I've since acquired Thrill, which is also excellent. I only came across her as a result of hearing Wishbone being played on the in-store sound system at the local Tower a few years ago. I promptly went and grabbed a copy, which was exceedingly difficult to pry out of my car player for a few months afterwards. I hadn't dug this CD out for a while now, so this was a very appreciated memory jog. And any chance to see her live should definitely not be missed. Then Neal mentioned in passing: > She'll be in Portland tomorrow if anyone up there cares. Hey, I resemble that remark. :) Danged if I didn't almost miss her -- thanks for the heads-up. Turned out it was Lori Lieberman's comback album from the '80s, _A Thousand Dreams_. I borrowed the disc to listen to at work on Monday, a couple of days before this subject came up. The thing I find most amusing about "Killing Me Softly" is that everyone goes on about how its her most widely known song, the most famous thing she's composed, etc., etc. Which makes it really odd that in the liner notes to _A Thousand Dreams_, which contained a re-recording of the song, Lieberman is credited for neither the music nor the lyrics! As near as I can determine through web research, she originally wrote the piece as a poem after seeing Don McLean in concert -- so it's not clear why she doesn't have a songwriting credit! jeff n.p. _Reveal_, REM n.r. _Pattern Recognition_, William Gibson ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2003 13:18:36 -0800 From: "Phillip Hudson" Subject: RE: Pre-Happy Ecto pre-Happy musicians they can reveal? - --Bill A lot of Ectos will doubtless have heard or heard of, Judie Tzuke, whose album, "Welcome to the Cruise" was one of my major favorites back in the early 80s. "Stay with Me Till Dawn" is the only thing that I've ever seen the on Web, from that album. It's a nice song, but goes nowhere near conveying the diversity and power of the other songs in the set. The incredible array of musicians backing her on "Cruise" almost make it an historic document in itself :) The title track alone is worth the price of admission. Incidentally, for UK fans, Judie will be playing in Milton Keynes this Monday, April 7; found this on her website: Go see her Phil "Judie is appearing for one night only as a guest of Bob Harris at 'The Stables' - Milton Keynes on the 7th of April 2003. Box office Num. - 01908 280800 http://www.stables.org/ She will be interviewed by Bob and will perform two or three songs acoustically. There will be 3 or 4 other guests" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 04 Apr 2003 03:36:08 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Judee Sill Hi, Judee Sill is great. Nice warm alto voice. A marriage of Bach, the Beachboys, and a folkie sensibility. She was produced by Henry Lewy, who also produced Joni Mitchell, Todd Rundgren, and Jimmy Spheeris. I got Judee's two albums/CDs by going to GEMM and ordering them from a Japanese company. They are expensive but worth it. Thirty bucks apiece, I think. It's hard to come to grips with her life as she seems to have been a pathological liar, which can come in handy if you are a songwriter. Back when I first heard her she was claiming to be a witch who had found Jesus. She does use Christian symbolism and does seem to know something about the dark side (no offense to any resident dark siders--I know, whether it is dark or light depends on your perspective). Speaking of Dar Williams, I was in Barnes and Noble the other day and heard "Whispering Pines" from her new album. She shows good taste, singing a beautiful old Band tune (though I wasn't enthused by the male backup singer). While there I picked up ten or so cds from the Concorde label for $4 bucks a piece, including a Susannah McCorkle cd. You may be able to find the same deal at other Barnes and Nobels. Speaking of Jimmy Spheeris, I have picked up several of his CDs which have been remaindered. Some of the cds are uneven, but they are still full of nice hippy/dippy songs. Speaking of Joni Mitchell, I hope you all got a chance to see the American Masters presentation of a documentary on Joni (on PBS). It is tough seeing her get old, when you think of her as a perpetual twenty-year-old. What a great woman. Great songs, great musical development throughout her life. It was good to see her pounding on a mountain dulcimer. Maybe windmilling on a Les Paul will be supplanted by thumping and pumping on a dulcimer. I'm sure there are some other topics I should touch on, but won't. Bye, Lyle nr. Shirley Jackson _The Sundial_ np. If there ever was a male musician who fit squarely into the Ecto camp, it's Jimmie Spheeris. Spheeris' album, Isle of View, has one of the best album covers of all time. (Available for viewing at http://www.jimmiespheeris.com/iov/isle.htm.) It's true that you can't judge an album by its cover, but in this case both the cover and album are terrific. The other two Spheeris CDs I'd recommend are The Dragon is Dancing and The Original Tap Dancing Kid. Like Judee Sill, Jimmie Spheeris died young -- he was killed in 1984 when a van driven by a drunk driver crashed into Spheeris' motorcycle. For anyone who has a hard time tracking down LPs, one service that can find a lot of out-of-print music is CDBBQ, http://www.cdbbq.com/. CDBBQ will also convert your vinyl to CDs. (The only convert albums you physically own, to stay within copyright law.) I've used them before and they do a flawless job of transferring music to CD. I just checked and CDBBQ has Judee Sill, Jimmie Spheeris and Lori Lieberman albums in its online catalog. - --Bill n.p.
