Hi, Bill (one of them) mentioned: >Speaking of my Yes buddy in Ohio, he sent me an a-capella version of >Yes's "Leave It"; it really, really rocks; have you all heard it? I don't know if this was the case everywhere, but this a cappella version was a minor radio hit in southern Maine when I was in 9th grade or so. It was like the local stations that had been playing the album version of "Leave It" to death finally got hold of this alternate version and all decided they liked that one better. (Ah, the days when top-40 radio was locally programmed.) I agreed with them. :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Ruthie Foster, 4/27 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 2003 22:37:38 -0400 From: "jzitt@metatronpress.com" Subject: Re: Bill's Trivia Question (WAS: RE: Now, whose voice can't youstand?) Yup. I remember it (I think) from the 12" of "Leave It". IIRC, it was made, like the wonderful a cappella mix of the Beatles' "Because", but simply mixing out the instrumental tracks. - -------------------------------------------------------------------- mail2web - Check your email from the web at http://mail2web.com/ . ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 2003 22:36:28 -0400 From: meredith Subject: OTR reference on Angel?! Hi, Does anyone know if Jeffrey Bell, the writer and director of tonight's episode of _Angel_ is an Over The Rhine fan, or at least a friend of the band? During the "open mic" scene, woj and I are both 100% sure that the little boy that was on the podium recited, "Why I Love Jasmine, By Linford Detweiler". Somehow I don't think that name could possibly be a coincidence. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Ruthie Foster, 4/27 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Apr 2003 20:00:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Neb Rodgers Subject: Fwd: Fiona Apple at Work on New Album Haven't heard anything from this lady in awhile. - -Neb - ---Original Message--- Fiona Apple at Work on New Album Wed Apr 16, 5:45 PM ET By Jonathan Cohen http://makeashorterlink.com/?F3FE23D34 NEW YORK (Billboard) - Singer/songwriter Fiona Apple is at work on her third Epic studio album. While a July 22 release date has been circulating online, a spokesperson says it will most likely arrive closer to September. The as-yet-untitled set is being produced by Jon Brion, who was at the helm for the artist's 1999 album "When the Pawn Hits...," which debuted at No. 13 on The Billboard 200 and has sold 862,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Also on board for the new project is drummer Matt Chamberlain, who played on both of Apple's earlier records. In a January posting on his official Web site (http://www.mattchamberlain.com), he wrote that recent sessions at a mansion in the Silver Lake section of Los Angeles were "completely amazing. The mansion ... has been everything from a nunnery to a girls school -- it is now owned by this wonderful lady who has been renting it out to people to record in and to do creative projects in; a very inspiring place to live and work." Apple has kept a low profile since the release of "When the Pawn," although she made a handful of appearances last year at the Brion-organized showcases at Los Angeles' Club Largo. She received a Grammy country nomination this year for her collaboration with Johnny Cash on a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which can be found on Cash's latest American Recordings album "American IV: A Man Comes Around." Sounds like Linkin Park with a female singer. >Christian band, just like Creed by the way. They don't sound Xtian to me. (I wouldn't be listening to them if they were.) I don't detect any references to religion in the music; there's certainly far less of that in there than there is in an OTR album. On the other hand, the main male component of the band, Ben Moody, does thank Jesus first in the liner notes. I can't say that I've heard enough Linkin Park or Creed to recognize similarities between them and any other band, as I don't listen to the radio anymore. Note, however, that the song in question--Bring Me To Life--is IIRC the only one on the album to feature much in the way of a male vocal, or that rappish segue near the end. Otherwise, it's fairly representative of the songs on the CD. So far, I'm liking their effort quite a bit. It's dark and crunchy. Perhaps it won't be for long, but for the moment the CD's been calling me back to it fairly often. The first time I heard The Band, I was taken aback by the roughness of all the guys' voices. I was used to the Beatles and good old American pop (though singers from garage bands have long been a component of pop radio). The tremulousness and lack of confidence in The Band's voices was off-putting. I have matured since then and much prefer the whiny guys with shaky voices to the smooth pop idols. I do, though, save a space in my heart for the Paul McCartney's, Finn Brothers, and Squeezes of the world. After spending a couple of decades listening to country and bluegrass and blues, odd nasal voices are quite acceptable to me. In fact, I may have a thing for nasal voices. I would love to hear a duet with Iris DeMent and Jimmy Dale Gilmore, perhaps backed up by Ian and Sylvia. I'm sure the fact that I have a nasal off-key voice has nothing to do with any of this. Can anyone spare some Nasonex? Bye, Lyle _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam?
