Among the stories alluded to on the cover was one on Jewel's makeover, or Jewel's new image, or something like that. I was able to eyeball the story only hastily, and didn't retain much (big loss :-) ). But it seemed to play up the notion that Jewel has recently been playing with multiple images (cowgirl, high-fashion, _et al._), along with multiple musical idioms, because she can finally afford to, after her years at the journeyman level of he business. That's about all I remember. If these things are important to you (which they might be, given the size of our recent thread), and your march to checkout is slow this weekend, you might get something out pf that article, albeit probably not much, particularly if you're a seasoned Jewel-watcher already. I even think I was probably frustrated too because I had read somewhere that the new album wouldn't come out until the summer of next year. That's a long time! ;) So in the meantime, I was looking up everything I could on her music. One other name seemed to keep popping up when I searched for her: Happy Rhodes. Still I had a Pink Floyd and a Saint Etienne phase to go through before I would go all out and just plop down money on someone whom I had heard of but haven't heard. Plus, I never saw her stuff in stores, and this was way before hi-speed or mp3s made any sense to me. Finally in 2000, I was newly living in Orlando again and was going through all the pop/rock CDs at the Virgin Megastore. That's when I saw her. I thought it was the coolest packaging: Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. It was still a couple more visits though before I plopped down the 17.99 plus tax. When I did, I immediately put the CD in my car's player and thought 'wow this stuff is slow.' I didn't really like. I played it more at home a few times and still wasn't all that into it. Slowly tho, the first song that got to me was the third track. And then the fourth track. Before I knew it I was loving the first track, and listening to these made me realize how layered and intricate her music is. I always loved listening to albums again and again just to hear the noises I hadn't noticed before. Not only that, but that album to me....I guess I kind of think of it as a good bath that forms into a foamy lather the more you listen to it. ....Woj recently sent me 'The Keep' and 'Building the Colossus.' ( thank you!') Righht now I am really in love with the first three tracks and the last track of 'Building the Colossus.' Our hostess in Maple Shade was Robin Parry, who is very active in the Philadelphia music scene. I don't think she's on the list. If I can come up with enough chairs I'd love to host one of these things myself. I don't know about other house concerts in the works; I sure hope so. What a wonderful, intimate venue for seeing an artist. I'm staggering because I don't want a lot of people to download at the same time. If you haven't written me yet, don't be shy, I'm loving hearing from you, be it long-time Ectophile or people who've never posted. A word about "lurkers." That word may be used in a derogatory way in some places, but please know that I don't intend it to be at all. It's a perfectly fine word to indicate someone who doesn't post much or at all. I go through periods where I don't post much myself (I'm in an upswing here) and I don't mind referring to myself as a lurker during those times. If you are a lurker on Ecto, these songs are for you too! If you want to hear them, they're for you. My request for an "essay" was mainly to differentiate those who were interested in Happy from those who might, for some reason, read these posts on Usenet (via the fa.ecto link) and try to get them as a lark, while not being interested in Happy at all. (Those who are interested in Happy AND get their ecto via the fa.ecto link are perfectly welcome to write me. I just need a short essay from you if you've never posted to ecto before). As I said, don't be shy. I'm not going to post a list of who got the songs on Ecto or anything like that. The list is for me (and for Happy, if she should ever ask for it). I haven't been following this thread, but, for whatever it's worth, a few years ago I saw Jewel in one of the late-night talk shows, and when being asked about her artistic future, even back then she stated (after only a couple of albums out) that she was done with popular music (strumming her guitar, singing), and it was time to "do something else". Relatively shortly after the talk show interview she came out with her poetry book. I remember thinking to myself as I watched the interview that she wasn't "any good" if she wasn't into making music for the long run; granted, that was a shallow thought on my part, but such feelings arose in me all the same. Perhaps that's just who she is, someone who tries one thing out, masters it, lives it out, and then moves on to the next thing. Not my style of choice, but a very popular style nonetheless. Either way, I don't own any Jewel CDs; I have been tempted many times to buy the first CD (I think that's the one I like), but haven't managed to push myself over the edge. - - Bill G. np: Wendy Carlos - Switched-On Bach 2000 nr: Po Bronson - What Should I Do with My Life? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jun 2003 00:19:29 -0400 From: "Mark Chapman" Subject: Maple Shade House Concert So when does 300 miles of driving seem "like nuthin'"??
