At some point in the mid-to-late 80's I was introduced to Sandy Denny's lovely voice and lyrical ability, and snatched up whatever I could manage to find of her material, on CD or vinyl. She was a unique and wondrous talent. (And for those who may not be aware, there's another interesting ecto-ish connection: Sandy -- and several others -- are posthumously name-checked in Kate's song "Blow Away" from _Never for Ever_.) I would also be remiss if I didn't mention Pentangle in this discussion. I love Jacqui McShee's beautiful, crystalline voice as well, and between them, Fairport and Pentangle virtually defined British folk-rock in the late 60's. With the likes of Bert Jansch, John Renbourn and Danny Thompson in the lineup, it seems hardly surprising. Definitely worth checking out, if you're unfamiliar with either of these bands/artists. What's going to be on the second disc? <<<<< the second disc will apparently be the tracks recorded at the same session which didnt make it onto the first disc. also the entire album will be redone at the correct speed to get rid of that betty boop type edge to her voice. the other one which she has redone, deep natural, which is largely a remake of good news, is pretty much a win/lose album. its totally different, more ecto in that it uses a lot of dub type sounds, but the low point is that michelle tries to be too emotional in her singing, and it winds up sounding forced in a lot of places. a good album tho, once you get used to that, and the companion "dub natural" disc is great. highlights are the inclusion of "thats so amazing" "peachfuzz" and the absolutely unbelievably beautiful "if not here" also - if anyone is interested, i can hook them up with michelle live recordings. >>>>>Also, any good ecto recommendations from South Africa? I asked that of the previous people who had joined, but they couldn't come up with anything. south african music is pretty much going through an all out renaissance over the last couple of years and bands are springing up so fast its hard to keep track. heres a link to a free mp3 site which has a good mix of musicians: http://www.samp3.com/ and to buy: http://www.oneworld.co.za/ bands/artists i would recomend are robin auld (fairly standard folk/rock), .brian finch (folk rock), baxtop (blues rock), syd kitchen (folk), roger lucey (one of my favourites - very highly recomended!!!! ), tananas (world class jazz band!!!), aquarian quartet (four great guitarists), jimmy dludlu (jazz guitar), vusi mahlasela (jazz guitar), 14 shabalala (think woody guthrie born in africa - brilliant!!!), landscape prayers, and neill solomon. and "hi" to mark from jhb & azeem in london (from jmdl) ron np - joni - woodstock ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2003 06:38:09 -0800 (PST) From: Neb Rodgers Subject: Fwd: New David Sylvian CD? Oh yes, Gala, and Spooky, those were the ones > I used to have on tape. Tapes wore out. AHHH....LUSH. I love them. I was very upset to hear about the suicide of their drummer CHRIS. And then they broke up. I can't say I can blame them, but it was rather sad. Recently 4AD released a best of LUSH CD, so that may be worth tracking down, though often used to see their albums in the bargain bins. I don't have the best of, as I have most of their other stuff (though I am missing some eps and bsides). I do really loved GALA which is just a compilation of their first three eps that they released plus a couple of bonus tracks. SPOOKY was a little too bland for me as the entire album sounded pretty similar (I want to blame it on ROBIN GUTHRIE of COCTEAU TWINS/VIOLET INDIANA but I think the group was just in a a rather stale space and didn't know how to make a proper album, as they were just used to making eps up to that point). SPLIT was a great return to form, and even though a lot of LUSH fanatics hated it, I really like LOVELIFE. It pure pop (ala HEAVENLY/MARINE RESEARCH) but I still think it's great. Does anyone know what MIKI is up to? I know she said that she wanted to pursue a "civilian job" and not do any more music, but I thought maybe she changed her mind. She surfaced on the RENTALS second album (7 MORE MINUTES) which wasn't all that great an album, and she did some stuff with whathisface from KITCHEN'S OF DISTINCTION on their side project FRUIT but alas, I haven't heard anything from her since. EMMA is in a great new band called SING-SING. I would recommend it to everyone who is a LUSH fan. Worth checking out. It's just EMMA and a singer named LISA O'NEILL. Their first single FEELS LIKE SUMMER was very breezy 60's girl group sounding. Their album THE JOY OF SING-SING sounds a lot more LUSH sounding, but with a lot more keyboards and rhythms and less crunchy guitar. Hmmm. Okay maybe it doesn't sound like LUSH when I write it out, but trust me, you be able to relate the two even though they have different singers and different instruments. Maybe it's the song structuring or something I dunno. I think PHIL was touring with THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN, but I haven't a clue what he is up either lately. That was awhile ago. On a side note, lately I have been listening to a lot of later day COCTEAU TWINS (post BLUE BELLS KNOLLS) and I still haven't picked up anything by VIOLET INDIANA. Hmmm. Since I know I like CT and I like MONO I'm pretty sure I would like it, but I always forget to check it out. Does anyone know what LIZ FRASER is up to lately? I thought she was working on a solo album, but I haven't heard anything about it lately. And on a completely different side note LIZ PHAIR (not to be confused with LIZ FRASER) finally is going to release her latest album entitled LIZ PHAIR. It out JUNE 24th. I have trepidations because she's working producers like THE MATRIX (whoo hoo, the people responsible for launching AVRIL LAVIGNE) but I'll still be in line to buy it first thing. That is, unless I can find it online first. Then I'll just wait to buy it used.... Heh. I thought the sound was really muddy and it's probably the least listened to Michelle Shocked album I own. "Dub Natural" is spotty, but it's definitely nice to have versions of some of those songs, which are excellent. I was actually surprised at all the newer songs that are missing. As is typical of a lot of sprawling double album sets, you can make a decent single album from the best stuff. neal ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2003 15:36:20 -0500 From: "Bill Adler" Subject: RE: Pre-Happy Ecto Wow. Well, Texas would make a very nice nation. Ron from Pretoria mentioned that he was a fan of Phil Keaggy and Second Chapter of Acts. Good to have another Christian music fan on the list (though my interest is a bit dormant). Neile has come under the influence too. I saw Second Chapter twice in the 70's and 80's. Their harmonizing was wonderful and Matthew had (has?) a voice strong enough to peel paint off a wall. The first time I saw them, they had Barry McGuire in tow. I saw Barry at a church in north Texas just last year (or year before) singing with Michael Talbot (or was it Terry?). The Talbot brothers were the core of Mason Profitt. Phil Keaggy has long been my favorite guitarist, though I prefer his electric work to the acoustic. I have been buying up Paul Clark albums in Goodwill stores lately just to get the Phil Keaggy leadwork on record. Of course I like Paul Clark, too. I haven't kept up with Christian music in the 90's and oughts, though I did see Jars of Clay open for Sting within living memory. I get most of my Christian content nowadays from classical, bluegrass, and from performing hymns. (If anyone wants to hear some hair-raising music [think Ralph Stanley singing _O Death_], listen to Sacred Harp singing sessions on the internet.) Bye, bye, Lyle np.
