I'm hoping someone on the list can help me out; I have listened to Ottmar Liebert, hotly touted as the NF poster boy, only to be disappointed and marginally offended by his apparent appropriation of a fiery, passionate musical idiom simply to further blur the lines between popular commercial release and elevator music. Even the cutesy chic juxtaposition of languages irritates me. (It's "Nuevo", cos the Spanish invented it!!) Real Flamenco is the energy of fire and air, ringing strings, lightning arpeggios, stamping feet and high voices, sometimes rising to a glorious and stirring cacophany. It's loud, sweaty, and extremely hard work for the performers. But done well, it makes you want to dance in the street with a rose in your teeth, or execute some other hopelessly romantic Latin gesture. Liebert on the other hand, just puts me to sleep, which would be quite handy except that he annoys me musically in the process; he sounds like he either just can't play any better than he does, or simply doesn't see the need. The real shame is that I have seen far better Flamenco musicians finish their set and immediately go back to being waiters in the same estblishment. The NF that I have heard is for me, terminally vapid and rather a poor excuse for the kind of energy that real flamenco generates. Liebert's themes are very predictable, and never take you anywhere you didn't expect; in most cases, I can predict what the next chord will be fairly easily. I have never heard Liebert play anything approximating a fast arpeggio. I kept listening to his album waiting expectantly for something to happen. No peaks, no valleys, just this strange, minimalist musical flatline. Does anyone on Fuzzy know of a NF artist worth listening to, or is there a Liebert album where he's not apparently playing on triple-strength Valium? Am I being unduly harsh on poor old Ottie? Or is it all just another Readers Digest musical genre? Any help will be much appreciated. Inquiring morons need to know. Muchas Mercis Phil np: Nouveau Native American.
