I'm afraid I can't help you out Phil. But I can enthusiastically agree with everything you said. Ottmar Liebert lives in New Mexico, so his name and music comes up plenty around here. Calling it Flamenco is a real injustice. It's new age with a taste of flamenco. It makes fine background music to chiropractic adjustments (where I have heard it a lot) and good dinners. I had a friend who was a big fan when I lived in Baltimore. I heard the CD plenty of times at her house, and even consented to seeing him in concert (at the 9:30 club, no less!). It was one of the most boring shows I've ever seen. No energy, no crowd interaction. Just endless bland guitar runs. Even my friend (a fan) had to admit that it was boring. My suggestion is that you throw that CD away and order something by someone you've never heard of from Spain. neal np: CD Sampler - Vinx ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 May 2003 03:00:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************** Chandra Sriram (no Email address) ******************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Chandra Sriram Thu May 27 1971 Gemini Taina Sahlander Mon May 28 1973 Gemini Urs Stafford Thu May 31 1973 Give Way Perttu Yli-Krekola Thu June 02 1966 Kaksoset Alex Gibbs Thu June 08 1967 Betelgeuse Gleb Zverev Tue June 09 1964 Gemini Sonja Juchniewich Mon June 10 1963 Pegasus Joerg Plate Mon June 12 1967 Gemini Chris Montville Tue June 13 1978 Gemini Ectoplasm (original name) Mailing List Thu June 13 1991 Fuzzier blue Paul Huesman Wed June 14 1967 coffee drinker Mark R. That never happens to any of us, ever. :) Things that pop up when poking around the net (besides lots of Happy FAQ broken links....damn): This was at: http://www.themesh.com/more6.html C:\ Happy Rhodes by Steve Zucal Happy Rhodes, Poughkeepsie-born singer/songwriter, is no "newbie" to fans of her music on the Internet. Since the appearance of her release "Ecto" in 1987, she has been the topic of spirited Internet discussion. It all started with a small group of fans who called themselves the "Ectophiles," after the album "Ecto." But the "Ectophiles" idea has expanded to allow fans to discuss many other artists who fit into this genre... an "open platform" if you will. Happy explained that in 1987 Vickie Mapes had been an active participant in a group called rec.music.gaffa that had been a discussion group about Kate Bush. At the time Vickie had been doing a radio show in Kansas City and had discovered Happy's music and began programming some of Happy's cuts into her show. Then people began discussing Happy and her music in this particular group. But it seems as if not everyone liked having Happy's music discussed there and "a lot of flaming" led to a new group starting. So Jessica (Dansky) Koeppel, also a big supporter, began an electronic mailing list called Ecto. "One of the things that made that list different back then is that they decided it would be a 'positive' mailing list, agreeing to treat each other kindly and not to have any flame wars," Happy recalled. They sometimes called themselves as "the warm and fuzzy blue group." But all this time Happy herself did not really understand how she was gaining such popularity. "I had no knowledge of it... I mean I knew that it was happening... There was just something called the 'Internet'... that's all I knew... it was just some nebulous thing," she mused, " ...but what happened was the mailing list just grew and grew... and these are all hard-core fans... and then I started releasing all of my material on CD and then it just exploded!" That was then. Now with 8 albums under her belt, Happy is back in the studio working primarily on a special CD with previously unreleased material, "The Keep," to be available October 17th--and on a completely new compilation to come out in the summer of 1996. All of her releases are available on the Aural Gratification label. Happy's 1987 album "Ecto" has been the focal point for a lot of her support. On IRC there is a channel #ECTO that is a very happening place on Saturday nights. Next time online be sure to stop by the ECTO home page at http://www.tela.bc.ca/ecto/ It is a very comprehensive compilation that includes just about everything you ever wanted to know about Happy Rhodes, her partner and associate Kevin Bartlett, and lots of very interesting goodies! It contains lyrics, album covers, a FAQ on Happy, an online list of every article or interview she has done, a history of her releases, biographical information and more. It is maintained by Neil Guy and serves as an excellent model for an interesting website. "They have artwork of mine... and all kinds of things that I didn't even know they had," Happy told me excitedly, "and we are working on getting our own official Aural Gratification web page up shortly. The newsgroup is alt.music.ecto and it is very eclectic. Ever since I became a Happy fan I have obtained and given away her music. It used to be cassettes (woj can attest), then CDs, now mp3s (and still, CDs). Spread the music, that's my motto. I've given countless away to musicians ranging from Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos. I've given them to actors, and directors, ranging from Philip Noyce to Peter Jackson to Neil Jordan. I've given them away to people I'm standing in line with at the movies. I've given them away to people I'm standing in line with for concerts. I've given them away to relatives (Chris's niece, who is named Gabrielle, got an Equipoise). I've given CDs away to people who looked interesting on the train. I'm not really tooting my own horn, because all this giving away hasn't, after all, other than woj, done a damn bit of good, but I keep doing it and I will keep doing it, because You Never Know, right? I do buy CDs directly from Happy, and I've bought them from stores, and I sometimes "rescue" them from Used Bins. I also occasionally buy from eBay (that's why all the set up, to let people know I'm not trying to take anything away from