I think The Storm is a very good CD. I hadn't heard about the new one yet. Thanks for the recommendation. I like your description. Karnataka reminds me of a progressive rock Clannad (maybe "h"-period Marillion meets Clannad) or a bit like Iona (which also has some prog rock leanings). - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Simon Barker Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2003 2:18 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Karnataka - Delicate Flame of Desire After the positive reviews of Karnataka's last album (The Storm), I'm surprised no-one's mentioned their new one - Delicate Flame of Desire. Compared to The Storm, Delicate Flame of Desire is definitely heavier on the electric guitars and percussion. At the same time, there's a lot more use of vocal harmonies. The end result is a sort of ecto-friendly prog rock. If you liked The Storm, I'd recommend checking it out. I had the same impression about this CD, especially her singing. I really think it's her smoothest and loveliest vocal performance to date. There is a roundness to it that I haven't noticed before. Not that I have issues with her previous vocal performances, mind you! I don't know what it is...a depth? a confidence? I wonder how much of the subtle changes in her vocals and the overall cohesiveness of this CD have to do with the fact that she is a mother now? It's certainly something she's wanted for a long time and has struggled with. Just a thought. Her lyrics are a little more accessible this time, too. I don't mind having to stretch to find the meaning to a song, but sometimes her references are so obscure as to only be known to her, it seems. In a way, this is cool because it allows the listener to attach his/her own meaning to a song, but sometimes it almost seems like a string of unrelated words. Off to Chicago for the weekend. Who knows...maybe I'll run into Vickie and Chris. Wouldn't be the first time...:) Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 May 2003 16:25:10 -0400 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: mp3 players Hi. I'm thinking about getting a portable mp3 player and thought I'd ask here for advice. I really don't know anything about them, but I'm thinking it might be a good way to conserve space (by transferring some of my cd collection onto a portable format.) So I guess my questions are about how much they cost, how much music they store, what the quality of sound is, which brands are better/worse, etc. Obviously the answers depend on which brand, but that's what I'd like to know. I don't want the worst out there, but I don't need the best either. The other thing is that I don't actually have a cd burner. I would be using my brother's, and he has a Mac. But if I ever got a cd burner, it would be for my computer which is a PC. So would that be a problem, or are the players built to work with either computer system? Thanks in advance for all your knowledge and help. If I've forgotten to ask something you think might be useful for me to know, please advise! I'm thinking about getting a portable mp3 player and thought I'd > ask here for advice. I currently own a (now-discontinued) 20-GB iPod. It's about 75% full, and I haven't finished ripping my CDs to MP3 to fill it. I will probably upgrade to a 30-GB iPod later this year. I started off with the original 5-GB iPod when it came out, and upgraded when the higher-capacity ones became available. My current 20-GB iPod has about 2600 songs on it, so I'm assuming that I'll top it out at around 3200. It depends on the bitrate you use for encoding MP3s; I tend towards 192 variable when I'm ripping my own MP3s. IMHO, the iPod has the following pros over the other MP3 jukeboxes (such as the Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox): * The battery life is stellar. I usually get 10-12 hours out of a single charge. That's enough for all but the longest of flights or drives. Most of the others don't come anywhere near this. * Adding songs via firewire is blazingly fast. The ones that use USB are horrible. * The new Apple Music Store means you can buy a single song for a buck, so it's a nice way to try out an artist before buying the whole album. (Requires a Mac currently, although that will be fixed by the end of the year.) * The size is much better than the competition. My iPod is similar in size to my Palm. (Yes, yes, I'm a gadget girl. I live in Silicon Valley, what do you expect?) The Nomad Jukebox is about the same size as a standard portable CD player, but is much much heavier. But it has some cons, too ... * It's more expensive. The new 30-GB iPod is $500, 15-GB is $400. The Nomad Jukebox is less expensive. * I'm not necessarily