I understand she was listed in a CCM magazine article on 19 indie artists to watch out for, and with good reason. I've heard her described as a cross between Ani DiFranco and Jewel, she lists Ani and Tori as influences. While she's technically a Christian artist, you don't hear a lot of overt references to this in her lyrics, so her music is accessible to just about everyone. Her website has mp3s and lyrics from her CD, I'd be interested in hearing what others here think. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Apr 2003 16:51:44 -0400 From: "dave" Subject: doh forgot something.. www.miakimonline.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Apr 2003 22:48:07 -0400 From: "Foghorn J. Fornorn" Subject: Happy live A few words on today's House O'Muzak living room concert: most excellent. Pretty much a capacity crowd, and it all went off without a hitch. Happy played acoustic guitar and was accompanied by Bob Muller on percussion. You can hear Bob's work on albums by Trey Gunn's band (Trey being an occasional member of King Crimson). (I confess I did not know/remember that until Happy told me after the show). The set list was all over her ouevre, early and more recent, with two or three upcoming album tunes, and a cover. Since I'm so bad at remembering song titles I'll leave it to others to recount that part of it. Happy was in fine form, both voice and guitar playing. In chatting post-show she talked about how difficult it is to play guitar now without having any feeling in one finger of her left hand. I certainly couldn't tell it from her playing today. Bob's percussion was excellent accompaniment. Varied (a bongo, tabla (I think), small cymbal, several sorts of bells, shaker, etc) but never dominating. I have to go back and listen to those Trey Gunn albums again. I've made a few pics available: http://home.earthlink.net/~foghornj/Pub/HR20030406.html PS: She said her hands were cold so someone lent her a glove which you'll see on her right hand. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Apr 2003 00:31:53 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Happy live Hi, Fog posted: >A few words on today's House O'Muzak living room concert: most excellent. Nice photos, Mike!! I'm still in too much of a post-show haze to make much sense out of what happened today, so any real details will have to wait. I will say that I'm thanking all the gods that I already had everything pretty much set up when it finally hit me that HAPPY WAS GOING TO BE PLAYING IN MY LIVING ROOM (credit Don Keller for casually mentioning to me in the kitchen as Happy was starting her sound check, "Happy Rhodes is playing the guitar in your living room, you realize"). I wasn't good for much after that. :) She played for just under 80 minutes, and it was way too short. She was in fine form, both vocally and banter-wise, and her guitar playing appeared totally unaffected by any injury. Her new songs are beautiful, and it was wonderful to hear the older stuff again. It was also great to see all the ectophiles in attendance ... thanks again to everyone for coming! Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to really talk to everyone as much as I would've liked, and as I sit here I realize that I didn't even say a proper goodbye to many of you as you left. Please don't think this was in any way intended to be a slight -- but the host can only be in so many places simultaneously. :} It was particularly great to see Vickie and Chris again (yes, they flew in from Chicago, yay!). Having Vickie there just made the event complete, somehow -- this is, after all, All Her Fault when you get right down to it. :) I wish we'd had more time to hang out, but we did have a lovely evening. >Happy was in fine form, both voice and guitar playing. In chatting post-show >she talked about how difficult it is to play guitar now without having any >feeling in one finger of her left hand. I certainly couldn't tell it from >her playing today. I couldn't either. I did notice that she would look at her left hand off and on, but I don't know if that was any more than she used to do. As I mentioned above, her guitar playing sounded as good as ever. >Bob's percussion was excellent accompaniment. Varied (a bongo, tabla (I >think), ... or was that a dumbek? I agree that it was excellent accompaniment. I had a good time watching him. >PS: She said her hands were cold so someone lent her a glove which you'll >see on her right hand. That someone being Noe Venable, whom we hope to lure back from Oakland to do a show of her own sometime. :) She and her friend Reba Hasko (another Bay Area musician/ectophile) won the award for Most Miles Traveled To See This Show, beating out Vickie and Chris (Chicago), Jeff and Eric (Boston) and the folks who came up from various parts of New Jersey. And believe it or not, there were plenty of people from Connecticut in attendance, too!! The good news is, from all accounts Happy enjoyed her first house concert experience and is looking forward to doing it again. I'm sure the progress of the building of the Happy Across America tour will be well documented here in the coming months. :) And now, it is time to collapse ... P.S. If anyone wants to do this again, we've got Sloan Wainwright coming next Sunday! Just drop me a line. :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Sloan Wainwright, 4/13 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Apr 2003 15:05:53 +1000 From: "Anthony Horan" Subject: Re: LUSH, COCTEAU TWINS and LIZ PHAIR > SPLIT was a great return to form Easily my favourite Lush album - the one where, I think, they finally "got it right". There are also three or four tracks that were recorded for "Split" that didn't make it to the album; all but one of them surfaced as single b-sides (and if I recall correctly, that one surfaced on a 4AD sampler - "All Virgos Are Mad", I think) "Split" is, by the way, still one of the most insanely loudly-mastered CDs I've ever come across. Mind those speakers :) I have an article generated from an interview I did with Miki from the "Lovelife" era lurking around here somewhere, and can dig it out if anyone would like to see it. > I would like it, but I always forget to check it out. Does anyone know what > LIZ FRASER is up to lately? I thought she was working on a solo album, but I > haven't heard anything about it lately. Well, for one thing, she can be heard clearly during both currently released "Lord of the Rings" movies, doing vocals on the msuic score (and is of course on the respective soundtrack albums). But the last I heard of her doing studio work was news that she was working with Massive Attack again, doing vocals on at least one track for what became "100th Window". If she did, the song or songs didn't make it onto the album. The Cocteau Twins catalogue was supposed to be getting remastered (by Robin Guthrie) and re-released last year by 4AD, but to be honest, after the near-unlistenable botch-up of a "remastering" job that Guthrie did on the recent compilation, I just figured I'll stick with my original release CDs :) - - Anthony ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #95 *************************
