I might as well take this opportunity to plug my favorite Portland-based folk/rock singer/songwriter, Ms. Nicole Campbell. http://www.nicolecampbell.com (beware -- here there be Flash...) http://www.cdbaby.com/group/nicolecampbell (samples!) She's also been hinting on her mailing list that the third solo CD is nearing completion, so buy up, people! The only thing you don't get from one of her CD's is her uniquely comic (and, frequently, groan- inducing) between-song patter. But I guess that's one of the perks -- or prices -- of being able to see her perform live... :) John ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Mar 2003 03:00:02 -0500 (EST) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ********************* Geoff Carre (no Email address) ********************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Geoff Carre Sat March 20 1954 Pisces John Stewart Sat March 21 1970 Aries Bob Brown Thu March 22 1951 Ham Valerie Nozick Thu March 25 1971 Aries Tom Proven Sat March 27 1971 Eat at Joe's Jennifer Albert Wed March 30 1966 Aries (w/Cancer rising!:) Warpaint Mon April 01 1991 Brilliant! I checked out some of her samples and CDBaby and MP3.com (http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/274/nicole_campbell.html) based on John's recommendations, and bought both her albums. I've only had a chance to listen to each of them twice, but they were both really good. Guitar-based folk/rock, with country tinges on some songs. It's been a little while, so I can't think of a better description, but I think she's definitely worth checking out. Also on CDBaby, the High Violets were mentioned here a while back. I picked up their disc, 44 down, and really love it. Crunchy guitars with ethereal vocals; reminds me a lot of the Moon Seven Times's first 2 albums. Kaitlyn ni Donovan has a really beautiful voice, but I never managed to get into her solo disc, songs for three days. It just felt too soft; the High Violets' music has more edge. As for Scarlet's Walk, its presence in used bins may be that it's a harder and longer disc to get into than Tori's previous work. I didn't start to like a lot of songs until about the third listen, and it took more listens than that to really appreciate and enjoy it as an album. But it's really good. Worth getting and taking the time to listen to.
