Lynn ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2003 13:02:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig Gidney Subject: Throwing Muses/ Kristen Hersh Interview in the Advocate Magazine Throwing Musess big gay following Gay is the first thing someone can be to impress me, says musician Kristin Hersh. On top of that, she lives in oh-so-gay Palm Springs, writes about frat boys who sleep together, and has a loyal following of queer fans. Clearly the Throwing Muses founder is the alterna-gay icon. By Mikel Wadewitz An Advocate.com exclusive posted April 21, 2003 At first glance, Kristin Hersh would not appear to be a gay icon. Nevertheless, this diminutive 36-year-old mother of four, who founded the alternative-rock band Throwing Muses as a teenager in Rhode Island in the mid 80s, has attracted quite a large number of gay and lesbian fans. Hersh has been treated as something of a curiosity by much of the mainstream music media since her bands debut album in 1986 on the influential 4AD record label. Critically lauded, the singer nevertheless remains on the fringe. Her struggles with bipolar disorder were widely reported, and her style of songwritingdescribed by her as being visited by songs, or seeing musichas tended to overshadow her basic personality: a smart, talented musician with a wicked sense of humor who creates songs that are simultaneously unsettling and beautiful. Its those qualities I responded to when I first heard the band in the late 80s while still in high school. I quickly became a self-described Throwing Muses geek. But it wasnt until college in the early 90s that I made a gay friend who even knew the band existed. We bonded over an early Muses song titled Vickys Box, which included the lyric He wont ride in cars anymore / It reminds him of blow jobs, that hes a queer. At the time I was flabbergasted, and excited, that any woman would sing such a thing. This many years later, I still cannot think of a single artistgay or straightwho has written anything quite like it. The initial lineup of Throwing Muses included Hersh, drummer David Narcizo, bassist Leslie Langston, who left in 1990, and Hershs well-known stepsister Tanya Donelly, who left in 1991 to form Belly and has since gone on to her own solo career. After Donellys departure, Hersh regrouped the band as a trio with bassist Bernard Georges. Simultaneously, she embarked on a solo career based mostly on her acoustic-guitar compositions. As her solo career took off, however, the band struggled financially, and Hersh dissolved the Muses in 1997. March 4, however, saw the first release from the band in almost seven years, a new CD simply titled Throwing Muses, featuring Hersh, Narcizo, and Georges, but with Donelly contributing backup vocals. Hershs sixth solo album, The Grotto, was released the same day. I recently had the chance to chat with Hersh on the phone from her home in Palm Springs, Calif., where she and husband-manager Billy OConnell moved with their two children last fall, just before she gave birth to her fourth son. (Hershs first son, from another relationship, lives in New England.) Despite her proclamation that shes in baby world at the moment, Hersh is gearing up to do a brief tour with her band before embarking on more solo touring later this yearan endeavor in which the whole family travels together. I was curious about what Hersh would have to say on a number of topics, including her friendship with openly gay musician Bob Mould, if she knew how many of her fans are gay, why some men love Narcizo so much, and whether or not she could explain some of the gay lyrics that pop up in her music. As a fan who has only recently discovered how many other gay people listen to her music, I was surprised to find out just how queer Hersh really is. It had some interesting commentary from friends and musicians she worked with as well as a decent cross-section of her music, with songs played in full. Even with a few minor factual errors, it was a nice little tribute and very enjoyable. It's now online, for anyone interested in listening or recording it. Also a good starting point if you've never checked her out but would like to. Go to: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/folk/playback/index.shtml Once there, click the "Listen Again" link where it says "Missed Mike's Show? Listen to it again on BBC Radio Player." Enjoy!
