Having listened to the new Throwing Muses a few more times, it strikes me as being somewhat a return to their older style. So far I'm not as impressed with it as I was with _University_ or _Limbo_; it's kind of muddy and indistinct by comparison. Not that it is bad, just less immediately catchy. As most Throwing Muses and Kristin Hersh solo albums have been slow-growers for me, I'm willing to give it some more time (for example, Kristin Hersh's _Strange Angels_ seemed a bit underwhelming at first but turned into one of my favorite albums ever). I'm still waiting on my copy of _The Grotto_. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Mar 2003 23:04:22 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Live At The House O'Muzak Presents: HAPPY RHODES Hi, Okay, I think I've managed to peel myself off the ceiling far enough to be able to get this post out ... Happy is coming to play at our house!!! Sunday, April 6 at 4:00 pm Live At The House O'Muzak New Haven, Connecticut, USA Suggested donation: $10 I'm sure I don't have to remind anyone here that it has been almost 2 years since that fateful day at Ectofest West, when Happy grievously injured her hand. As she posted on auntiesocialmusic.com last month, she's looking to do a few low-key performances to get her sea legs back. When she e-mailed me to ask if woj and I would be interested in having her, I just about died. Even though this means that we will be hosting concerts three weekends in a row, there was NO WAY we were going to say no!!! I'm not going to publicize this to our mailing list until the ectophiles have gotten a good crack at the reservations. We can squeeze 30 or so people in here (heck, we're going to have 35 for both of Vienna's shows in a couple weeks at the rate we're going), so start making plans and tell all your friends! We have ample crash space for those who may want to come from out of town, and will make as many runs to and from the New Haven Metro-North/Amtrak train station as needed. To reserve your seats, just reply to this e-mail. We're looking forward to seeing a whole bunch of ectophiles here on the 6th!! Don't forget the other really cool stuff we have happening here in the next couple months: Sunday, March 16 @4 pm: DOROTHY SCOTT Saturday, March 29 @8 pm: VIENNA TENG (**sold out**) Sunday, March 30 @4 pm: VIENNA TENG Sunday, April 13 @4 pm: SLOAN WAINWRIGHT TRIO Sunday, April 27 @4 pm: RUTHIE FOSTER w/Syd Cassone =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Dorothy Scott, 3/16/03 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 00:05:08 -0500 From: Paul Blair Subject: Re: Live At The House O'Muzak Presents: HAPPY RHODES Holy crap! I'm mighty impressed. Everyone in the area should be flocking to these shows. Every one of them is a killer. We've hosted Ruthie and Cyd twice in the last two years, and they are wonderful. Ruthie has a huge voice that completely fills the room, and one of the warmest, most joyful spirits of anyone I've seen. We are hosting Amy Denio again this Friday. That should be quite an evening too, though of an entirely different sort. It's an oddball night for us. Besides Amy, we've got Janet Feder playing prepared guitar and local poet extraodinaire Lisa Gill reading a few cool poems. She'll be reading the one that stunned me last time I saw her - - "Encryption is Standard C You Will Miss Bits & Pieces of Me" After that, it's: April 3: Kate McDonnell (classic folk style, funny stories, upside down guitar playing) April 30: Aengus Finnan (Irish-Canadian songwriter. Kerrville New Folk winner) May 10: Suzanne Buirgy (powerful and passionate) June 1: Cosy Sheridan (Mistress of the short witty song [and more]) July 17: Susan Gibson (former lead singer of the Groobees and author of the Dixie Chicks' hit "Wide Open Spaces") August 9 or 10: Full Frontal Folk (high energy punky folk 5 piece) neal now editing: AMP House Concert #41 with Sophie Rayomond (from Australia) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #68 *************************
