Dan's an amazing musician. SGM is a lot more like Mr. Bungle > than Charming Hostess, but if you like that sort of thing, they're worth > checking out! *sigh* This is what I get for not finishing my Best of the Year list. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum did the best single live performance I saw last year, and their album is great. And Carla Kihlstedt is a brilliant violinist. Don't know about the Mr. Bungle comparison, though. People have told me I'd like Mr. Bungle, and I absolutely hated them. I'd describe SGM as nearly-atonal art rock, myself. (One of my favorite styles.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2003 04:09:07 +0000 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Grammys Vickie said, <> We had the chance to claim her. I may be hallucinating, but I think I mentioned her being on the Charlie Hunter album some time ago. I also posted the address of a good article about her before she hit big. I suppose like other jazz singers, she doesn't really follow the Bush/Rhodes path, so it is hard to see how she fits into the ecto environs. Jones certainly didn't evince irksome self-satisfaction like someone getting a Grammy for a freshman effort might be tempted to do. Probably has something to do with having played tinkly dinner music at a cafeteria in Dallas to make ends meet. She probably also knows getting a Grammy doesn't guarantee fame or fortune. About those Grammys: I just watched the last thirty minutes of the thing and was struck with how completely unrecognizable the audience was. It wasn't like the Oscars, where the auditorium is jam-packed with celebrities. Are there fifty to a hundred support personnel for each star in the record industry? Isn't there something wrong with that? I can't imagine Woody Guthrie, Jimmy Rodgers, Bukka White, or the Carter family getting up and smiling into the camera while taking their award. These people handmade their music. Fortunately, there are still people making music in obscurity who will never be seen waving from the dais into the eye of the camera. That's not to say I wouldn't like to see Happy's smiling face up there someday. But the Grammy itself isn't a measure of how good or useful the music is. Speaking of laboring in obscurity: Friday night I went out to see Little Jack Melody and His Young Turks. I may have been taking my life into my hands, but since the band doesn't use fireworks (though they do play a mean jazzbo version of "Cum on Feel the Noize"), I felt safe enough. I checked to see where the exits were and cast a baleful eye over the thirty co-listeners sharing the venue with me. The best thing was, I paid five bucks, and sat right in front of the lead singer. He proceeded to sing a string of songs that could tear your heart out. I especially liked the political statement of the last three songs. "Switzerland," "On the Blank Generation (The Cake Song)," and "America." "Switzerland" is a jingoistic song about invading Switzerland to show them how it feels to have to fight. The reason for the invasion: they sell us cheese with holes in it and make stupid cuckoo clocks. The "Blank Generation" is a song about yuppieism and trickle down economics with a refrain provided by Marie Antoinette. "America" is the Sondheim/Bernstein song sung in a Puerto Rican accent that tends to drift into Peter Lorre territory. Sorry for waxing verbose. Dallas and surrounding territory were coated in three inches of ice today, and I didnt get my usual cathartic release of going to work and having interpersonal relations. CROW CHARGES: GRAMMY COMMITTEE WARNED ME In New York City on Sunday night, Sheryl Crow claimed GRAMMY reps called her management telling her to refrain from making anti-war statements during the live awards show! "I was [going to do something] and then the GRAMMY committee called up my manager... they said they wanted to keep it all neutral," Crow bravely revealed backstage. MORE GRAMMY officials quicky moved in to action -- "categorically" denying Crow's charge. "No one contacted any artist to talk about content," GRAMMY President Neil Portnow said sternly. On Friday the DRUDGE REPORT disclosed that a CBS executive warned microphones could be unplugged if live performances turned political. "It, of course, is a final option [to cut the microphone.] But it's a very real option," said the top source, who demanded anonymity. "There is a time for political commentary, this is not one of them!" On Saturday CBS's official spokesman Chris Ender publicly denied the DRUDGE story: "There will be no restrictions on artistic expression or opinions expressed during acceptance speeches." Crow, whose guitar strap featured the words "NO WAR" during her on-air Sunday night performance, stopped short of her AMERICAN MUSIC AWARDS turn when she wore a 'War is Not the Answer' sequined t-shirt and told reporters, 'I think war is based in greed and there are huge karmic retributions that will follow. I think war is never the answer to solving any problems.
