So in addition to my drooling over the prospect of a Mary Fahl show at the beginning of April, I find out that mid-April brings a spectacular dual bill at the House of Blues in Hollywood of Patty Larkin and Julia Fordham. Be still my heart (ticketbastard charged me $70 for two tickets. TWO!). And then late April of course brings Maria McKee with two dates at the Roxy. Not a bad month for concerts. May will kick off with the Throwing Muses + Tanya Donelly, Erasure's gonna be coming around, and Peter Gabriel in June...I'm so po'. According to all of the official sites (US and Canadian), with updates since the war started, and associated news articles from papers in Buffalo and Detroit (where I'll be crossing next week) over the past few days, you still just need the driver's license (or other government issued photo ID) and birth certificate if you're a US citizen. So, I don't know what the heck happened to the Nields. Has anyone here on ecto crossed the border recently, and can report on their own experience? Most recently crossed about 3 weeks ago. You need picture id and proof of citizenship. Obviously a passport is the best thing possible. Failing that, a birth certificate and driver's license with photo should suffice. Thus the Nields problems make no sense - I suspect they were missing proof of citizenship for one of them. Prior to 9/11 you could usually cross the border by car with a driver's license, though proof of citizenship was still theoretically required. Airline crossings have always required proof of citizenship (though some airlines cut more slack than others). Frankly anyone traveling across any international border these days without a passport is just asking for trouble and/or additional hassle. Cheers, Dave. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-ecto@smoe.org [mailto:owner-ecto@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Michael Curry Sent: Saturday, March 22, 2003 2:19 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: US-Canadian border (Fwd: Veda News) [Sorry if this ends up being a repeat... the first send doesn't appear to have made it out...] At 09:40 PM 3/21/03 -0500, meredith wrote: >Of course, this is all assuming the rules don't change again, suddenly and >without warning. :P (Nerissa and Katryna Nields were unable to cross the >border into Canada this morning, because all of a sudden you need more than >just a driver's license and birth certificate to get in. Recently they have started to present music at the place. Vienna was instrumental in making that happen about a year or so ago. She told us the story during her set. She was playing at a venue next door. She said that the wait staff from The Global Village kept coming over to hear the music next door. When the owner of The Global Village came over to see what was going on, he liked what he heard and asked Vienna to play at his place. I thought it was a cute story. Terami played about a 45 minute set. She was solo this time. Her partner, Kevin, who normally plays with her providing a techno arrangement to the songs, wasnt able to make the trek up from Southern California this time. This gave Terami the opportunity to stretch out a bit more in performance. I really like the elements that Kevin brings to her music. However, Teramis performance last night felt more intimate and fluid. Terami is very charming in her stage presence and between song interactions with the audience. Her explanations of some of her songs brought new light to the meaning of her sometimes cryptic lyrics. She did a very nice set. Vienna played for over an hour and did a mixed set of numbers from her CD along with many new songs. She opened with a powerful rendition of Gravity and then she went into another one of my favorites, The Tower. Toward the end of her set, she did Soon Love Soon and we all sang along throughout the song. It is a beautiful audience participation song. It seemed very appropriate for the times we are living in currently. It is so obvious to me that Vienna has grown immensely over the past six months as a performer. She has a quiet confidence about her. In talking with her before the show, she expressed how very happy she is right now to be out on the road and playing her music. Vienna acknowledged many people last night including the Ectophiles in the crowd. She specifically thanked Amy, who was out here from Minnesota with her husband, and Phil Hudson. Vienna mentioned in conversation with Phil, Billi and me that she is really looking forward to the East Coast tour. She is very excited about doing the house concerts at Meth and Wojs House OMuzak. Billi also asked her what David Letterman whispered in her ear at the end of the performance. She said that she was in a dream the whole time and doesnt remember exactly. She said it was something like Great job. I love your music. All the best!
