I wasn't trying to bully anyone, here. I was harkening back to the 60s and early 70s when Dylan was positively inescapable, and if that was objectionable, you put up or didn't listen, not an attractive choice. My comment stemmed from the choice of an artist whose work is almost unnoticeable, and is thus easy to avoid, unlike Dylan or Neil Young or Leon Russell who were seemingly everywhere at some point. Maybe a subset of the "Singers whose voices I don't mind that much but their singing style drives me nuts" [Meth's phrase] discussion is the song or album that can set things in a new light. 'Blind Willie McTell' is the Dylan one that got me - piano, haunting, something that seemed so old. Maybe some people who like piano girls will like that one! But as to his voice, I saw him 3 times this year when he came to New Zealand (my dad needs someone to travel to Dylan concerts with, and my mother isn't willing, being an ex-choir singer). Dylan just chanted/spoke most lines, geting them done in roughly the correct time, beginning and ending with kinda the correct notes, then starting the next line. When he actually sang - extended a note for effect and put some rhythm into it beyond getting-it-done-before-the-end-of-that-bar, it was quite exciting - ooh, he's singing, look at that! If anyone wants a recording of the NZ concerts, just ask. k. The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Peter, Someone asked opinions about whose voices we did not care for. I gave mine. As Meth so objectively pointed out, I didn't bash her voice or question why on earth anyone would want to listen to her. I am mature enough to understand that musical preference is subjective, and that what appeals to one, may set another's teeth on edge. I merely stated an opinion that I claimed to be no one else's but my own. I'm sorry that you felt an artist you felt strongly about was being attacked. I'm sorrier that you felt you needed to attack me for expressing my opinion in response to a poll that was inherently an invitation for negative opinions about a subjective matter. I, for one, found it very interesting to hear about what turned others off, since we routinely hear about what turns others on, musically. Thanks...Lisa Peter C protested: >I delurk to protest someone's negativity about Mary Margaret O'Hara's voice >and delivery last week. And it certainly wasn't carping. Carping would be something along the lines of "Mary Margaret O'Hara sucks, how could anyone possibly listen to her, you all are idiots for liking her". It's just an opinion. Hi, Unbelievably, we've got our 25th house concert coming up this weekend! Live At The House O'Muzak living room concerts in New Haven presents our final performance of the season: RUTHIE FOSTER (with Cyd Cassone) Sunday, April 27 at 4:00 pm $10 suggested donation Ruthie Foster is, simply put, a force of nature. Raised in small-town Texas on a steady diet of the likes of Mahalia Jackson, Sister Rosetta Thorpe, Sarah Vaughn and Etta James, Ruthie sang in her church's gospel choir and obeyed her mother's instructions to "Open your mouth and sing, girl!". After a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy Band and a number of years singing in New York City, Ruthie returned to her hometown, where she met her manager/parter Cyd Cassone (who will accompany her here on vocals and percussion). Ruthie has released 3 CDs so far, a mix of covers of classic gospel and blues, as well as her own original tunes which show the influence of her musical upbringing. Her performances are high-energy affairs that are guaranteed to get your feet stomping on the floor, and her voice will just blow you away. The first time we saw her on stage, as an opening act at the Iron Horse, the town of Northampton had no clue what had just hit it. Imagine how much fun she'll be in our living room! This is going to be an experience you won't soon forget. The suggested donation is $10, and we will have the usual snacks and soft drinks available. Please RSVP by e-mailing meth@smoe.org or calling us at 203-776-9325. Full address and directions will be provided with your reservation confirmation. Ruthie is one of those people who should be a household name, and it's a crime that she's not (yet). We really do hope to see you here this Sunday.