pleased with the software. I use my iPod on two different computers, and later releases of iTunes won't allow you to put a song on the iPod using one computer, and then get it off of the iPod from another computer. (You can get around this if you're geeky enough.) For the Windows version, it currently ships with MusicMatch, which I just despise. (If you have a Windows iPod, check out EphPod at .) My iPod is a Mac iPod. I use it with both my Win2k box at work and my Mac at home. To use it with my Windows box, you need software that will read Mac volumes (I use MacDrive) and EphPod (a freeware program for transferring songs to the iPod). I'm not sure why you brought up CD burners. The MP3 file format isn't platform-specific. Once you have an MP3, you can burn it to CD either as data, or convert it back to WAV and burn it as audio. I wrote up a review of the 20-GB Windows and Mac iPods at Amazon, which gives a bit more detail than I've discussed here. I should probably cut this off before I blather on any more. :) HTH. :) /nm ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 May 2003 14:13:06 -0700 From: Greg Bossert Subject: Re: mp3 players I'll add another vote for the iPod, particularly in light of the new Apple music service recently described here. Nadyne did a good job describing pros and cons, so I will just add 3 additional "pros" * the new Apple music service looks quite promising, and is obviously well supported by the iPod/iTunes suite. * my iPod seems just about indestructable * it's pleasing to use, both abstractly and in comparison to other such devices. i'll skip the long monologue about good design and such, and just say: it's pleasant to look at and it's pleasant to use, and i find that pleasantness an important attribute of any tool -- and one that is often overlooked in the name of cost-effectiveness and "practicality". - -g - -- "i've never been afraid to change the circumstances of the world" - -- Happy Rhodes - -- "except for bunnies..." - -- Anya ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 May 2003 14:32:46 -0700 From: Birdie Subject: Re: mp3 players I'm on a Mac and have been looking into them. The Rio Sport S35, or the previous Rio S30, looked good to me. They range from $135 - $175. Are made for sports, and look great. They have a FM radio, too. Check Ebay. I want mine for my pool exercise.... So, the iPod is less attractive, to me, as even if I seal it in a waterproof bag, the little bit where the headphone cable comes out, can leak - even if I keep it bagged and perched on a kickboard with a strofoam block on top of that....and frankly, the iPod's are just too expensive to risk getting wet or damp. Of course, I could dab some silicone sealant where the headphone cable comes out.... Hmmmm..... In any event, from this distance, the Rio Sports looked best to me, as I can be hard on things, and Sport versions of walkmans and CD players are built stronger and are, at least, water resistant. By the way, I jog around in the pool. I'd check out all the various Rio's. Anyone in the house have one? They work with Mac and PC's - so - chances are good. The new iPods, out today, come with both iTunes and MusicMatch. But you can't run both at the same time. There will be an iTunes for PC, as Apple has posted job openings for the port. I believe Steve Jobs indicated that they would like to have it done by the end of the year. So I googled The Like, Charlotte, and Mitchell Froom. It turns out that the band's drummer, Tennessee, is Pete Thomas' daughter. Who knew? One damn connected, kick-ass band. Augh. I just saw that Kristy Thirsk had a show at the Knitting Factory last night. And according to her website (www.kristythirsk.com naturally), she has a show at Genghis Cohen on Monday night. She's finishing up her solo album down here in L.A. Not only do I miss those shows because of work, but I can't attend the L.A. Has anyone else who has heard the new Jewel single thought that it sounds suspiciously like a Brittany/Christina teen-pop/R&B confection? *psst* now working with Linda Perry at the studio where I am a peon is Melissa Etheridge. Vienna Teng's show on Wednesday was good. I felt bad because the room was packed for the 10 PM performer, a girl named Lizzie West who was having a big bash thrown by her label, Warner Bros., and then the room pretty much emptied except for about a dozen asians and a couple of white people (including my friend Nick). But she did a solid job anyways. Man what a voice. I wasn't too thrilled by Lizzie by the way. She sounded to me and Nick like a poor man's Natalie Merchant filtered through the Bodeans, with a real aversion to enunciation. I swear it was all vowels with her.
