FWIW, I felt sort of the same way, but was gradually won over by the later albums. It was a combination of repeated listens and seeing live shows. For me, the later albums have proved to be quite rewarding, but didn't turn out to be as immediately appealing as some of the earlier recordings. neal now editing: Neile Graham interview circa 1994 :) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2003 12:48:32 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Songs in head Hi, Karen posted: >I've been having problems with the Muppet's 'mnah mnah, do do do do do' >song for a couple months now. That's funny ... just last Saturday evening, while walking back to the car after seeing Tori in NYC JeffW, woj and I found ourselves walking up 6th Avenue singing "Mna mna" at the top of our lungs. (Since we were in New York, nobody even gave us a second glance.) And last night, the subject of the song came up again. It is truly one of the most important pieces of music from the late 20th century. >What's stuck in your head? Any ecto songs which are likely to replace an >annoying ditty? Lately I've had a medly of Tori songs (from _Scarlet's Walk_) stuck in my head, usually a mishmosh of random lines from songs glommed together. I find this happens a lot. I won't so much have a song stuck in my head as an artist. Though thank you, right now my earworm is "Mna mna"!!! =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Dorothy Scott, 3/16/03 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2003 18:53:02 +0000 From: "Paul Jensen" Subject: Re: Songs in head meredith: "just last Saturday evening, while walking back to the car after seeing Tori in NYC JeffW, woj and I found ourselves walking up 6th Avenue singing "Mna mna" at the top of our lungs." Hey, I saw Tori that night, too! Pretty amazing concert, wouldn't you say? Drove all the way from Illinois to see her, and it was everything I wanted it to be (twas my first Tori concert).. "Cool On Your Island" was my favorite of the night. :) Paul ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "My needy lungs heaved For a sinking we could share." I was reading the arts section, and was reading about an intriguing exhibit at the Guggenheim called "Matthew Barney: The Cremaster Cycle" It's a crazy mish-mash of mixed media, installation and sculpture. For example, one sculpture is made of beeswax and the front seats of two Ford Mustangs. Anyway, I was surprised to find this passage: "The work is accessible if you're open to it. There are many points of entry. The sheer spectacle. The mixing of elements, clinical, pristine, scatalogical and pornographic. The alternation of brutality and delciacy. The comic self-mocking tone. The recurrent signs and devices, medieval and sexual, like flags, coats of arms, wedges and orifices. The off-key colors. (I'm reminded here of Bruce Nauman's work.) The obsessive fixatoin on detail. (Donald Judd and Roni Horn seem related.) Also the incredible leaps that connect the topography of the singer Patty Griffin's face in 'Cremaster 2' (the best of the five films) to the glaciers of the Candian ice fields - marrying body and landscape, a leitmotif of the cycle." If anyone is interested in going to check it out, it runs through June 11. neal now editing: Steve Earle in Santa Fe ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Mar 2003 18:03:22 -0500 From: "Sherlyn Koo" Subject: Mahna Mahna Hey folks, "Mahna Mahna" is on the excellent "The Muppet Show: The 25th Anniversary Collection: Music, Mayhem, and More!" that came out last year. I still put in my vote for "Rainbow Connection" as one of the best songs ever sung, by a frog or anyone else. Yesterday I decided that I have no chance of my life ever being complete if I don't have a stuffed Kermit toy. Unfortunately there don't seem to be any available for sale new right now, unless I'm just looking in the wrong places. Any advice anyone? BTW the new Dar Williams albums is even better than I was hoping it would be. Whoohooo! Phil Hudson, John Kozak (singer/songwriter from Of the Arcane) and I will be performing at the Geary Theater in San Francisco. Sonnets & Strings ACT's Geary Theater / Fred's Columbia Room 415 Geary Street San Francisco Monday, March 17 @ 7:30pm Information: (415) 637-3154 Suggested Donation: $15 Benefit for The Acting Shakespeare Company The performance will be for two hours or so with music and poetry/sonnet readings. There is a full bar at the venue. Most of you know the style of music that Phil performs. In case you aren't familiar with his style, Woj described his music as British folk/pop. That is probably a pretty accurate description. Phil has very distinctive and beautiful British voice similar in tone and quality to Peter Gabriel or Bryan Ferry. John Kozak and Michael Ames are the songwriting duo that make up Of the Arcane. I started working with John and Michael about a year ago writing new material with them and co-producing their/our music in the recording studio. John has a beautiful, rich and powerful voice. Music from Of the Arcane can be favorably compared to the work of David Sylvian, Nick Drake and Duncan Sheik. I hope that some of you can make it out to see the show. Please come up and say hello if you do. All the best! Bill ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #73 *************************
