Recommended. PJ Harvey is playing the Tate Modern, but the gig sold out in about two hours. I got an e-mail fromthe fanbase mailing list telling me to look out for news at 7:30 Tuesday morning. At 8 I checked my e-mail and they'd posted the link to book tickets online. Unfortunately, whenever I tried it, all I got was a notice saying the server was down. I tried a few times, and finally at 10 I phoned, only to be told it was all sold out. She's the first person to do a gig there, apparently - what a gig that will be! adam k. - ------------------------------------------------ This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 15:17:29 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: Veda dates Here's a really cool fundraiser concert with Veda and a bunch of other folk and world music performers in Vancouver.... Plus, the new album is called "0304"... kinda reminds me of that Yes album called "90125", named after the catalog number the label had given it. That was one of most commercial (and one of my least favorite) Yes albums, ever. Maybe when an artist does a move like this, it represents a kind of surrender to the whole music biz system. Oh well... despite all the stories like this, there's also artists like Aimee Mann, who are putting out only the albums they want to put out, on their own labels, and being quite successful at it. - -Neb - ---Original Message--- Jewel Pleasing Fans Online, on Tour Tue May 27, 5:01 PM ET http://tinylink.com/?1th0gKf57i excerpt from article- "Jewel dips into dance music and jazz on the new album, evidenced by first single "Intuition," which is No. 43 this week on Billboard's Hot 100. "0304" is the follow-up to 2001's "This Way," which debuted at No. 9 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 1.49 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan." __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Subject: Calling all UK ectos: Help Thea Gilmore strike an ecto blow! In July, Thea will be releasing the first single, "Juliet" off of her forthcoming album, "Avalanche". As she's currently signed to a small independent label called Flying Sparks, she's going to need a little help to make any ripple in the public consciousness, and the label is calling on all fans for a leg-up. They've sent me the following blurb: "The one thing that would catapult Thea Gilmore into a much bigger arena and give her the platform she so deserves is a SINGLES CHART POSITION!!! Question is, how do we get Thea into the top 40, and by-pass the unfair restrictions suffered by independent record labels.well the guerilla sales tactics department of Flying Sparks have come up with a plan that can achieve this. However we need your help, we need you to tap into your rebellious, belligerent side. Thea's single is coming out in two different versions with two different "b" sides on each separate single - these "b" sides are new tracks that don't appear on the new album and will not be available anywhere else - oh and yes, they're all brilliant too! So there's a total of 5 different tracks spread over two singles. Each single will retail at around #2.99 each. That's #6 for 5 tracks, not a bad deal?!! We need Thea Gilmore fans to help in two ways. Firstly we need you to pop into your nearest HMV or Virgin store and request that they stock both formats of the new Thea Gilmore single when it's released in July, don't take no for an answer! Secondly and this is the important bit, we need you to pledge to buy a double pack of the single in the week of release. If you are particularly flush and you feel that you have a friend out there who's life would be enhanced by owning a Thea Gilmore song, then feel free to buy another couple of copies for them at the same time. We're hoping that a number of you may have the resources to buy in bulk and indoctrinate as may potential music fans with the gospel of Thea Gilmore as possible!!! If this stretches the purse too far, maybe you could suggest to a few friends that they get out and buy the singles themselves..IN THE WEEK OF RELEASE!" Okay, that's the blurb. The details are: Single 1 - YRGNUH S1 Juliet b/w Throw The Bouquet Lightening Single 2 - YRGNUH S2 Juliet b/w Hooligansville Like Lead Rise up, rise up and strike a resounding, eloquent blow for good music. For those of you who know Thea's music, you'll know what to do and why. For those who don't....well, now's as good a time as any. adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 2003 13:28:22 -0700 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Fwd: Jewel Pleasing Fans Online, on Tour Neb Rodgers wrote: > I was never a big Jewel fan anyway, but I'm not *pleased* to hear about > her new artistic direction! Well, this kind of throws me back to the late 70s, when musicians such as The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and Blondie were trying a track here and there with dance beats, causing some fans to stop listening to anything else that they would do since they had "gone disco". I've done a lot of avant-garde music in my time, and I'm finding myself returning to accesible sounds and song forms nowadays. Could it be that, rather than selling out, Jewel actually *wants* to make music incorporating these materials, and, now that she's no longer living in a van with limited means, is able to try them out? I'm quite curious about the album, especially as the message mentions her dipping into jazz. (Though I wonder what that will mean -- after all, to 90% of the people who buy jazz in our store, the genre covers the huge spectrum between Norah Jones and Diana Krall (both of whom I kinda like, but still...) with an occasional dip into Frank Sinatra.) ------------------------------ Date: 29 May 2003 06:10:33 +0800 From: Alan Subject: Re: Buffy prop auction On Wed, 2003-05-28 at 09:23, Sherlyn Koo wrote: > Hey folks, > > If any of you are Buffy-obsessed gazillionaires, you might be interested in some of > the props which are currently onsale via Ebay - check out > http://www.buffyauction.com. > > Apparently one of Spike's outfits already sold for US$13,000. I'm dumbfounded. Yeah. Amazing what people will pay to get a piece of their favorite TV show. Now if they were auctioning off Alyson Hannigan, it would be worth it. ]:> - -- Alan ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #150 **************************
