They are an excellent blend of Indian traditional sounds, folk music and something punchier. Her version of "Up Where We Belong" goes to a different place. In her hands, the imagery is suddenly clearly Native American, and feels very different then the more popular version. neal At 12:51 PM -0700 5/29/03, Joseph Zitt wrote: >Phillip Hudson wrote: >>Who's Buffy ? >>;) > >A Sixties folksinger, known for songs such as "My Country 'tis of >your People You're Dying", "God is Alive, Magic is Afoot", and a >vibrato that could have dredged the Grand Canyon. I've been running across some wonderful unexpected versions of songs that I had thought irredeemable, mostly stumbling across them at the playlist at work. Two that jump to mind are "Ces Soiries L`" by Yannick (covering "Oh What a Night (September 1963)") from the really fun Putumayo _Cover the World_ collection, and "Take Me Home, Country Roads" from _Facing Future_ by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. (A couple of days back, at an unusually boring register shift, I forced myself to learn how to spell his name.) (And a "register shift" used to mean something quite different when I was programming assembler code...) And I think some of my coworkers thought I'd gone around the bend a few days ago when I was enthusiastically telling some people who were buying a Captain and Tennille CD about their hilarious cover of "Happy Together", which includes a bullfight. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jun 2003 11:13:02 -0700 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Buffy prop auction Joseph Zitt wrote: > "Ces Soiries L`" by Yannick Oy, that got badly eaten by character encoding. It was a tiny affair -- a dozen people -- due to last-minute scheduling and such. Everyone had a great time, and most, if not all, bought CDs. As a performer, Andrew is highly entertaining, extremely funny and a great storyteller. The first time I saw him, he was opening for Matt Nathanson. I had no idea who he was, but he totally blew me away. In terms of working with for LRC stuff, Andrew is very friendly, totally a down-to-earth guy, and was very patient and understanding. He didn't even mind beating me to my house (he was early, I was stuck in traffic). I'm surprised to find I'm not the only one who didn't know. We will almost certainly be at the Tin Angel shows. I LOVE THE TIN ANGEL. There's just something about it that makes for a very fun time. Happy always seems very relaxed and isn't afraid to be goofy and is always way way funny. If the Tin Angel has a problem, it's with their seating situation, and the fact that it's usually very very hot there. I know meth hates the place, but if you could hear what I'm hearing with these shows (and you will, I guarantee), the difference between a Happy show at the Tin Angel, and a Happy show just about anywhere else, is HUGE. The music is always top-notch, as is her voice, but her demeanor is far more reserved elsewhere. I'd love to make the Bottom Line, but that's more problematic, monitarily and logistically. We'll see. (Btw, I think I've sent the URLs to everyone who's asked. More?? Anyone can write me) Vickie ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #155 **************************
