This CD is so great. I've been listening to it for months now, and I love it more and more. Karry Walker, whose project it is, is a phenomenal songwriter-- the songs are lyrically interesting enough to bear multiple listenings and interepretations, but emotionally intense enough to totally draw me in from first listen. Karry pretty much made the whole thing in her bedroom, recorded it herself and played most of the instruments. Production sounds something like Sparklehorse, who maybe isn't really Ecto, but is still pretty damn great. In a similar vein, I just heard Inner-- Jen Turner's new project and was blown away by it. Also emotionally raw, and totally uncompromised. Great lyrics. She's up for a CA music award for best songwriter, but the first I'd heard of her was the other day. Think the website is www.caboosemusic.com Both bands making raw, pure music. One MIGHT even say that either one of them could fill any perceived void caused by Ms. Phair having "left her tree" as someone said. What a great expression :) Though I'm only listening to the banter here. I have not in fact heard Liz Phair's record myself. well, g'night :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 May 2003 15:42:21 -0400 From: meredith Subject: RE: Jewel??? Hi, Amy followed up: >I sure thought it sounded like Avril, and I don't think I'm alone. I was >disappointed. I mean, it's not bad, per se, but it's not Liz, you know? I >went to Liz' website and see that she's even dressing a little like Avril >now! Oh yeah. She looks just like Avril on the cover of the advance EP that went out to radio stations -- a friend of mine does a show on the University of New Haven station, and showed it to me last night. Pretty scary. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 May 2003 18:24:47 -0400 From: meredith Subject: anne heaton et al. Hi, Anne Heaton performed in New Haven last night. It was a benefit for The Space, a new arts collective that is opening up in Hamden, just down the street from where woj and I live. The Space is going to be amazing -- a 150-seat venue with good sound and a great vibe, run for the sole purpose of providing the New Haven area with the mid-sized, smoke- and alcohol-free music venue it has so desperately needed for so long. (I'm going to be booking shows in there, as well as helping them sign up people to play the feature set at their already-famous Tuesday night open mics.) Unfortunately, the day before The Space's official grand opening last week, the Hamden building inspector decided to prove just how big of an a-hole he is, so they're in limbo until they can raise the $20K needed to make the renovations he's demanding. (If anyone out there is feeling altruistic and would like to contribute to the cause, drop me a line. :) So on literally three days' notice, the show got moved to a church in New Haven where our friend Robert Messore (simply one of the most amazing acoustic guitar players on the planet) hosts a coffeehouse series. woj and I usually help out at this series, so we gladly took care of selling the cds. :) There were two openers on the bill: Jerree Small and Scott Sylvester. Jerree Small is a young singer/songwriter originally from Minnesota, who lived in the New Haven area for a few years before going up to western Massachusetts. (To know what she looks like, just imagine if Veda Hille straightened her hair and bleached it blonde.) She sings mostly quiet, simple songs that somehow avoid being boring wallpaper. I don't know exactly what it is, but even though she's not a very big person and doesn't have a particularly big voice (though it is quite a nice one) she's got something about her that draws your attention and doesn't let go. Since she moved to Massachusetts she's been playing open mics and such around the Northampton area, so those up in that region should keep an eye out for her and check her out. I'm going to have her here for a house concert sometime, too. Scott Sylvester was a nice surprise. He's from NYC, has amazing guitar chops, and writes high-energy folk/pop songs. His voice was reminding me of someone, and I couldn't figure out who until woj asked me later if he'd reminded me of Ellis Paul. Yes, exactly. I wouldn't go out of my way to see him again, but if he's on a bill with someone I want to see I won't show up late. Anne Heaton was accompanied by the always incredible Frank Marotta Jr., who was stylin' in a fresh new King's X tour t-shirt. She was in a particularly goofy mood, I think in part because she and Frank had been rehearsing at The Space all afternoon and she'd been drinking coffee the entire time. They did a whole lot of new songs, all of which were really good. Her songwriting is maturing, even darkening a little bit, and I think she's really benefitting from her musical partnership with Frank, because he's such a good player and he really adds a lot to the arrangements. The older songs they did were really good too, in particular "Spinning" and "Your Heart Is For Breaking". The only disappointing thing was that they didn't do "Black Notebook", but hey. At least when the inevitable "Megan and Kevin" came around, I finally got a bathroom break. ;) Speaking of Jewel, Anne is part of some weird online contest thing where she might win a chance to open for Jewel at a couple of shows on her upcoming tour. She already survived the first round of voting, and next month she'll fly to San Juan Capistrano where the four finalists will perform. Video clips of their performances will be posted to a web site, where a final round of voting will take place. (I can't remember which site, but if you go to I know the details are there.) She's approaching the whole thing with the appropriate sense of humor -- but hey, like she said if she wins she'll play in two nights for more people than she plays for in a year, and that can't possibly be a bad thing for the CD sales. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #138 **************************
