I'm afraid my apartment building -- or my lease, at any rate -- wouldn't be able to stand up to a house concert. I did, however, pass along some contact info for my favorite Portland venue, the Aladdin. I'm not familiar with these artists or their musical style, but the Aladdin books a pretty eclectic mix of artists, so it seemed worth a shot. Salem?). - ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 2003 00:12:12 -0800 From: Brian Bloom Subject: Re: FWD: [deep-blue] Portland, OR? Well, I've got a house in Vancouver (right next to Portland), but I don't know the first thing about house concerts. And I know even less about venues around here to recommend... (I know I've mentioned this here before.) I don't know if it's even still in print (the edition I read was the UK Penguin paperback), but it's pretty much exactly what you'd expect from listening to his lyrics. Lots of pain, death, deformity, and black bones buried in the earth. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Dorothy Scott, 3/16/03 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 2003 13:26:03 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: FWD: [deep-blue] Portland, OR? Hi, mooman mooed: >Well, I've got a house in Vancouver (right next to Portland), but I don't >know the first thing about house concerts. Do you know how to throw a party? Do you have a living room (or family room, or game room in the basement, or whatever) big enough to hold a couple dozen seated people? If so, then you can host a house concert. Of course, there's the matter of whether you're interested in doing it ... it's a bit of work, but not really all that much, and it's a ton of fun. I'll be happy to send you a primer off-list if you (or anyone else) is interested in doing this. We just hosted our 20th (!) house concert, so I think we've pretty much gotten in down by now. :) Beth Amsel is on my "to host" list, actually ... this reminds me that I've been meaning to get in touch with her about that. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Dorothy Scott, 3/16/03 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 2003 13:33:17 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Fw: Upcoming Charming Hostess gig Hi, Joe forwarded: > > A BENEFIT FOR THE REVOLUTIONARY ASSOCIATION OF THE WOMEN OF AFGHANISTAN >(RAWA) & CD RELEASE PARTY FOR THE AZADI! I haven't seen them live myself, but they did a haunting live set on WFMU last year. Listening to their music puts me in mind of Neil Gaiman's darkest stories, as illustrated by Dave McKean. I'm sure Don Keller can jump in and give a much more useful accounting of them (and of Dawn McCarthy's previous band, Vardo), but the description above pretty well sums up Faun Fables. (I believe woj recently uttered the statement that "Dawn McCarthy is disturbed." But he meant that in the best, most positive way. :) Speaking of Charming Hostess, the gigs I have seen advertised in NYC have all mentioned Jewlia Eisenberg (though I recall the spelling as "Julia"), so she must have some musicians in the City that she hooks up with whenever she's in the time zone. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Dorothy Scott, 3/16/03 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Feb 2003 11:30:36 -0800 From: Allan Anderson Subject: Re: ecto-digest V9 #51 Nonetheless, I am quite sorry to have missed it. ah, the lucky UK'ers!
