Although, I believe that a few people around here have heard of her already. ;-) OK, all silliness aside, the rest of my recommendations, for the most part, will already be known around here on Ecto as well. They will primarily be from the prog/art/folk rock genres. 1) Sandy Denny (Fotheringay, Fairport Convention, Solo work) - She is one of my all time favorite singers, either male or female. She IS the godmother of modern English folk. Her clear beautiful voice and honest, heartfelt delivery are what endures her to me. She does have a listing in The Guide and is probably the most well known of my suggestions. Liege and Lief from Fairport Convention is #28 on my top 100 CDS of all time. The incomparable Richard Thompson was the guitarist in that band. 2) Sonja Kristina from the English band Curved Air. Sonja has a beautiful soaring lilt to her voice. I am trying to think of whom I would compare her. I can't come up with anyone. Curved Air had a fantastic violin player, Darryl Way. They were more of a song oriented art rock type of band. They reminded me of It's a Beautiful Day. IMO their best CD is Phantasmagoria. You can hear clips from this CD at Amazon. Try "Marie Antoinette" and "Melinda (More or Less)". My favorite song from them is "Metamorphosis" from their album Air Cut. Unfortunately Air Cut is extremely rare and has not been released on CD. I never owned the album. My brother found me a copy of the song from somewhere on the Internet. Eddie Jobson played on that album. Also, I believe that the future Policeman, Stewart Copeland, was in the band at that point as well. If not, he definitely was a member of the band on their later releases. I remember seeing Sting and Stewart being interviewed on MTV in the early 80s. Sting said that before joining the Police that Stewart "was in some hippy band called The Curved Airs". 3) Annie Haslam from the English band Renaissance. Annie is also pretty well known around these parts. Annie has a beautiful, clear soprano voice. She has a dramatic and emotional delivery. Renaissance played classical influenced prog rock ala Yes or Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Their music was a bit more romantic in their musical compositions. This was also because of the lyrics and Annie's voice. My two favorite CDs from them are Scheherazade and Other Stories and Turn of the Cards (which contains the powerful "Mother Russia"). 4) Sally Oldfield. Sally is Mike Oldfield's sister (Mike Oldfield of Tubular Bells fame). The CD that I have of hers is Water Bearer. Sally's voice is similar to Annie Haslam's but without the power. She also has a bit of a quirky quality to her voice, because of her vibrato, which I actually really like. The music is a little in the vein of her brother's work which is rock and classical instruments doing a mix of English folk and prog. Much of the lyrical content of the CD is based on Lord of the Rings and the Silmarillion. All the best! It's got ferociously crunchy up-tempo rockers; it's got a couple of long, slow, dreamy numbers; it's bookended with two really fine *songs*, the beautifully poignant Light From A Dead Star and When I Die; it has some gorgeous - and artistically justified - string arrangements, among the best on any pop record from the last decade; and it sounds fantastic at high volume. I believe that you may be the first person to join Ecto from South Africa. You probably have already checked out Happy's web site. If not, here is the URL: http://www.auntiesocialmusic.com As a frame of reference, my description of Happy, and I am not alone in this one, would be to imagine Annie Lennox and Kate Bush singing a duet over music composed by Peter Gabriel. Happy has a fantastic four octave range. She can effortlessly access her full range in a live performance. She is a force of nature. Her compositions are intricate, subtle and intelligent. Her lyrics are poignant and beautiful. Yes, we tend to gush when talking about her music. In fact, she is a goddess to the Ectophile community. My suggestion would be to pick up Rhodesongs to start your Happy education. It is a nice compilation of her earlier work. Then you will probably want to pick up her whole catalogue. Once you get started, you won't want to stop until you have everything she has done. My two favorite Happy CDs are The Keep and Many Worlds are Born Tonight. The Keep is a collection of Happy's songs done in a very intimate "unplugged" type of fashion. It really showcases her incredible voice. MWABT is her last studio release and my introduction to her music. The arrangements are beautiful and intricate. To me, MWABT best showcases Happy's complete capabilities as a songwriter, lyricist, amazing singer, arranger and producer. Many people on the list are very partial to her CD Warpaint. Warpaint was released in the early 90s. That was when the early Ectophiles first formed and/or joined Ecto. So they all have fond memories of that CD. Here's to many Happy discoveries for you! Both evenings were powerfully emotional for us as we came together around the joyous beginnings of spring and the dark beginnings of war. In the midst of such world circumstances, it was comforting and life affirming to see the loving faces of people who are so connected to us and to each other through the healing power of music. We look forward to recording that this year and to making some appearances on the East Coast. In fact, we have just booked a concert in Philadelphia at the Tin Angel on Friday, May 23rd. We look forward to seeing many of you there. Be sure to reserve your seats early. Details are available on the calendar page of our website. Please stay in touch with us! Many of you have been extremely helpful in your suggestions, support and ideas. And, if you were wondering, YES! spreading the word really does help! Please encourage your friends to sign up at the website for updates and downloads and maybe even to purchase the CD! We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon. Hope you like the new music. Peace, OP Marina, Emil and Julie October Project http://www.octoberproject.net ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #93 *************************
