Birdie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 19:06:05 +0000 From: carnivore@att.net Subject: Satellite radio (Sirius & XM) A while back, someone asked about the new satellite radio providers in the U.S., XM and Sirius. I didn't get around to posting my reply at the time and I can't even locate the original post now, but here is some info that may be of interest. I've been an XM Radio subscriber for a while but I'm getting ready to dump it. Their service doesn't offer much in my opinion. Despite their promises of diversity, most of the channels have major-label driven playlists. Indie artists tend to get relegated to a single "Unsigned" channel, which is hard to listen to as it lacks focus. There are no NPR stations, and few eclectic selections among the pop-rock music channels. In short, disappointing. Sirius Radio is a different story. Among it offerings are two eclectic/undergound/indie music channels, a AAA channel, two "alternative" (albeit mainstream alternative) channels, two NPR, one PRI public radio channels, better overall programming on all their stations and unlike XM, no commercials on any of them. If you want to listen to some of the channels, Sirius offers 20-minute time limited samples at www.siriusradio.com. Better yet, you can find a list of direct links with no time limits at http://66.246.14.172/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=5019. Either way you need a broadband connection. Now, if you want it for your car, there is a Friends & Family deal for Sirius that will give you the radio and the required antenna completely free. You need to commit to one year of programming ($140 for 12 months). I think today may be the last day, though (or maybe tomorrow) - it's not publicly advertised and I just found out about it. Details are at http://66.246.14.172/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=5019. Melissa Kaplan (from the now-defunct Splashdown) is working on a new music project called Universal Hall Pass. There isn't very much information on the website, but there is a song to download called "Misdirected". The link is here http://www.universalhallpass.com/sounds.html. Just click on the song title for the download. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 19:58:31 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Satellite radio (Sirius & XM) Hi, Dan mentioned: >Sirius Radio is a different story. IIRC, Sirius is staffed by a whole lot of former non-commercial radio people, which may explain this (or the other way around, I suppose :). I'm not quite ready to commit the $$$ to satellite radio ... the options out there are still too financially unstable for my wallet right now. I don't want to sink money into something that might not be around in a few months. I hope Sirius survives, though. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Vienna Teng, 3/29-30 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2003 20:08:06 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Scarlet's Walk (was Re: Natalie Merchant goes independent) Hi, Andrew Fries posted: >I wish Tori had done the same thing - if "Scarlet's >Walk" came out on her own label, I'm sure it would be a part of my >collection by now. You haven't bought _Scarlet's Walk_ > simply because it's on a major label? That wasn't entirely what I meant. When Scarlet's Walk came out, I put it into the "pool" of potential purchases, along with other releases. Ratings of items in the pool are affected by many factors, for example local artists will often get preference over the overseas ones, and truly independent release will rank *a lot* higher than one from a major. And since I haven't been buying many records, Scarlet's Walk never managed to "float to the top". As an indie release, it probably would. Of course, some artists are exempt from that system. I'll buy Kirsty Stegwazi anytime... then again, since she is both local and independent it doesn't upset my system too much :) Anyhow, Tori no longer gets that sort of preferential treatment, that's all. > The major labels are going to implode under the weight of their own > stupidity regardless. I'm not sure that's the case but even if so, every little bit of assistance is still worthwhile. If we can speed up the process, why shouldn't we? "Anything you can do will be very insignificant.
