Anybody ever hear of them, and know anything about > them? (They have an exceedingly annoying web site that doesn't like my > browser.) I've heard their tracks (the disc got into our playstock at work for one day by accident) and, yeah, they were all that grabbed me from the soundtrack. From what I've been able to tell, they have a first album due in March (I think). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 22:04:31 -0000 From: "neal copperman" Subject: New Hector Zazou! They're defunct? So does that mean the group called Charming Hostess that's been playing gigs in NYC lately isn't the one I've been thinking of, and have thus been very upset to have missed? =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Dorothy Scott, 3/16/03 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Feb 2003 01:54:21 +0100 (CET) From: Yngve Hauge Subject: AM & UV Hi, During the Bylarm concert in Oslo Anne Marie Almedal (Velvet Belly) did a concert with her new sideproject AM & UV which stands for Anne Marie & Ultraviolet. But I'm excited about this one, since I'm playing with some amazing local folks: 21 Grand 449B 23rd St. Near 19th Street BART Oakland CA Wednesday, Feb 19 2003 8:00 PM from Melbourne Australia Adam Simmons - saxophones Solo/trio/quintet With Rent Romus -alto/soprano/flute Damon Smith - doublebass Joseph Zitt - voice Henry Kaiser - guitar Philip Everett - drums/percussion/auto harp I actually don't know and have never heard the headliner (it's fairly common that I first meet some of the people with whom I'm playing when I hit the stage -- there have been a few times that I've never found out who some of the people I'm playing with were), but Rent, Damon, and Philip are amazing locals, and Henry Kaiser's been just about everywhere over the years. And yeah, it's in Oakland... but there are actually parts of the city that *aren't* immediate deathtraps for out of towners !-) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 22:53:03 -0600 From: "Rachel Stone" Subject: kathleen edwards there's been some discussion of kathleen edwards lately. and i thought i'd pipe up. (or in. or whatever the correct term is.) i've been a fan of kathleen's for the last four or so years since the first time i heard her little EP (with the incredible song "nagaski," which is so raw unbearably raw live that i've seen it make people cry). after having the chance to catch a few shows, i thought i'd offer up my top five reasons to like her (in random order): 1. instead of demanding a new drink, she simply gulped down a double jack daniels (straight up) with a couple of fruit flies in it (while giving an impromptu concert, sitting on top of a bar with a borrowed guitar, playing very different and almost unrecognizable arrangements of her songs). 2. despite being nominated for a juno award, being on david letterman and jay leno, she still doesn't have glossy photos of herself. 3. a few years back, jane siberry invited her on stage to play violin on one of her songs. kathleen was very nervous, not actually being familiar with any siberry songs. and we have all heard stories of siberry's blunt and demanding musical nature. but siberry actually kept kathleen up for two songs and praised (inasmuch as siberry praises) her afterwards. kathleen also completely held her own in a post-show conversation with siberry, and that is definitely something to be admired. 4. she will frequently stop in the middle of her song to tell an amusing story but never lose a beat. 5. she can play her violin and guitar at the same time, with a little help for some pedals, and it's awfully cool. people should grab "failer." it's a great album. from the full-on crank and twang of her more alt.country songs to the intimate little songs that just ache. and you shouldn't miss her live. you just shouldn't. even those who don't enjoy the twang can enjoy her. "national steel" is one of the best songs i've heard all year. r. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Feb 2003 23:14:03 -0600 From: "Rachel Stone" Subject: nathan anyone who hasn't had the chance to hear winnipeg band nathan has the opportunity to hear a live acoustic performance via the internet. on friday, february 21 at 6:30pm (central time), nathan will be doing a live performance at the university of winnipeg as part of CKUW 95.9 FM's annual FUNdrive (their weeklong pledge drive). people call listen live by visiting www.ckuw.org. (it's a double bill with another local act, the paperbacks). nathan is one of the best musical things to come out of canada in a long time. they're a blend of bits of rootsy folk, sweet pop and itchily subversive lyrics. you think the songs are all happy and nice, but they're actually quite biting and a bit disturbing in a wonderfully cathartic way. tight vocal harmonies, an accordion, a supreme lack of overproduction. and i'd compare them to something, but i can't. hear them for yourself. but christine fellows, mia sheard and rheostatics fans should enjoy nathan thoroughly. you can - and should - find out more about nathan at www.nathanmusic.ca. r. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #47 *************************
