The other night I was listening to WFUV as I was driving around, and by chance, caught a live performance of an artist that I never heard of. His name is Joseph Arthur. I was in and out of my car constantly, but each time I came back, he was there with me for some very good company. I enjoyed him emensely.. (even with him singing with larengitous!) I finally caught his name at the end of the show, and made sure to write it down for further perusal. So, I found his web site and read about the new album, and of course plan on grabbing myself a copy when I have the funds ;) Interestingly enough, I went on to discover that Joseph was discovered by Peter Gabriel in the mid-'90s and soon signed to his Real World label. Man, how the circle builds!! I then went on to read about a distribution of the new album. I thought it was a clever idea, and immediately, for some reason, thought of Happy; when she is ready to release hers. The web site said something like: So and so wrote to offer a free copy of the (live?) 2 disc set of Joe's to anyone buying a new copy of Redemption's Son through so and so's website. The cost of it is actually cheaper than if one were to buy only the live disc at a show. They are hoping that those who buy it for the live set (thus ending up with an extra copy) will use the second copy to turn on a friend. "We are hoping to have additional shows available, in this same manner, later this month." Since Happy distributed many of her past works unto her loyal fans (including myself) to distribute freely to spread listening awareness (or happiness, as I like to say,) not so long ago, I couldn't help but think Happy might want to try something like this. Maybe even with the new album herself on {tour} or maybe some of her earlier releases. Of course I would rather Happy have the money (!!!) but the idea might be worth kicking around if it would turn more people onto her music and her fans are loyal enough to pitch in (which I have to think they are.) Maybe we can even help her burn the extra copies - as with the distrubution and copies of LHD's were made to us. I'm willing and able... Well, just wanted to spread a good word for Joseph Arthur here and pass on the idea if it could somehow benefit Happy. Just an idea. Thanks for listening. Suzanne PS. I thought the best part of the whole Grammy's was the end when Peter Gabriel was hosting.. I actually sat up! lol.. As for Nora Jones, I think if I hear that song one more time I shall be forced to eat the parasites in my ears..... She was there with her parents and seemed a bit agog by it all. I picked up her demo which had some nice songs on it, that showed a lot of potential. She plays piano and signs--which in itself was refreshing after endless singer-songwriter-guitar players that Folk Alliance is full of. Someone last year called her a young Anne HEaton. This year I saw her again and was furhter impressed--she had a guitarist with her this time (one member of her band) and put on a very tight exciting set. I've been listening to her CD "Changing Faces" and it just totally kicks ass. Personally I find her a lot more exciting than Anne HEaton (whom I like as well). Her voice has a bit more character. The band is tight, the piano is rocking (she's got more in common with say Joe Jackson or Ben Folds than Tori Amos). The songwriting is clever and not full of typical love songs. I highly recommend thsi one. It's available at CDbaby--but I could only get to it through the link from her website--searching on CD Baby for some reason didn't find it. Her web site is www.katietodd.com. She's from Chicago and looks like she plays around there quite a bit. I'd definitely check her out if you get the chance. Check her out! Jeff Hanson n.p.
