A friend of mine, AJ Roach (www.RoachMusic.com), was opening the show along with Old Crow Medicine Show (www.crowmedicine.com). The Tanyas were also joined on stage by one of their founding members, Jolie Holland (www.JolieHolland.com) who now lives in San Francisco. I've been a fan since of the Tanyas since I happened to catch one of their songs on KPIG (www.kpig.com) webcast and have been waiting anxiously for their arrival at a local venue. No complaints about their live sound - it was close enough to the recordings to be familiar and keep the crowd engaged but different enough to sound "live". Their stage presence wasn't the greatest (lots of down-time between songs.. pet peeve of mine) but it didn't detract from the show too much. A few friends of mine commented that they played too long but I didn't get that feeling, even with a three-act bill. As for their albums, I keep going back and forth on which album I like better. I definitely recommend their first record "Blue Horse" for those who haven't heard them, but their newer "Chinatown" is also well done. - - Jamie neal copperman wrote: >I noticed the Be Good Tanyas have a new CD out. In it were the Jennys disc and Nicky's _Weather Vane_. I can sum up both in one word: beautiful. These are discs not to be missed. The three-part harmony with the Jennys is "goose pimply", especially the acapella song "Bring Me Li'l' Water, Silvy". There are no bad songs on either disc. Both discs are quite awesome. Now to purchase discs from the other two members of The Wailin' Jennys, Carla Luft and Ruth Moody. Below is a copy of the post on the Mad-Mission list that announced this. Mike :-) The post: ************************* Hey Guys, I usually don't encourage anyone to watch MTV, .. Ever.. but, there can be an exception to everything right? They have started a new show called "Advance Warning" that features talented up & coming artists. On April 28th they're featuring a fellow MMer, the very talented Darcie Miner! Whoo hoo!!! The press release follows: ************************************************************ On April 28th, 2003 @ 8pm EST, Darcie Miner of Harrisburg, PA's Darcie Miner Band will appear as a co-host & will perform on MTV's newest addition to their prime time lineup, "Advance Warning." "Advance Warning," which debuted on MTV & MTV2 in March, 2003, is dedicated to bringing mostly unsigned, new artists as well as some artists that've just completed record deals to the forefront of the music industry's & public's attention at an even earlier stage of their careers than ever before in MTV's history. Darcie is the very first artist in the brief history of the show to be selected to co-host an entire segment & is also the first artist who'll perform 'live' on the show. Please note that the show on 4/28/03 in which Darcie appears will rerun several times in prime time on MTV (between 2p-8p, EST) over a period of two weeks after the initial airing & will then be shown on MTV2 several more times after it's run on MTV. Moreover, a song from Darcie's new album will be selected to be on an MTV compilation CD entitled "Advance Warning" that will be available for sale via MTV.com. For more info on the Darcie Miner Band regarding scheduling, shows, photos, etc., you're invited to refer to her website at www. DarcieMinerBand.com. ************************************************************************ For those of you who have heard all the great things about Darcie, but have hesitated to check her out.. here's your chance. For those already in the know.. but too far away to see most of her live shows... Well, here's your chance to be blown away by how amazing she is live! (no pressure here Darc.. ) :-) Rock Out Darcie! These drums are traditionally found in a range from northern Africa to central Asia, and have picked up a number of names on the way. Dumbek is probably onomatopoetic (the drum has two distinct tones -- one low and doomy, one sharp and, um, peckish -- and classical music in this traditional "transcribes" drum parts as a series of spoken syllables. yup, beatboxing is an ancient tradition... as Sheila Chandra are well aware. but i digress.) "Dar" or "Tar" is a root meaning drum, and probably also the source of the Turkish "Zarb", which is a type of wooden darbouka... I should add that woj is not the darbouka player, nor is he the darbouka player's son neither... (wow! in searching for the history of that little non sequitur, i found a wacky digest from days of ecto past. just look for dumbek in the archives. man, my posts make *no* sense ;-) On Sunday, Apr 13, 2003, at 13:11 US/Pacific, William Mazur wrote: > Thanks Meth for the info on Bob's percussion!
