If you haven't heard it, it's a killer folk/pop album. The title track is about as catchy a pop song as I heard last year, while Surrender Dorothy is poignant and sensitive. Plus, we got to host Lynn Miles on her first ever visit to New Mexico, where she turned out to be a completely hilarious and engaging performer. This was no pushover of a category either. Lynn beat out Kathleen Edwards album, which I would have thought was a sure winner based on it's reception Stateside. And also Kim Barlow, a quirky and imaginative artist from the Yukon. Her album Gingerbread puts me in mind a little bit of old Jane Siberry. Plus, she got to work with Veda when Veda was in the Yukon for the Field Study trip. So Veda and Ford appear on the album. I highly recommend both of Kim's albums too. neal np: The View From Here - Suzanne Buirgy (a touch of Melissa Etheridge grit but with the ability to be softer and gentler too. The track "Lullabye" is overwhelming as the story of a woman looking back on the child she didn't have, who would be ten at this point in time. Suzanne plays guitar and piano, and this is a very self-assured and powerful album. [And yeah, she's doing a house concert with us in May.]) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Apr 2003 03:00:03 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ************************ Heidi Heller (ho@his.com) ************************ *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Heidi Heller Mon April 08 1974 Aries Jill Hughes Sat April 09 1955 Aries Klaus Kluge Sun April 10 1960 Unicorn Steve VanDevender Sun April 10 1966 Racer Art Liestman Fri April 10 1953 Repeat Stephen Golden Sat April 10 1971 Jokey Michael Bowman Wed April 11 1962 Aries Wolfgang Ullwer Fri April 11 1969 Widder Janet Kirsch Thu April 11 1974 Aries Jerry Tue April 13 1971 Aries Stuart Myerburg Mon April 14 1969 Aries T-Bone Wed April 15 1992 happy cat Jeff Hanson Sat April 16 1966 Aries Michael Klouda Mon April 17 1967 Aries Harry Foster Sat April 21 1956 NiceGuy Kjetil Torgrim Homme Thu April 23 1970 Taurus Jeff Burka Thu April 24 1969 GoFlyAKite Christine Waite Tue April 25 1972 Taurus Matt Adams Thu April 26 1962 Taurus Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign? You did such an excellent job. Thanks! Based on what I see in the photos, I have a few questions and comments. Most of them are serious and some will be me just being silly. If you are wondering what I am doing up so late, I just got back a little while ago from seeing Duncan Sheik at the Fillmore in SF. It was an awesome show. Question #1 - For Meth and Woj - Who is in the photo on the wall behind the CDs. It looks like Kate Bush but I can't make it out for sure? Question #2 - I see that Happy's guitar was plugged into some sort of amplification (judging from the cable connected to the guitar). Did she use any effects (such as chorus and DDL echo) on her guitar ala her guitar sound on The Keep? My assumption is yes. Question #3 - For the guitarists in the audience (both at the house concert and generally here on Ecto). How many of Jeff's pictures show Happy playing a specific chord? Bonus points for naming all of the chords shown. BTW, I haven't counted them all myself. Jeff just took a lot of great photos! Some of them clearly show the chord Happy is playing. Now the big bonus points come in for matching the chord with the Happy song being played at the time. ;-) Question #4 - Who was video taping the show? Can we talk off-line? I may have an interesting trade to offer. Assuming that would be considered kosher. Question #5 - Are Vickie and Chris shown in any of the photos? Vickie was the person that first welcomed me to Ecto. I have never seen or met her or Chris yet. Comment #1 - In seeing Bob's percussion set-up in the photos, it appears that he was using an Egyptian metal doumbek. Besides a small Sabian cymbal and a few triangles, I also see some Tibetan cymbal bells (I think that's what they are called). Thanks in advance for helping to answer any of my questions. Good night. :-) Bill M. