I was ordering the Road Dog Divas, which I still haven't listened to but expect to like. I also ordered Rachel Smith's The Clearing, which is wonderful. Finally, someone recommended Awry's Quiet B Sides. Whoever that was, thanks! That was a great buy. A hint of the dreamy edginess of Hugo Largo and the floatiness of early Mia Doi Todd. I have thoroughly enjoyed this disc. So what new releases to add to that order? Andrew Kerr has a few CDs on CDbaby. His newest one is a live album, which I enjoyed thoroughly. It's very live, including a 10 seconds of a song in the wrong key :-) unlike, say _MIrrorball_, which had touchups afterward. And I must put in a good word for Charlotte as well. I saw her play to a packed house at the Hotel Cafe in February and it was one of those rare shows where the first time you see someone live you are blown away. (Kathrin Shorr did that to me a year ago... I highly recommend her live. Her CDs are good but don't quite do it for me.) Assuming the usual -- and unfortunate -- brevity of these kinds of things, we're also hoping to take in a solo set by Nicole Campbell, who is also performing the same night on the other side of town (but starting two hours later). If all goes as planned, it should be quite a night of live music. I'll be the first to admit I am a bit naive and not at all up on the latest & greatest state-of-the-art methods as far as how spammers garner all the email addresses (so take that into account, my naivety), but considering the web archives are just clones of the lists' digests, can they really gather up email addresses from the archives? (assuming they know WHERE to find them). I would think it wouldn't be the easiest task as each digest has a unique URL on the web. Or do they employ software that somehow could find the URL for the digests and suck the email addresses out of what it finds? I always assumed the online digest archives were relatively safe unless they were deliberately and manually targeted. WOJ? Jeff? Mike P.S. Coincidently or not, I myself noticed a HUGE increase in spam at my home addresses (both AOL and quackquack.net) after I upgraded to Windows XP and IE 6.0. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 May 2003 10:06:09 -0400 From: noam tchotchke Subject: sarah harmer tour dates! from the site : June 3rd Burlington, VT @ Higher Ground - 1 Main Street 802.654.8888 Tickets are $10 in advance visit www.highergroundmusic.com for more information. 18+ June 5th Bryn Mawr, PA @ The Point - 880 W. "california" was dramatic and intense. she did the whole stand-up-and-sing thing, swaying back and forth during the instrumental parts. "my children's dreams" is a quiet, slow reflective piece about her hometown and her parents. she joked that she can't play it near toronto for fear of word getting back to them -- of course, with this here internet thang, they'll know about it by tonight, i'm sure. ;) it's in the vein of "twin moon" and other songs like that. very lovely but sad too. "me i'm a thief" was great -- i like the the album version very much but the solo treatment is stunning too. it's not that different -- just lacking that pulsing bass and the guitar work -- but, at the same time, it's like a whole new song. also very "twin moon"-ish now that i think about it. as don might say, "a very satisfying show". ;) woj ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 May 2003 11:10:29 -0400 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: Re: sarah slean at the knitting factory noam tchotchke wrote: > saw sarah slean at the knitting factory (new york) last night. enquiring minds want to know: did you manage to drag the post-Blue Parade-Sarah-Slean-hating meth to the show? jeff n.p. _Pieces of You_, Jewel (on the subject of her lastest single...ewwww! thank goodness there's still PoY and _This Way_) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 May 2003 18:41:26 +0200 (CEST) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: ohhhh Hi, Just wanted to say that I got Vienna Teng - Waking Hour in the mail today, and I can't express how wonderful I thing it is. I think it has served as a recruiter on several occasions, people search for their favourite artist, and find references on ecto since that's where all the people with cool musical tastes hang out :-) > There's a special presumption of being in a closed group of > readers with a mailing list, that's why many people prefer them to > Usenet.
