare Bird, Man, Steve's Hillage and Hackett, and even throwing in various bands to remind people that they were, once, considered prog -- Electric Light Orchestra, Roxy Music and Atomic Rooster. It's the original mix done in 1999 before Wendy went on an overseas tour and came back with a new direction in mind for the album. Much of what's on this original mix was dropped, and as a result it's quite different! Greetings Ectoids~ In the beautiful voices thread, I dont recall seeing Joy Askews name Primarily a bad-ass New York session musician (keys/vocals) with a couple of CDs, I first became aware of her, seeing her live backing up many favorite musicians: Laurie Anderson, Joe Jackson, Peter Gabriel. She often stole the show from Jackson consistently getting applause rivaling his. Also a huge reponse from Gabriel crowds before leaving the Secret World tour and being replaced by Paula Cole. My favorite session work of hers is on Jacksons Blaze of Glory and Laughter & Lust CDs. In addition to terrific background vocals throughout, she takes a solo credited as "Madame Butterfly vocals" on the BOG track "Sentimental Thing", showing a vocal range few pop singers would even attempt. Similar technique on L&Ls "Trying to Cry". And how about Dawn Upshaw? Though technically an opera soprano, Jackson used her staggering voice on his Heaven & Hell disc, a series of neo-classical trenchant interpretations of the Seven Deadly Sins, on the song, "Angel" which takes on the sin Lust. From joejackson.com: "The point of view is of a young guy who's horny and confused," says Joe. "It's like he has a little cartoon angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, both tempting him." The archetypal voices of the Virgin and the Whore are enacted by Suzanne Vega, with sly and sometimes bizarre innuendo ("Hey Rufus, how's the rain on the rhubarb?") - and Dawn Upshaw, whose part is based on a lovely 14th century latin hymn to the Virgin Mary. Jane Siberry and Joy Askew also sing on this release. Another fabulous vocalist as well as guitarist/violinist/harmonica player (the first and last time I ever saw THAT as a sexy instrument) is Mindy Jostyn, whos toured with Jackson and Steely Dan, Carly Simon many more. I still havent purchased her CD Blue Stories but its on my long list mindyjostyn.com Also, you Tori freaks may recall she covered, Joe's "Real Men", though when I saw him last month, he gave her the backhanded compliment that it was a fine rendition despite the fact she changed a lyric, thereby changing the meaning of the song. ~Alberto np: Metallicas St. Anger.. Input the bass notes into Band in the Box, save the line as a midi file, and let's add it to the ecto collaboration site (when it is up and running). If you have the means of recording it as a wav with a real bass, that would be fine too. I have an update on RadioShack mics. I went down to the local Shack to buy a Zip Zap for a recent high school graduate (wouldn't you like a nice toy for graduation?) and while there got info on mics. Shure is currently supplying two mics to the Shack. RS-230 (33-3058) for $60 and RS-130 (33-3048) for $40. Without testing the RS-230, I would guess it is comparable to the 33-1070D I mentioned yesterday. You generally get what you pay for. The $20 difference between the 130 and the 230 can probably be heard. I have four or five el cheapo mics from RadioShack. They sound el cheapo. But the two RadioShack/Shure mics I have sound very good. Good, strong dynamic mics. About beautiful voices: I did think of Connie Dover, just wanted to limit my list. Also thought of Jimmy Spheeris. Was surprised to see the closet 2nd Chapter of Acts listeners. Matthew Ward is an amazing vocalist with power enough to knock you over. Bobby McFerrin is jaw-droppingly good, especially in concert. I really enjoy Buddy Holly's voice, though he is very nasal. Conway Twitty could go up into the stratosphere just about as easily as Roy Orbison. It may not have mattered much if you were there, but on video, you spend the whole time playing the game of "Where's Happy?" because you can hear her voice, but not see her. It's very frustrating. As audio records, they're good (well, as good as "audience recordings" ever are, anyway). That will be made available. I'll take some time and extract out "Serenading Genius" from the Painted Bride and tell you when it's up. Cool forgotten trivia about that particular show: Before the lights went down, as people were being seated, Happy had the house play Bjork and Kate ("And Dream of Sheep")! What balls! Most singers wouldn't want someone better than them (I think even Happy would say that) played before their show. That's confidence!! And as I recall, my eye was mostly drawn to the error message on the monitors. I thought I recalled you videotaping (was it also you who handed out the glowsticks?) but wasn't sure. > As audio records, they're good (well, as good as "audience recordings" > ever are, anyway). > > That will be made available. All this talk about beautiful voices has made me think - In my opinion that voice also appears in other ways than the singing voice. The other day I got hold on Ginette Neveu's recording of Beethoven violine concerto. To her the voice was the violine, and she only need one tone to move me to tears. To Jessica Williams the piano is the voice. People have to use what they can to create beauty. Some people got a gift for moving people with several different means, and those people should be looked upon with respect and in rare cases with awe - to me Happy, Tori and KaTe with others are among those. They are making the exploration into music worth the whole effort. She will be performing at the Bottom Line in NYC on July 2nd and at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia on November 1st. Below are the URL's for both of those clubs. If the links don't work, please contact me: kosterhaudt@aol.com WELCOME TO THE BOTTOM LINE NIGHTCLUB! The Serrano | Tin Angel Web Site | Performer Schedule Anyone who could make it to the NYC show should definitely make the effort because she's performing with her old band-mates from Project Lo. It's a double-bill with Gongzilla (which also features Bon Lozaga and Hansford Rowe). Anyway, I just wanted to put that out there. Artists aren't making the same kind of money doing club gigs anymore, so I'd like to try to help fill those seats as much as possible.