Happy). I'll bid usually 6-8 bucks and if I get outbid, it's no big deal. They obviously wanted it, and if they pay close to what it costs to buy it from Happy, maybe they WILL buy something else from her next time. So, the funny run-in... I just almost got outbid for 2 Happy CDs by none other than David Torn. I hate this phrase, but I really am Laughing Out Loud at the thought. I wrote him and said (smiling) can't you just ask Happy to send you a couple? :-) I don't know if this is against the rules but I told him how much I bid ($6) so he could go 6.50 if he wanted. I don't suppose the guy is rolling in dough, so maybe he does need them cheap. I didn't ask him. In a bidding war (not really) with someone who's played on Happy's albums. That's so bizarre! :-) :-) He's got a store, so I guess he resells them. I take it it is the same David Torn, but all of his links go to pages that are in German, which I can't read. Not so bizarre, is the guy who's doing a "Buy It Now" of Rhodes I for $24.83 (what an odd price!). I wrote him and said "Are you serious?" and that they could easily be gotten from Happy's web site. He says in his description that it's out of print, which is technically true, but Happy does still list them. I plan to write anyone who bids on it and let them know about auntiesocialmusic.com. People really should do web searches before they go and pay big bucks for something. Lastly, what in the world is the deal with Live At World Cafe Vol. One CD? Happy's on it, and it always goes for major bucks. It's sure not Happy fans who are spending that much. At least whoever's buying them for their artist (Tori??) will probably listen to the other tracks at least once, and hear Happy. I'd listen to the whole darn thing if I paid a hundred and whatever for a CD with one song. Well, Torn never came back. In the time writing this the auction ended and I got them. At least I'll be giving them away and not re-selling them. Lastly (really) there's an HR5 starting at $1 listed, if anyone's interested. Things are really heating up in the media deregulation fight. We need your help to take it to the next level. This week, we are rushing to place provocative ads in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and Daily Variety, focusing on Robert Murdoch of Fox as the poster boy of media monopoly. This will cost us around $80,000. We're also planning to place TV ads on the same theme, starting Thursday in New York and Washington D.C., for another $100,000. Can you help us raise the funds to make this happen? You can check out the ads and contribute to run them at: https://www.moveon.org/monopoly/ June 2 is the Federal Communications Commission deadline, so we've got to act now. Today, we're joining with groups from the NRA to the National Organization for Women to discuss the upcoming rule change with the two Democratic FCC commissioners. We'll be there with a copy of our petition -- over 15,000 pages of eloquent comments that make an impressive case against media deregulation. It's an unprecedented meeting: to our knowledge, FCC Commissioners have never before had to resort to bringing opposing viewpoints literally into the FCC headquarters to make their voices heard. Unfortunately, there's no sign that FCC Chairman Michael Powell is listening or slowing his pace. He's probably concerned that if he waits any longer, our momentum will grow to the point where a rule change is no longer politically feasible. That's why it's critical that we kick up the volume now. In partnership with Common Cause and Free Press, we have developed television and newspaper ads that discuss the possible consequences of an approved rule change. The ads feature conservative media mogul Rupert Murdoch, the man behind the Fox News empire. Under the new rules, Murdoch could acquire hundreds of new outlets, and wield tremendous influence through biased and one-sided reporting. Check out the ads and help us run them at: https://www.moveon.org/monopoly/ It remains likely that the rule change will pass: the three Republican commissioners seem unlikely to bend to popular opinion. But this is just the first step in a longer battle. Congress is paying attention, and it has the power to repudiate the FCC. Whether or not our elected representatives take action depends on how much feedback they receive on this issue. Ours is a majority, bipartisan position: Most Americans simply don't want a few big corporations controlling all their access to information and entertainment. With your help, we can turn this situation around, and maintain the laws that ensure a diverse and competitive media. Sincerely, - -Eli Pariser MoveOn.org May 27th, 2003 >P.S. There's a current one that has a Buy it Now price of $134.00. A closer look though, reveals that the last 2, priced at $140.00, failed to get a single buyer, so maybe people are getting smarter. Not that I think it's dumb to pay money, if you have it to burn, for things you really really want. If I had big bucks, I'd pay a pretty price for the tape Happy sent to a friend in England when she was, I think, 16, her singing songs into a tape recorder a la Cathy Demos. You just know that the tape got taped over long ago, or is mouldering in some shoebox or junked car trunk. Where IS that guy? He's the one who sent Happy a tape of Kate, and started that thing off. (I would, of course, make mp3s and CDs immediately available to all, as much as Happy would no doubt disapprove. How could you not want to share something like that?) I'd also pay big bucks for that motorcycle gas tank, the one with the Rhodes I monster painted on it. That's probably painted over or crushed to bits. So, I kinda understand, but this in particular doesn't seem like a big deal for Tori fans. I suppose it would be if you were trying to collect a whole set of World Cafe CDs. (there just seems something wrong with the idea of collecting a full set of...CDs? I can't put my finger on it. It's just not like collecting vinyl. Could be worse. Could be cassette.
