Oh, that one. It's not really a story, and it's not a musical. It's a sort of game. A game of Cluedo with a game among the Cluedo players, if you will - the game above the game being a sort of exploration of womanhood. Each character is a game since it plays on the actress' strengths in an amusing way, the colours and flowers coding of the characters is a game, the absence of men is a rule, the singing is a sort of break into the game to express a truth, the secrets that are revealed are moves in the game. There are numerous references to 50s films. Yeah, I know. Abstract sophisticated stuff, and cinema for cinema's sake. Most cinema fans over here found it was great fun and quite beautiful, less dedicated audiences thought it was hard to get into the peculiar tone of the movie and understand how it should be read. Some peoples actually thought things were too obvious and thus boring, but then there are snobs everywhere. :-) If the audience was expecting "a movie", I can easily see how they were ambushed by this unusual object and were grated by the parts of the movie that fall flat. Especially for the sung part, which are very different in intend from the sung parts of a musical - not to mention that the movie can only really work if you're quite familiar with the actresses, I suppose. So I do agree it's "odd" and "oddly camp" - it's a peculiar, highly aesthetic thing and those things are quite subjective. :-) - -- ____________________________________________________________ Sebastien Andrivet. As you might guess from the title, the show is a tribute to Tori Amos, and the benefits go to RAINN, the organisation she helped start. One of the performers is someone I've seen mentioned a bit on the list lately, Vienna Teng. Here below are excerpts from the ToriTribute.com page. Sorry about the length! - -Neb - ----------------------------- http://www.toritribute.com/ What's it all about? The Tori Amos Tribute Show was founded by Lisa Ray, a pianist/singer/songwriter from Durham, NC. The first show was held on April 12, 2002, at the Arts Center in Carrboro, NC. With a budget of absolute zero, and only a few weeks to promote, organize, and deliver the event, several hundred dollars were raised to benefit RAINN. Local artists performed the music of Tori Amos, and had a great time being part of such a unique and wonderful event. This first event was not only a success, but a great learning experience for all involved. Most events of a charitable nature in the Durham/Chapel Hill area are linked to the big colleges..Duke or UNC - Chapel Hill. A single individual taking on this kind of activity is rare indeed, and the challenges and difficulties in organizing a large charity show are many. Having considered it at length, Lisa decided to try and make the Tori Tribute Show an annual event. Tori Tribute 2003 was on. Again, with a working budget of absolute zero, and with the stated goal of maximizing the financial benefit to RAINN, Lisa began seeking sponsors for the 2003 show. She immediately found good souls at Piano and Organ Distributors of Raleigh, who agreed to bring out a Yamaha Grand Piano, and at the Temple Ball Gallery, whose proprietor Rick Ramirez agreed to donate the De La Luz performance space free of charge. With these two major obstacles overtaken, the tentative first steps were taken towards engaging performers and artists to contribute to the show. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The response was immediate and positive. In just a few weeks, the group of performers had spanned the American continent, and a group of international artists had agreed to contribute to the event. Pauline Stuckey of Ontario, Canada created the "Scarlet Tori" graphic that heads this website, and donated the original art to be auctioned at the show. Soon, other major "tori centric" artists would join the cause - World Class Poster artist Bob Massey donated RAINN posters, Illustrator Herb Leonhard donated a new original Tori Painting "Butterfly", and doll designer Pat Kochie agreed to donate one of her highly prized pieces. Performers were also quick to offer their help..."veterans" of the Tori Tribute Show 2002 (Robert Baldwin, Alysson Light, Marty Thomas, Lisa Ray) were joined by regional acts (Skott Freedman, Melanie Sparks, Nikki Talley, Leslie Berry) and others coming from as far away as San Francisco (Vienna Teng), Philadelphia (Amber de Laurentis and Christine Havrilla), and New York (Denise Barbarita). In addition to the artists who are willing to put up their time and talent, there are many local folks who are contributing to the show by hosting artists, providing food and comfort at the show, and generally pitching in where necessary to make the event a great one. - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- All this, and still an operating budget of absolute zero. And that's really what the Tori Amos Tribute Show is all about: taking the things that we have and giving freely for the benefit of those who need it. And for the love of Tori!
