Actually FOLK IMPLOSION used to be quite good. I enjoyed their indie pop bittersweet hook filled songs. As they progressed though, I found that their music just devolved into boring college rock. FOLK IMPLOSION is a band led by LOU BARLOW. He's used to be in DINOSAUR JR ages ago, and was kicked out for reason I can't remember (anyone?). He later formed SEBADOH which never really scored a big hit, but were big in the "college scene" of the 90's. They were around for quite some time. In the meanwhile LOU BARLOW released a number of solo projects, under his own name, and the name SENTRIDOH. They were the inspiration for the whole "lo-fi" sound that came out during the mid 90's (the glut of CDs recorded on a 4-track recorder, with a guitar, and lyrics about a broken heart, was basically imitating LOU BARLOW around that time). Purely by chance, LOU BARLOW did a collaboration with a guy named JOHN DAVIS and one of the songs ended up on the soundtrack for KIDS. Calling themselves FOLK IMPLOSION that song NATURAL ONE ended up being LOU's biggest hit, with a MTV buzz bin video (remember BUZZ BIN?) and causing everyone to run out and try to track down all of FOLK IMPLOSIONS CD's. They had released a handful of 7"s and maybe one EP at the time. Because it was so successful, BARLOW ended up recording a few FOLK IMPLOSION records, while still trying to create a commercially successful SEBADOH album. Pretty much every SEBADOH album released after his success with FOLK IMPLOSION's NATURAL ONE song was heralded as "THIS WILL BE SEBADOH's BREAKTHROUGH ALBUM!!!!" They never had a hit. FOLK IMPLOSION never had a hit either. LOU pretty much put SEBADOH on hold, and from what I hear, he's made FOLK IMPLOSION his main focus. More info on LOU BARLOW can be found at his website http://www.loobiecore.com/ But probably this is MORE than enough information. For those interested, FOLK IMPLOSION's best album is probably DARE TO BE SURPRISED (though the album right after that ONE PART LULLABY has some great gems). For those interested in SEBADOH I'd recommend BAKESALE. And for those interested in just LOU BARLOW and his demos/side projects, pick up WINNING LOSERS a collection of home recordings by LOUIS BARLOW, ACOUSTIC SENTRIDOH (it'll be filed either under SEBADOH, or SENTRIDOH, or LOU BARLOW depending on where you find it). WINNING LOSERS is actually probably my favorite. It's BARLOW at his most sensitive and at his most diary like. Though in truth it's been forever since I've heard it. It may not have aged well. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 2003 03:00:02 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friends... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** *************** Patrick Varker (patrick.varker@na.omgi.com) *************** ************* Philip David Morgan (pmorgan@suffolk.lib.ny.us) ************* *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Patrick Varker Wed May 12 1954 Torius Philip David Morgan Sat May 12 1962 Chinese Tiger in Bull Clothing Steve Fagg Tue May 13 1958 Nightwol Karel Zuiderveld Fri May 13 1960 Stier Michael Colford Wed May 16 1962 Taurus Christopher Boek Tue May 19 1970 Taurus Julia Macklin Mon May 20 1968 ethereus Yngve Hauge Fri May 21 1971 Gemini Lisa Laane Tue May 22 1973 Gemini Jewel Kilcher Thu May 23 1974 The Gem Chandra Sriram Thu May 27 1971 Gemini Taina Sahlander Mon May 28 1973 Gemini Urs Stafford Thu May 31 1973 Give Way Perttu Yli-Krekola Thu June 02 1966 Kaksoset Alex Gibbs Thu June 08 1967 Betelgeuse Gleb Zverev Tue June 09 1964 Gemini Sonja Juchniewich Mon June 10 1963 Pegasus Joerg Plate Mon June 12 1967 Gemini - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 2003 10:18:05 -0700 From: Noe Venable Subject: Odessa Chen Hello to all in ectoland-- Want to mention a record I just heard. (you all know that she's playing at the 100 Club, yes?) unfortunately, I'll probably miss her in-store concert today since I messed up the date yesterday (I had a call from the airline, asking why I hadn't showed up for my flight. I'm so daft sometimes! I hope it will work out, the lady sounded sympathetic. worst case it gets a bit more expensive -- there's no way I'm going to miss this.) anyway, if any London ectophiles are going to the concert, perhaps we could meet? send me an SMS at +47 9366 0091. - -- Kjetil T. np. I am *very* glad I went. Hard to describe the experience. Mesmerizing is a good start. When ever there is an in store concert, there is at least one or more idiots that cannot shut up. (As Groucho Marx stated in Duck Soup "Vaccinated with a phonograph needle.") This was much different. When she played, everyone LISTENED. She has a gorgeous hypnotic quality to her voice that is even more pronounced live. Her set included a number of songs from her album and some new stuff not yet on an album. (But I will get it the nanosecond it is out.) An interesting side note... I have played her album a couple of times in my computer room. My cat will come in to listen to it on my lap. (He does not do that very often.) He has very definite musical tastes. I am not very good about describing music since much of the description is subjective. I do recommend her music highly. I run my own domain on my own FreeBSD box. And, I make a living writing C code for IVR applications on unix boxes. I just happen to use Windows as my desktop, and unix as my networking server. Yes, I too dislike Microsoft, but so far it's been too hard (or I've been too lazy) to swim against the stream. Maybe one of these days I'll get Mac OSX, or KDE on top of FreeBSD, or something like that; perhaps after I succeed in separating myself from corporate America and its Microsoft prostitution. - - Bill G. np: Heather Nova - Oyster ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 2003 21:01:12 -0700 From: "Bill" Subject: Re: fa.music.ecto usenet gateway I vote for removing the ecto gateway to usenet.
