It's great to hear that Vienna is wowing everyone across the country. "Daughter" is one of my favorite Vienna songs as well. It is beautifully poignant and brings up a lot of emotion in me. She said something to the effect that she had thought of playing that but had decided to leave her up in the attic where she doesn't come down from too often. She went on to tell the story of how the song was written for her Dad and the love they both shared. Of course she then played a very beautiful version of the song, I literally had tears in my eyes. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Apr 2003 02:01:56 -0700 From: "William Mazur" Subject: RE: very cool indie story Fortunately, we are in the positive cycle again where artists are finding alternative ways to get their music heard. The big boys get bigger, consolidate, gobble up smaller labels and are driven strictly by profits and obligations to shareholders. When that happens the underground and alternative scene starts to blossom and flourish again. It's seems to happen about every decade. The pendulum swings and yin has its yang. The same thing happens in other areas of business as well. We are in that same transition period in the hi-tech arena. The big boys get too big through acquisition and start to atrophy. Then all of the little innovative start-ups begin to crop up again. Eventually some will grow large, some will fall by the wayside and some will get acquired by the big boys. The cycle starts over again. We are lucky, as Bill says, that the artists we like find a way to be heard. Word of mouth by groups of people who appreciate music, such as all of us here on Ecto, really helps the independent artist. We are looking for the options to mass produced and disposable pop artists. There's a lot more of us out there than one might expect. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Bill Adler Sent: Friday, April 11, 2003 6:57 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: RE: very cool indie story If the major record companies stopped producing albums tomorrow, we'd be left with Vienna Teng, October Project, Terami Hirsch, Emm Gryner, Lori Lieberman, Happy Rhodes, etc., etc. The world would get along just fine. It might entail some rapid scrambling on the parts of some of our favorites (Tori, KaTe [well, a boy can hope], etc.), but I'm sure Aimee and Natalie could provide a quick tutorial on the joys of self-publishing. As for Michael's and my (nearly) simultaneous posting of the same URL, interesting ectophilic synchronicity, no? For my part, I'll plead ignorance -- I'm on the digest. :) John ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2003 02:50:58 -0700 From: Phillip Hudson Subject: RE: very cool indie story If the major record companies stopped producing albums tomorrow, we'd be left with Vienna Teng, October Project, Terami Hirsch, Emm Gryner, Lori Lieberman, Happy Rhodes, etc., etc. The world would get along just fine. Phil If all the record executives in Hollywood were laid end-to-end... ..they would all be far too busy to bother us any more. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Apr 2003 19:53:26 -0500 From: "Matthew Bittner" Subject: Re: Interesting article about the music business (and indies) On Fri, 11 Apr 2003 21:23:46 -0400, Michael Curry wrote: >http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0411/p13s02-almp.html > >Random paragraph: > >"While executives at those labels wail about the industry's imminent collapse, indie labels and artists are singing a much happier tune. Profits are up - in some cases by 50 to 100 percent. That's in contrast to overall album sales, which dropped about 11 percent in 2002." Very interesting, which follows my thinking lately. Lately, when purchasing CDs from artists, I prefer to go direct. Direct to the artist, that is. Sure, it will take longer because you're not dealing with credit cards, and when dealing with checks they'll wait for them to clear. However, I know the money is going directly to the artist. Sure, there will be arguments for and against, but this is the way I'm making sure my favorite artists are able to do what we want them to do. Just my deflated US$.02. ;-) Matt Bittner ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Apr 2003 02:07:03 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: [none] Hola, If you want to hear an interview with Ruthie Foster, go to right now, 9 PM Central, to: http://www.kera.org/radio/ Pick streaming audio.
