This reminds me of the not-too distant thread about voices that weren't exactly good, but were still great (or, as someone put it much better: Not great voices, but great singers). I see a few of those names (Bob Dylan, Neil Young) here, as well, including many singers who I personally like, but would never consider them "beautiful voices". Still, coming in late (as always) I have only one name to add: Peter Hammill. Surprised no-one mentioned him sooner. At his best, he can whip most male artists into a small puddle of poo. adam k. - ------------------------------------------------ This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jun 2003 11:13:06 +0200 From: marion.kippers@zonnet.nl Subject: Re: Vienna Teng News: CNN & new tour Hi, > >CNN's profile on Vienna is slated to appear tomorrow night, Friday June > >6, on NewsNight with Aaron Brown at 10:00 PM EST! Phillips" Subject: Mary Fahl concert in Cincinnati! Wow! :-) Okay, before I get to it, I should mention that Sarah Baravetto, the opening act, was good...but the sound mix, IMO, was terrible. Waaay too much drum and bass, with her voice often being totally drowned out by the band. The distortion in the sound in general was very annoying, so that one couldn't really appreciate (in the true sense of the word) her voice for what it was/is. She did two or three acoustic-y songs, which were nice. My SO bought a copy of her CD, so maybe then we will be able to hear the lyrics. :-P Okay, on to the main event. :-) Mary Fahl was as magnificent as ever! She seemed less inaccessible dark goddess high above and more approachable but VERY gifted down-to-earth woman. :-) Her explanations of various songs and other patter on-stage accomplished this. I don't remember her *ever* talking on-stage at October Project concerts. She did most of the songs off her new CD, "The Other Side Of Time"; two October Project songs ("Bury My Lovely" and "Deep As You Go", the second she said she appreciates even more, now that she has taken up deep-water diving); and one song that I asked her about afterwards (she was signing CDs in the back of the theatre). It is called "Ghost of Me" and will be on the next CD, she said. Very powerful! The crowd was very appreciative; and at the end of the concert gave her a standing ovation, bringing her back out for an encore. :-) She performed "Una furtiva lagrima" (from the opera "The Elixir of Love"...this song is on her new CD also). As always, her voice was as strong and moving at the end of the concert as it was in the beginning. Oh! We arrived early enough that we overheard her vocal exercises/warmups floating down from somewhere upstairs. :-) Little odds and ends I don't want to forget (and hope I am not already misremembering): "Into the Great Unknown" - a parable for all the struggle and pathway leading to getting this CD out, getting to this point in her musical career. "Going Home" - theme song "for a film that tanked" :-P She wrote it from the perspective of the soldier going home...making it a timeless sort of song. "Ben Aindi Habibi" - a sensual song about a girl waiting/hoping for her lover to return, in an old language that is a mix of Arabic and Spanish. She got it off an album she bought in Spain and was entranced by it. "Paolo" - about a beautiful person, almost too good for this world. His English was not good; but it was so poetic, even when "wrong", that no one corrected him. He would sometimes be found on hands and knees trying to find his "lenses of contact". :-) "Annie, Roll Down Your Window" - about her sister and about their travels together ("and it's ALL true!"). She said they always have such fun together. :-) "Kindness Can Be Cruel" - I cannot remember who the person was that inspired this...but she intended it to have an operatic flair/feel to it. "Dream of You" - she said she is often inspired by cinema. One night late she was watching the Hitchcock movie (she loves Hitchcock) "Vertigo" on TV and wondered what a theme song for that would sound like...and that's how this song was born. P.S. Her band was GREAT! I don't remember any of their names, but the sound problems of the opening act were not there at ALL. Everything was lovely, perfect, atmospheric, rocking (when it rocked out--and it DID!), absolutely wonderful! :-) If you get a chance to see Mary in concert, GO! Be enthralled and come away happy. :-) And buy her new CD. :-) fleur ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Jun 2003 08:35:19 EDT From: Phuesma@aol.com Subject: Re: ecto-digest V9 #157 Most beautiful voices Happy (ofcourse) My God, if I could sing like her. It seems easier for women to tap into their head/falsetto voices than men. Several of my favorite female singers are altos (I think) who can hit those high notes by squeezing down their vocal cords and going up into a higher register. Examples: Ms. Rhodes, Joni Mitchell, Karrin Allyson, Laurel McDonald. Males seem to have a harder time of it using head voice/falsetto. Especially white guys. All you have to do is think of the BeeGees at their chirpy best in the disco hits of the late 70s. Blacks have a tradition of using the falsetto, so there are a lot of soul singers who go right up into the falsetto very smoothly. I must admit, though, I have heard a few black guys casually slaughtering songs in the falsetto register. (Sorry if my terminology is wrong. Some people make a distinction between head voice and falsetto. Im not sophisticated enough to know the difference.) Laurel McDonald has a small, sometimes harsh voice, but she can do amazing things with it. She deserves an award for doing the most with what God gave her. She is a Canadian who leans toward world music, Irish music, and uses ectoish vocal and instrumental techniques. Lucy Crane the only reason I know she exists is from an album recorded by jazz bassist Marc Johnson. The album is _Two By Four_ and Lucy Crane sings "Beautiful Love" and "Ain't Misbehavin." She has a light, breathy voice (though tobacco stained) and takes a Tony Bennett approach. She is great and deserves to have jazz albums of her own. Karrin Allyson a jazz singer. She controls every atom of breath that comes out of her mouth. She also knows how to emote. Other singers would do well to study her control. She also has good taste in her choice of songs. Karen Carpenter what a great alto voice. The world would be a better place if some producer had grabbed her and given her several albums worth of great songs to sing. If she had sung Leonard Cohen songs or Elvis Costello songs, she wouldnt be a minor player who got famous singing potato chip jingles. Judee Sill another alto. She wasnt a flashy singer with a lot of range but she can melt you with her voice. David Palmer if you ever wonder who that tenor is singing "I Dont Want to Do Your Dirty Work," with Donald Fagen singing in the background, on Steely Dans first album, its David P. His is not a rock and roll voice, but it sure is pretty. Matthew Sweet another guy with a beautiful tenor voice. His voice is always better than the songs he sings. He sings a song on _If I Were A Carpenter_ (Carpenter tribute) and makes it a heartbreaker with his voice alone. He also needs a producer to help him pick songs. Carl Wilson the Beach Boy with the best voice, though all of the boys were pretty good. John and Paul the best rock and roll singers so far? Randy Erwin he sang on a couple of albums with Cafi Noir. He has a strong baritone voice and can yodel like crazy. Hes a pretty good whistler and can do rope tricks. He's not great but gets credit for being crazy. Alfred Deller I was completely mystified the first time I heard a Deller recording. I had to know who the eerie soprano with the slightly hollow voice was. Well, it was a countertenor. Sometimes his voice slips into Margaret Dumont territory but there is always a pleasantly chilling quality to his singing. Roy Orbison wow. He claims he never used falsetto. He must be packing three octaves of voice. I know he is over-dramatic, but you forgive him because of the power and beauty. David LaFlamme - another rock and roll baritone. Just think "White Bird" by It's a Beautiful Day and you will be able to hear his voice. It is hard to pull off a voice that big and round in rock and roll, but LaFlamme does it. Rock and roll seems to favor thinnish Jagger/Davies voices. I like to hear the thick-voiced baritones, since they are a rarity. I could go on but Ive already used too much space.
