There's a great article about it in the NYT online about the new APPLE music store. The link is http://www.nytimes.com/2003/05/01/technology/circuits/01stat.html?8hpib though you may have to register to read it (it's free, and I've never been spammed from them before...). It details the reason why the new APPLE store may succeed while other online music services have failed. Anyway it sounds very promising, though it's only available on MAC's and pretty much only available portably for iPOD (though you are allowed to burn the songs onto CD). Which isn't necessarily a bad thing (being mac based) but it does limit things a bit. We'll see what happens when they finally release iTUNES for PC's. Regardless, I'll probably be watching it with interest. GROKSTER and MORPHEUS just won their lawsuit that the RIAA brought against them, so it might be interesting to see how that effects the profitability of APPLE's new venture. Irvin ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 08:22:58 +0100 From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: Joan Armatrading live/bad behaviour/Juliet Turner This is long overdue I've been watching from the wings and never even got to nominate my least fave vocalist (one of mine is sheer heresy and based only on the artist's first album, anyway, while another is rapidly becoming Cat Power). Meanwhile, I had another chance to see Joan Armatrading in concert over the weekend. What a wonderful performer. I can't speak highly of her enough. She exudes a warmth, humour and charm that makes you want to go up and hug her. The gig was in the Royal Albert Hall, somewhere I've only seen an opera in before. It's kind of cavernous, and the acoustics suffer, but she was magnificent. Apart from the acoustics, the only other drawback were the two girls behind me, who decided to express their love and dedication to Joan by singing along, extremely loudly and out of tune, thus ruining "The Weakness in Me" for everyone around them. Requests from various of us that they keep it down were met with withering scorn: We, of course, were not true fans, but mere dilettantes. These girls owned Joan, and the concert was theirs. At another, poignant moment in the gig, I was distracted by a blue light, and noticed the woman in front of me was checking her mobile. What is it with people at gigs, these days? Why do they bother coming? Why not just go to a karaoke bar or slip a cd on at home? But still, Joan was fantastic I'd forgotten what a great guitar player she is, as well. Even if you don't care for her music on cd (I'm not a huge fan of it) see her live if you get a chance. And her new cd, "Lovers Speak" is actually very, very good. A pleasant surprise was the opening act, Juliet Turner. I have her most recent release, "Burn the Black Suit", which -- as I think i've mentioned previously on the list - is great except for the rather muffled production. Live, her voice is strong and clear (it sounds a bit fey on the cd, I feel) and she's wonderfully human. Apparently she's been getting a lot of play from Radio 2, especially from Terry Wogan. Hip guy, that Wogan. (For the Americans: I'm afraid I have no translation available.) During the interval she was signing copies of her cd's, and I pick up her previous disc, the appallingly titled "Let's Hear it for Pizza" for which I'm charged a staggering #15 (about $22). This, I think, is the most I've ever paid for a cd.but I also got it signed while I was there. Keep an ear out for Juliet Turner --- she's got lots of promise, and she seems like a lovely person. adam k. np - Mull Historical Society/Us nr - I Capture the Castle (all this whimsical eccentricity is making my teeth ache) - ------------------------------------------------ This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk - ----- End forwarded message ----- - ------------------------------------------------ This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 May 2003 07:32:31 EDT From: AzeemAK@aol.com Subject: Scarlet's Walk Well, I finally found a copy of this album going for a fiver, and bloody hell am I impressed! It's still only a first listen, but it sounds up there with her best. Great songs, superb playing, lovely band feel; and her singing is terrific. There's always a feeling when I listen to Tori that her singing *could* descend into self-parody, but miraculously, it never does - that is left to her small army of imitators and wannabes. Compared to The Storm, Delicate Flame of Desire is definitely heavier on the electric guitars and percussion. At the same time, there's a lot more use of vocal harmonies. The end result is a sort of ecto-friendly prog rock. If you liked The Storm, I'd recommend checking it out.
