They gave it five out of five stars. It's unusual for Hammill, who's been banging away beyond the fringes of the music scene for many, many years now, to have such a high-profile review: "Peter Hammill is the great British idiosyncratic vocalist's favourite idiosyncratic vocalist, feted by David Bowie, Johnny Rotten, Thom Yorke and the Fall's Mark E Smith. The attraction is obvious. Hammill's career has seen him relentlessly confront the uncomfortable truth about humanity, and, although he has never enjoyed great commercial success, he has never compromised himself. His favourite themes - futility, time, personal inadequacy and death (and those are the cheery ones) - would make Leonard Cohen sound like Jimmy Osmond. His voice, a howl of hurt and outrage, is an acquired taste but, as the chap in front of me comments: "Once he's got you, he's got you for life." Hammill's fan base is committed: some fans remain from his early 1970s days in prog-rock outfit Van der Graaf Generator; others are fresh-faced converts keen to glimpse the man in fearsome form. Hammill dissects his favourite themes unforgivingly, and his music shifts around them. He has dabbled with prog-rock and drum machines, and is currently joined by an electric violinist, Stuart Gordon, whose John Cale-ish dramatic swoops are an excellent foil. Between songs, Hammill, a youthful and dapper 54, is personable: when the equipment breaks down, the singer and violinist even engage in a Pete and Dud- type routine. But once the songs begin, they lock into them absolutely, taking the audience on a white-knuckle ride peppered with moments of startling insight and musical beauty. If I Could is an early highlight (the killer line "She's gonna leave you" spat out with fury), and others wallow in a lack of self- esteem. Hammill hurls in what he mischievously dubs "positive" songs, but moments later, the serene A Way Out is virtually a suicide note set to music. By the closing Modern, which rages as powerfully as anything by the Sex Pistols, the sense of catharsis for band and audience is undeniable. Leading us into the blackness and allowing tantalising, uplifting shafts of light, his life's work is a metaphor for life itself. " Quite a coup -- perhaps he will now get the recognition he so richly deserves. - ------------------------------------------------ This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 04:16:09 -0800 From: "The Ectophiles' Guide" Subject: Recent changes to the Ectophiles' Guide Latest changes to the Ectophiles' Guide 18 February 2003 New Guide entries added for: * Edie Carey * Judith Henry with Damiel Guay * Sigur Ros Changes made to the entries for: * Bel Canto (new album) * Penny Flanagan (additional comments) * Anne Heaton (additional comments) * Terami Hirsch (new demos + additional comments) * October Project (updated info) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- You are receiving this email because you have asked to be notified of updates to the Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music at http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/. I'm trying to come up with ways of getting Ms. Rhodes greater exposure. I'm not the first and I won't be the last, I'm sure. Her fulfillment company, CDSTREET.com, has certain criteria which when met, can give an artist greater exposure on their site. One of these is reviews. If we all go to http://www.cdstreet.com, type Happy's name into the search field, click on "Post Review" and write something positive, it will up the chances of Happy's music hitting more people. We all access Happy's news and music through HER website but those who haven't heard of her, can "stumble" upon her through searches and whatnot, on CDSTREET's site. So the more hits she gets there, the more exposure they will give her on their site. Thanks for reading! As a Cave aficionado, however, I must inform you that Nick Cave's been going through a mid-life crisis since he was a sperm. It's just more obvious now that he's got Sting's hairline. And talk about moping and sighing... _Nocturama_ is far less whiny and suicidal than _No More Shall We Part_ or _The Boatman's Call._ Nick's a grownup now. He's ninety-four years old, his track lines have healed, and he's marinating. As far as lengthy songs like "Babe, I'm On Fire," have you forgotten "O'Malley's Bar," which clocks in at a whopping 14:28? How many times does he say "La la la la" in "The Curse of Millhaven"? And just how black is PJ Harvey's hair in "Black Hair"? I dare say it's pretty damned black. Cave is notorious for his rhyming, his wordiness, his repetition, and especially his strife. It's just a Cave thing. I believe the man to be a genius. My only complaint is the mullet. Sharon > Nick Cave: Nocturama. Jeez, what's happening? Has mid-life crisis hit > everyone early? I'll admit, I'm not a Nick Cave expert: I just thought that No > More Shall We Part was the best album of its year. This, however....it hums > along agreeably enough, the slow and sombre songs of sorrow, like offcuts from > the previous album. It kicks into life at one point, sits up, spits into the > fire, then slumps back into its chair. Back to the rambling reverie. After it > has delivered the most cack-handed lyrics I've heard in many a year in "Rock of > Gibraltar", it then launches into "Babe, I'm On Fire". Remember that title. > You'll hear a lot of it. It's the kind of song that, 30 seconds in, you > think "All right! This ROCKS!". Two minutes in, and it's: "Yeah, yeah, okay, > clever rhyme". For the next TWELVE BLOODY MINUTES, however, you can only > say "Okay, I get it, I GET IT!! Everyone's on FIRE!! Jeez, what was the name > of the song again? Oh, thanks, I'd almost forgotten in the 10 seconds since > the last time it was shouted". After all the moping and sighing that goes on > in the album, some people might welcome this: To me it was just repetitive, > dull, repetitive, stupid, repetitive and redundant. And long. And repetitive. > > adam k. