My recollection is that she didn't, You are correct - the actors trained to look convincing while singing, but the actual singing voices weren't theirs. Basically the actors were supposed to act and the singers to sing. :-) - -- ____________________________________________________________ Sebastien Andrivet. Raoul Volfoni ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Feb 2003 16:01:32 -0500 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: more 2002 albums I'm kind of glad there hasn't been much new music of interest (with the exception of Patty Larkin's and Dar Williams' upcoming releases). I'm still catching up on 2002 albums I missed. The Be Good Tanyas - Blue Horse Beautiful alt-country traditionals and originals from a Canadian trio. I love how they make even "Oh Susanna"- a song I've heard so many times I hardly think about it as a song anymore - sound so fresh. This would also have been high on my 2002 list if I'd heard it then. They're playing at the Bottom Line in NYC next month. Is anyone planning on going? I haven't decided yet. Sarah Lentz - Everything's All Right Similar to her debut album, No Going Home, with added confidence. The music here makes me think of autumn colors - deep reds and golds, with some bright yellows in the middle on the title track "All Right" and "At the Heart." I especially like the background vocals on "Mirror." She doesn't use bg vocals often, so when she does, they feel really special. Vienna Teng - Waking Hour I'm probably one of the last people here to say something about this album, but I thought I'd throw out my recommendation to anyone who hasn't heard it yet. Do yourself a favor - go buy it. It sat on my "to buy" list for a long time, and I finally got around to ordering it from CDBaby (who were out of stock) last week and listening to it this morning. I think I didn't get it for a long time because, from the clips I'd heard, I thought the album might be too pretty. Like something that you would listen to once or twice and then find too sweet to listen to again. I hope that doesn't sound mean, I'm just trying to be honest. Anyway, the happy point is that those thoughts were so WRONG. There's power and depth in the songwriting and the performance, intelligence in the lyrics, and yes, beauty in Vienna's voice and piano playing. And I've only listened to it once so far, so I look forward to discovering even more. Congratulations to Vienna for recording such a wonderful album and many thanks for sharing it with everyone. Edie Carey - Come Close: the live (photo album) Listening to Edie's live album feels like being at one of her shows, or even better, like she's in your home playing for you. Most of the songs are solo with acoustic guitar; Sam Shaber and Anne Heaton sing back up on a few. There are 16 music tracks in all: 2 songs from The Falling Places, 8 from Call Me Home, 4 new songs, 1 cover, and 1 bonus track. The rest of the tracks are banter. Edie's really funny, and I like that she's not afraid of looking weird. That un-self-conscious spirit shines through on these tracks and in her choice of photographs and commentary. The album is also edited well. The banter tracks are short (most under 30 seconds) and the applause after songs is also short. Long enough to make you feel like you're at a live show but not long enough to be annoying. Did I mention that her vocals and guitar sound great too? I also got 2000's Call Me Home a few weeks ago at the Fez show. Edie ventured into folk-pop with this one, even rocking out on "Come Close." It reminds me a lot of Jonatha Brooke. At first, having heard some of these songs in live solo shows, I thought they had too much going on in these versions, but after a few listens, I don't think so, except perhaps in "Disco Ball Heart." Edie's voice is so sweet. There's a moment near the end of "August" when her voice seems to float above the music. Even though most of these songs appear on the live album, if you like Edie's music, it's worth getting both discs. The 2 songs here not on the other album are both good, and the versions are different enough. If you're not familiar with Edie's music, I'd probably get the live album first. JoAnn, who's really excited "Chicago" has FINALLY come to a theater near her. It occupies all of my time just to try to get a copy over here in Germany ;-) Right now it seems rather impossible ... I guess I4ll have to spend my summer vacation in the states ;-) - -- Gruss, Alex http://www.geocities.com/bootlegs66 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Feb 2003 22:25:54 +0100 From: torbjm Subject: RE: #ecto on dalnet I'll be regular on #ecto, as usual, when I return from vacation. I am going to be on "The West Wing." I play "Heroes" and "Rock Me To Sleep" in a bar scene. I even have an acting line- Thank you. It will be shot on the 6th and it will air Feb. 12th. I will be recording the song prior to taping and then will have to lip sync. I have never done that before and am afraid that I will perform like a bad drag queen. I am also worried about what to wear and what to do with my hair. Yesterday, I met with the nice stylist there, but they had out for me a couple of really bad sex kitten Euro trash outfits (think Versace) or the new peasant look (Stevie Nicks). I will bring some of my own tired clothes. I did actually see a shirt I liked. I hope I can keep it. The DVD, one-woman show, and new CD are in the works, I promise. Love, Jill One day later: OK, I was late in sending this out. Yesterday, they shot my scene. Everything went swell: I wasnt nervous, the cast took me out for dinner, and everyone said I looked and sounded fantastic (what are they going say?) I was there from 11:00 until 2:00AM. In between takes, I entertained the troops by singing bad cover songs. One bad thing, though- they took out my one spoken line. And, I practiced thank you for hours upon hours. cheers - --- A note from Jill's Webmaster: Through the miracle of (it would seem) incredibly quick editing and post-production, Jill's scene, which was filmed only two days ago, is indeed scheduled to air next week here in the U.S. "The West Wing" airs at 9:00 p.m. (8:00 Central Time) on NBC. Check your local TV listings for time & channel. If you live in another country where "The West Wing" airs, you'll have to watch for the episode (according to my information, it's titled "Inauguration Day Part II: Over There" and it's the 14th episode of the fourth season). If there are any updates, we'll put them on the web site, so keep on checking www.jillsobule.com! _________ - ----- End forwarded message ----- ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V9 #38 *************************