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Jeff Wasilko Sent: Monday, April 07, 2003 10:38 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: Photos from Happy's houseconcert ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Apr 2003 02:51:16 -0700 (PDT) From: anna maria "stjärnell" Subject: pre happy ecto Re: pre-happy ecto Pre-happy ecto..well,kinda..Danielle Dax was a contemporary who made wild,out- there music..kind of Kate Bush meets Marc Bolan and Nina Hagen. Everyone, I hope you don't mind, but I want to pursue this one a little further. I am just very curious about Happy's set-up to get her sound across in the house concert environment. Obviously, the big draw is her singing and her incredible voice. Thanks for the info on her vocal set-up. There was a cable coming from her Ovation guitar in one picture. So based on what you are saying, Happy probably plugged the guitar straight into the P.A. for some minor sound re-enforcement. Effects such as chorus or DDL on her guitar which would make it sound more watery and ethereal. Did it sound like straight acoustic guitar or did it have the other quality I am describing? That effected acoustic guitar sound is what she used on The Keep. I also noticed in one picture that Bob has a small localized microphone attached to his doumbek. Yes, I think so. He also had a pair of shell anklets on that made a really cool sound when he tapped his feet, and a couple different kinds of shakers. One of the new songs that Happy did at EFW was a poignant and bittersweet song entitled "The Lucky One" (I believe that is the correct title). It was very beautiful musically and melodically ala Tivoli. The lyrics are about how her life went in a different direction than most women. It describes how she kind of longed for the wedding dress, the house with the picket fence, etc. like some of her friends, "the lucky ones". The lyric said something about that she would never be one of the "lucky ones". I've only had a chance to listen to it once though, and it didn't jump out at me the way their first one, last year's Blue Horse did. But that's a rough first impression. I do highly, higly recommend Blue Horse for any people who love contemporary or traditional folk/Americana. It was great! The longer version is that my friend Jennifer and I braved the early April ice storm (which actually didn't get going 'til late) to drive from Connecticut to Providence, as we'd been out of town the previous weekend and hadn't been able to catch her shows at woj-n-meth's, and we didn't want to entirely miss Vienna's trip to this coast. Anyway, AS220 is a bit of a dive, at least by some standards, but it's a pretty good venue, and I'd been there once before to see Kristeen Young. As we'd hoped, Vienna was on first, and her set was great. She didn't do any of the new songs that she'd performed during the house concert at Jeff's house last year, but it was still wonderful to hear some of our favorites from _Waking Hour_. If I had any complaint, it would be that the set was too short, but I think I'd probably still be saying that if she'd played for two hours. *wry smile* Oh, and there were a few people at the show who would have been good reasons for bringing Very Sharp Things (tm) along, but I've almost come to expect that at every show I go to (house concerts excepted). Despite the weather, it was well worth the trip, and I'm very much looking forward to Vienna's next trip east. Marc and I just got back from seeing Vienna at Iota (well, okay, actually I walked the dog first...we're not *just* back). The set list, in order was: Gravity The Tower Homecoming Eric's Song Between Say Uncle The Boy at the Piano Shasta Decade and One Enough to Go By Lullaby for a Stormy Night Soon Love Soon Unwritten Letter #1 Encore: Momentum Now why couldn't at least *one* of y'all who made it to the House o' Muzak on Sunday manage it?! The show tonight was, as expected, fantastic. Vienna is a great performer, and a great entertainer. She chatted with the audience and introduced pretty much every song with a story about its background. There were three unreleased songs, all of which were quite good. "The Boy at the Piano," particularly stood out for me. Very jazzy with cute lyrics. Reminded me of Jewel's "A Very Big Girl" in some ways. Lots of fun. "Shasta" was an interesting song, surprisngly playful in its music, about a woman trying to decide if she should have an abortion. "Soon Love Soon" was something of a highlight, with Vienna coaxing the rather large crowd (Iota was packed) into singing the "soon love soon" and "and we will be as one god, and we will be as one people" parts while she sang the rest. I was particularly impressed with Vienna's piano playing. It was a lot of fun to watch her hands spidering across the keyboard. So I'll join in the chorus and tell people not to miss the chance to see her! jeff ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #97 *************************