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 10:41:22 -0500 From: noam tchotchke Subject: tori at radio city 3/7 ticket for sale i have one extra ticket for tori's performance at radio city music hall on friday, march 7th that i would like to sell. the seat is ORCH2, row QQ, seat 206. this is house right on the main floor, about 15 rows from the stage -- there is a pretty detailed seating chart at (although, it does not show the three row orchestra pit in front of the main orchestra). face value is $50. ticketmaster fees were $10.12. so, i'd like to sell for $60.12, but the price is negotiable if anyone is interested. drop me a note off-list if you are. one criteria: you'll be sitting next to me for the show so you gotta be quiet! ;) thanks! woj n.p. jethro tull - too old to rock'n'roll: too young to die! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 11:49:02 -0500 (EST) From: stumck@webtv.net (stuart mckenney) Subject: SALE: CDs & Music Magazines hi list(s) -- A reputable and experienced ebay seller is helping me clear out a room which was formerly used to store music magazines by listing them for me on ebay -- some are being auctioned in multi-issue "lots," and others are being sold individually -- many of them come with CDs and all are priced to move. i will post a link at the bottom of this message so that interested parties can investigate -- if the link breaks up and can't be followed, just visit the ebay site and click on "search" at the top of the home page -- doing this will take you to a page where you can conduct a "search by seller" -- her auctions can be accessed by entering her user ID: myhobbyshop Some of the magazines listed are Amplifier, Audities, The Big Takeover, Bucketfull Of Brains, Chickfactor, CMJ (with CDs), Dagger, Devil In The Woods, Dirty Linen, Discoveries, Flipside, Goldmine, Harp, Hot Press, Ice, Ink Disease, UK Independent Catalogue (great zine!), Losing Today, Magnet (with CDs), Melody Maker, Mojo (with CDs), NME (New Musical Express), No Depression, Option, Performing Songwriter, Pop Culture Press (with CDs), Popsided, Popwatch, Puncture, Q Magazine, Record Collector, Select (with CD), Shredding Paper, Sing Out!, Skyscraper (with CD), Stop Smiling, Uncut (with CDs), Venus, and Your Flesh. in the weeks and months to follow, we will be adding more of the aforementioned magazines plus many other titles, so please bookmark her auctions and check back frequently if you collect this kind of thing. due to the weight of many of the items and the ever-rising cost of international (outside-of-the-USA) shipping, we have these auctions set up to be shipped to US destinations only. apologies to anyone here who is annoyed by this type of sale advertisement -- i'm not a cd or magazine dealer so i won't be doing this all the time -- i'm just a regular guy who bought too much stuff in the past and i'm currently trying to create some more space at home and raise a little cash in the process. i'd like to pass these items on to someone who appreciates them -- i simply don't have time to read about music at all anymore, but for people out there who do, these issues can provide a lot of satisfaction at a reasonable price. thanks, and take care -- here's that ebay link -- please make sure to check all of the pages: http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=myhobbyshop&completed=0&sort=3&since=-1&include=0&page=1&rows=25 stuart mckenney ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 11:07:18 -0800 (PST) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: singing CDBaby's praises I'd ordered from CD baby when I lived in the States, but only last week had I placed an order from my new home in the UK. I am impressed. First off, the international airmail rates are realistic -- far better than those of the big chains (Amazon, etc.). I've had people send me CDs from the US, and I know how much it costs to mail CDs. CDBAby does not rip off international customers with exhorbitant postage and handling costs. Cliff House (new) -- "arcade" feel All Things Told Indiana (Mila says what inspired this song was a nightmare where she was trying to escape from Illinois to Indiana, by boat) My Big Holiday (new) -- vaguely tropical feel, though what inspired it was apparently a holiday her sister took to New Zealand, since Mila alleges she's never had a big holiday Motorboat (Mila mentioned a motorboat ride in Wisconsin. Maybe it was just that they were in what Imogen called a "stripped down" configuration--only one keyboard and a PowerBook. (She said that at the concert later that night Guy would be surrounded by toys, and she would wear a strap-on keyboard.) Imogen was wearing a big floppy burgundy velvet hat, an interesting knotted shawl/wrap sort of thing over some kind of loud print, and white hairy boots.
