The rest of the ep was surprisingly standard to me, pop songs following the usual structure, some particularly catchy and melodic, others forgettable. Worth the money, but more something to listen to in anticipation of her developing further. I think Charlotte's youth shows through, the way she veers from conventional to Tori-ish, not always finding her place inbetween. There are full song samples on her website, along with some ghastly flash or some-such redundant system-hogging technology. Also a song on the 'Sweet Home Alabama' soundtrack? I found the extras on Tori's website so difficult to navigate I never use it even though I was greatly looking forward to it. I never found any of the bonus music. And I never got I look forward to trying Mary's though. For the record, the cd is still growing on me, but it's not because it's a solo project. I'm was'nt expecting a cd with the October Project sound, but something more along the lines of "Lenses of Contact," which I personally found stunning. That ep, to me, really showcased Mary as a solo talent. I don't miss October Project at all when listening to it. I haven't listened to the 2 albums together yet either, but I'm pretty sure they were rerecorded and changed for the album. As Bill said, there are positives and negatives about having such a range of styles on one album. While it can make an album less cohesive, it can also make an album more interesting and highlight Mary's voice in different ranges. I just haven't quite figured out how it all adds up for ME, but I know there's plenty that I do like, more than enough to recommend it to other people. That's a fascinating list. I haven't heard enough Jeff Buckley to comment, and I far prefer Elizabeth Fraser to Lisa Gerrard in that odd little genre. But I'm right with you on the other three, after some consideration about nature of beauty in singing. (man, have i mentioned i love this list. ah, i have? good.) Ms. Harris is an extraordinarily accomplished singer: i always have the sense that she achieves her goals for every performance. And she has continued to do that has her voice has worn and evolved. She's singing in a tradition that can be hard for some to accept, and has managed to make it accessible to a wide audience without trivializing it. There's dust and sun and long hot nights in her voice, and yet through the weary experience there's still the simplicity and sense of place and home inherited from the real American folk tradition. Mr. Sylvian has been dancing on the edge of utter pretension since his days in Japan, but when he actually gets down to making noises, his joy in the process is always evident, and that allows one to forgive a lot. He has a sense of space, of leaving time and room for listening, that is rare in popular music (Mark Hollis comes to mind as well). And there's that warm beehive glow, that comes not just from attitude but also from a fundamentally good set o' pipes, as it were. Mr. Bowie doesn't really have a good set o' pipes, despite his sometimes successful dips into crooning. But as KaTe said in some interview or another, what's impressive is what he does with a limited "instrument". For me, the beautiful instances of his singing are not the obvious ones, like "Time", but the cracked edges of something like "Joe the Lion" that simply no one else could do. (Interestingly, though Bowie is one of those great prolific songwriters with sometimes awkward performances, I've never in the slightest thought of him as someone best listened to via covers, as recently discussed here...) So, if I were to throw out a few more names: Kate Bush (for having a perfect instrument, a refined talent, and *still* singing like Bowie does) Happy Rhodes (for all those magic moments when her low voices breaks through the glitter of high harmonies like a sight of the ground through the fog from a landing plane) and to a lesser degree Heidi Berry (warm and cosy and wise) Iarla O'Lionard (up there with any of the [astonishingly talented] women singing in the trad celtic tradition) and most likely everyone else to be mentioned here, since ectophiles certainly know what. And over a beer or two I'd happily argue oddball cases like James Hetfield (cause he's doin' it on purpose, as the skate kids say) and Neil Young (for that performance of "Helpless" from "The Last Waltz" -- a movie that also featured an ethereal, almost vampiric Emmylou Harris...) Beauty has a way of coming in sideways... - -g n.p. the "Drone Zone" channel in iTunes - -- I have never been afraid to change the circumstances of the world - -- Happy Rhodes ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Jun 2003 23:42:08 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Most beautiful voices Hi, Well, it took long enough for someone to mention Happy!!! That in-the-span-of-a-note swing from the very top of her register to the very bottom gives me chills every single damned time. And to see her do it live is even more stunning -- there is *no* discernible effort being expended there. None. It's truly something to see. Dan Stark pointed Charlotte out to me last spring, and I was hooked. I'd also recommend the One Girl Army EP -- get it now, before it goes out of print and you're kicking yourself in a year. :) I recommended it highly last summer on Emergent Music, which I think is a pretty cool site for discovering (and aiding in the discovery of) new music. If only more people used it. :\ Here's what I wrote: In this two-track preview of the forthcoming One Girl Army, Charlotte Martin enchants with her delicate-to-full piano melodies and haunting vocals. The lighter of the songs, "Raven" goes from sparse keys to textured layered vox and ghostly reverbs. On the umptempo "Girl I Left Behind Me" -- perhaps Sarah Slean's dark side, if she has one -- Martin rocks out, backed by solid percussion and electronic distortions. Her voice is finely tuned instrument, ranging from crystal clear and soaring to deep and resonant, perfectly suited to her introspective lyrics. Charlotte's actually signed to RCA, not Sony, and her major-label debut is scheduled to be "In Parentheses," an EP, this summer. For those of you in the SF Bay Area, Charlotte is opening for Damian Rice Thursday and Friday at Cafe du Nord in SF.
