I dislike the House of Blues.  I admit I've only been to the one in Cambridge and the one in Hollywood, but man...suckage supremo.

I took my friend Nick to the show because he likes some folk music such as Dar, Ellis Paul, Patty Griffin...I thought that he'd like Patty Larkin and that Julia Fordham's humor would win him over.  And I still have no doubt that he'd love Patty if given a chance.  But the HoB just didn't allow that.

The sound was terrible, the seating uncomfortable, the air conditioning unbearable.  Part of Patty's appeal is her virtuosic guitar work; well that was hidden in the mix...she started the show off with one of her instrumentals and you couldn't hear half the notes.  And too often her vocals were mixed in a muddled mess, fighting elements from her guitar, Marc Shulman's electric, and Ben Wittman's drums.  And when Merrie Amsterburg (yay) came out to accompany on vocals and baritone guitar or mando, you could barely hear her contributions (boo).

I apologized to nick after her set, telling him that he would like Patty a LOT more if he saw her solo in a smaller environment.

Julia was fine, although her voice was also lost a bit in the mix.  She had a full band (drums, bass, guitarist, keys) and was full of amazing energy.  A totally different experience from the show I saw with Jeff W in Boston last summer where it was just her and...another guy (was it her drummer or guitarist?  i can't remember).  That Boston show I liked a lot because it was so stripped down and showcased her voice; her songs took on an earthy, heartfelt soul quality that made me all melty...this full band show was still nice, but the added elements made her soulful music seem a little cheesy.  It wasn't helped by the plethora of elderly white folks with no soul in their bones getting down in the audience (no offense meant to all the white people on this list.  I just, you know, hate white people.  KIDDING!  heh, i'm gonna go hide behind my sister sherlyn now).

Oh, and you know what else stinks about HoB in Hollywood?  Ticketbastard added charges that knocked the price of two tickets up from 50 to 70 dollars, and then they charge $15 for parking.  Ay.

Not the best concert night.  But I'm sure it'll be made up by the Maria McKee show this coming Friday at the Roxy.  Oh yeah baby!  Very much looking forward to that.

And I'm also looking forward to the 11 pm Vienna Teng show at the Mint next wednesday (seems a bit late for a show on a school night) and her show at Borders in Westwood on sunday.

You'll have to excuse Paul - you know he didn't mean it.  What he meant was, he hates *elderly* people.  Not white people.  Old people.
