That's great advise, and one worthy of keeping in mind for the next time... But, I already spent enough energy deciding to settle on the Denon DVD-1600, after having sent back a Mitsubishi DD-6030 because it was misbehaving. Admittedly off-topic, and just in case I appeal to any DVD deadheads out there, I've got to vent about my dismay when I found out that the Denon is really a Panasonic in drag. All my audio gear is strictly Denon, because I have always admired their "purity" and quality. My aging Denon CD player, a DCD-2560, although it won't play today's poorly-mastered CDRs, will reproduce the warmest, sweetest sound out of any stock CD; quadruple 20-bit D/A converters, all sorts of audio isolation, and a vibration-resistant chassis, collectively do the trick; heck, it even has a relay that disconnects power from the audio-out path when the disc is not playing, for true sonic silence! The DRA-625 amp/receiver, DRM-700A tape deck, and DN-550R CD recorder perform comparatively well. I guess that Denon's honor may be saved when one realizes that, beyond the Panasonic DVD guts, the unit has a Faroudja progressive scan decoder, and I imagine other Denon-proprietary audio circuitry; after all, audio is what is Denon's thing. In fact, the unit does have an "Audio Only" front-panel button, which, according to the manual (oh yes, I do RTFM) bypasses the video circuitry when playing DVD-Audio discs for added sonic purity. So, that's my late-night DVD/Denon rant. If you feel inclined, chime in, whether privately or on-list. And, to make the OMCP (Obligatory Music Content Police) happy, let me say that I bought Sarah McLachlan's Video Collection; the early videos are so "green" that I almost laughed, particularly the Canadian version of Vox; the latter three videos, from _Surfacing_, are, on the other hand, all pro. But, in the end, it was really, really nice to see Sarah in the flesh (so to speak) singing her songs. Thanks for the recommendation, John. Oh my gosh, is Neile going to start quoting DVD music video reviews for The Guide? She has done some past work with the apocalyptic-folk band Sol Invictus. Her solo work, however, reminds me of a cross between Virginia Astley and Dawn Upshaw, with a smidgen of Lisa Gerrard thrown in for good measure. Lush, pastoral and unabashedly beautiful. The CD "Sleep Memory" (1998) is all original compositions--a collection of pastoral art songs. "Black Is the Colour" (2001) is her interpretations of madrigals and folk songs, not dissimilar from Azam Ali's solo album. She has a gorgeous voice, and her backing band, The Sumacs, are a perfect chamber-pop accompaniment. http://www.sallydoherty.com You can buy her stuff on Middle Pillar. ===== Reviews of esoteric, atmospheric literature, music and movies: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ethereality/ Yahoo! I just received Charlotte Martin (due to a recommendation from Terami Hirsch, they're friends) and I like it a lot. But I also ordered Regina Spektor's "Eleven Eleven" and I'm smitten. I can't seem to stop listening to it. It's quite odd but in a good way. The production is really sparse usually just voice and piano, sometimes voice and bass. It's a little jazzy, bluesy (which I normally don't like AT ALL) and just plain cool. You can listen to some samples at CD Baby's site. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/spektor This is actually her first CD (she has two) but when I went to order the newest one they were out of stock. I've since listened to her new one at her website (reginaspektor.com) but haven't ordered it yet. It's different and I don't know if i like it as well as "Eleven Eleven". ~Amy www.collectedsounds.com A Guide to Women in Music ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Feb 2003 08:32:59 -0600 From: "Amy" Subject: RE: CDBaby order? Thanks for all the suggestions. I found my order had already grown by leaps and bounds, so I had to nip it in the bud. Plus, I have been doing a good job of keeping up on CDBaby recommendations. BTW, at Folk Alliance, the CDBaby booth was one of the most crowded. I had planned to stop by and say how much I enjoyed ordering from them, but there was always a long line. (Just about the only place that had a consistant line like that.) Yngve suggested: > If you haven't got the new Jill Tracy yet - that might be an option. I also have the Regina Spektor CD "songs". I had kind of mixed feelings about it, but should pull it out and listen some more sometime. I alternated between finding it interesting and finding it annoying, but I can't remember why anymore. Is it worth it, considering I've already got "Cake and Pie"? Patty Larkin's new album "red=luck" came out yesterday. Yay. And I'm sure everybody knows Dar Williams' "The Beauty of the Rain" comes out next week also. Double, possibly triple-yay. Also, I just found out that Carrie Newcomer put out a new album called "The Gathering of Spirits" last year. Yipes - better order it. Finally - I know I keep asking this, but does ANYBODY have any idea what's going on with Abra Moore's new album "No Fear"? This waiting is killing me... Incredible as it sounds, I have not seen ANY live music since Patty Larkin was out here in March last year, unless you count Handel's Messiah last xmas.
