Keller" Subject: d. mccarthy/c. hostess I had been meaning to say that that's about the best description of Dawn McCarthy I've ever seen, and I've tried my hand at it a few times myself. ("Scarcely sane sprite"!) In a world of--how shall I say it--free-spirited musicians, she is the freest. She can sing anything from blues to Celtic folk to Middle Eastern improv to yodeling, and with great panache. Faun Fables is a duo (with terrific guitarist and singer Nils Frykdahl) well worth seeing. And if I'm not mistaken, Dawn McCarthy has been sitting in as one of the vocalists of Charming Hostess (who have played New York a couple times the last year or so, and I still haven't managed to see them). (I'm not going to do the Vardo mantra this time around: the band is dead and gone and their one EP o.p.) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Feb 2003 15:09:26 +0100 From: Catherine Sundnes Subject: Ectophiles in Oslo/Norway - going to Ephemera concert? Hullo! As both of my friends who actually liked Ephemera suddenly are going away next weekend I suddenly find myself without anyone to go with to the Ephemera "Air" release concert at John Dee on Friday 28th ... Anyone? As they won the "Spellemannspris" yesterday, I guess they might get sold out of tickets soon. http://www.ephemera.no I can't wait to find the album "Air" in the stores tomorrow :) Maybe we need our own Norwegian ectophile mailinglist? But _And The Ass Saw The Angel_ is a masterpiece, that's for sure. Such a clever fellow Cave is. It reads like the devil's poetry. BTW, there are plenty of copies on eBay. For more on his writing endeavors, the CD lecture _The Secret Life of the Love Song_ is a must for anyone into poetry or songwriting. Cave's literary brain is not surprising... his parents were an English teacher and a librarian. He also went to art school. If you like eleanor, you should absolutely run out and get this disc too :) On an unrelated note, I was listening to Lindi again (another amazing disc) - is she up to anything new/touring/etc? - -Jason, very jealous of anyone going to see ephemera... ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Feb 2003 12:05:31 -0800 From: cyo@landoftheblind.com Subject: Re: [deep-blue] Portland, OR? to the band, duo? looking for Portland Gigs As a former long time Portland's still home, singer, let me recommend a few places. Since you didn't say what kind of music you play at all, since you are a duo, and connected to Ecto, I will guess that you are a folky group and send you appropiate places. In Portland, last minute, give a try, if you are folky, to Laurelthirst Pub, an excellent small venue many greats play at. Aladin Theatre is rather big and very hard to get into. Also, Mt Tabor Theatre on Hawthorn St (the happening street on the east side). (I'm in SF, without all the numbers, just call)and try Artichoke Cafe, 503 232-8845 a nice singer/songwriter showcase place If yo want to busk for dough, go under the Burnside Bridge and talk to the folks at Saturday Market (about 1000folks a day on Sat and Sun). If they are full, just play at the fountain just outside the market and put out yer hat. In Eugene, try Cafe Paradiso, 541 484- 9933 and Luna, 541 434-5862 Land of the Blind, my 4 piece, had a great time and a full house in a wonderful house concert put on by a lovely friendly couple, try them at jannaleigh@rhythmofthelight.org or call Janna at Rhythm of the Light (541) 345-4893 the address is 2720 High St., Eugene, OR 97405 (one of the best House Concerts we ever did, Janna is great and did a lot of promo for us!!!) Half way, Corvallis area, there is Oregon State University, 541 11737-1562 and ask to play in the MU Lounge also- Lenora's Ghost Tavern in Independance 503 838-2937 In Ashland, the Ashland Grill is nice and friendly, lots of music-hungry students. (Feeds ya too) 541 482-4131 that's some tips from my Oregon Tours, I didn't give you bigger venues as they are probably full and I don't know how "big" you are, either fame or size wise good luck and have fun, Oregonians are very nice folks. peace, cyoakha ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #53 *************************
