Both have received good reviews. And we are getting the Dar release at the same time as the US, thank goodness! :) > > And as for the movie studios ... I guess that > explains _Kangaroo > Jack_. I don't think we have that one yet, thankfully. The Hours opens here on the 14th, though, as does The Revenger's Tragedy -- updated version of Marlowe's play starring Derek Jacobi and Eddie Izzard. I do want to see both of them. I don't think the latter's out in the US yet. Ellen ===== "Literature stops in 1100. The problem is, over here, that broadband is still not as common as it is over in the states, not by a loooongg chalk. You have to be dedicated to shell out #30 (approx $45) a month, and even then it doesn't always work. Hence, MP3's just aren't in the picture for me. So, as long as it lasts, I'll savourthe minidisc. Meanwhile -- synchronicity or what? --- I was listening to some Throwing Muses for the first time in a while, and then noticed they've got a gig coming up in London at the end of March. And now, as mentioned on the list, they have a new album out. One of my favorites of this past year, and it's definitely on my list of favorite films, period. One thing I enjoyed most about it was that it was brave enough to tell these stories from flawed, troubled people's point of view. Excellent acting, a great score by Philip Glass, and it packs a painful emotional punch. :) Just how I like 'em! Hope you get to see it! Well, for starters, if you have any interest in Tori Amos at all I'll assume you've gotten the double-disc version of Scarlet's Walk -- the included DVD isn't lengthy, but worth the few extra bucks for that edition. After a cursory scan of my music titles, I also found: Bjork -- Volumen I haven't picked up the more recent live releases, but this an excellent music video collection (if you can still find it). Jonatha Brooke -- Steady Pull Kind of a cool idea. One side is a standard DVD-Video containing both behind-the-scenes footage of the recording of the album, as well as some lip-sync'ed music videos of other tracks. The other side is a full-on, high-resolution DVD-Audio of the album. Nicely done, especially for what appears to be a completely indie, non-major-label production. Capercaillie -- The Capercaillie Collection (1990 - 1996)* My favorite Scottish/Celtic band; if that (and the fact that Sean Connery's a fan :) doesn't scare you off, this is as good an introduction as any to the wonder that is Karen Matheson's voice. Concrete Blonde -- Still in Hollywood: The Videos This combines their previous two VHS releases into one disc. The earliest clips (especially "Caroline") are not the most watchable transfers I've ever seen, but worth having if your tastes run toward (as somebody on the Guide put it) "the crunchy side of ecto." Cowboy Junkies -- Open Road Live DVD and CD. Cranberries -- Stars Very nice (and comprehensive) video collection. Cranberries -- Live in Paris (version 2) What can I say -- I like the Cranberries. Version 2 of this title has a much improved menu design. Sarah McLachlan -- Video Collection (1989 - 1998) Sarah McLachlan -- Mirrorball If you have any interest in Sarah, both of these titles are must-haves. Natalie Merchant -- Live in Concert I'm not enamored with the all-cardboard packaging, but the concert itself is the next best thing to being there. Texas -- Paris* My favorite Scottish/non-Celtic band. The title is a (fairly) clever twist on the fact that they took their name from the Wim Wenders film Paris, Texas. I could only find this as an import, but the combination of *very* comprehensive video collection and full live concert AND interviews made it worthwhile. Various artists -- Everything is Nice: The Matador Records 10th Anniversary Anthology This is an odd little collection, but I think it has ectophilic potential. I got it primarily for Cat Power's "Cross Bones Style" video (which appeals to me for reasons that defy explanation), but it also includes clips from Bettie Serveert and Liz Phair, among others. *The titles I've marked with asterisks are all-region (region 0) PAL discs. Not every region 1 "NTSC" player supports this, but a LOT of recent models do -- my 2-year-old JVC XV-D723 certainly does. If your player's manual doesn't say one way or the other, I'd recommend borrowing or renting a region 0 PAL disc, if you can. We only have two: the aforementioned Bjork's _Volumen_, which I also recommend and Joni Mitchell's _Shadows and Light_, the concert video, of the live album by that name which I had to order from Canada. We also have a disc of Turkish singer Zara, which comes with a VCD but it's not really worth watching. I would put the _Scarlet Walk_ DVD in the same category. I watched it once and I was bored the first time through, which I don't consider a good sign. I have no desire to watch it again. - --Neile - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- neile@drizzle.com / neile@sff.net......http://www.sff.net/people/neile The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ......... http://www.ectoguide.org ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Feb 2003 10:01:21 -0800 (PST) From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: It's the OT season - hardly anything is released Paul Jensen wrote: > Mmmm - "The Hours" is an extraordinary film. I didn't expect to like it, as I adored the novel and usually I'm too critical of films of books I like so much to enjoy them, but I was thoroughly impressed with this. The performances were wonderful, especially Nicole Kidman as Virginia Woolf, which I did not expect. I was a little less impressed with the score, but then I find repetitive music--which is so much Glass's style--starts to grate on me quickly. - --Neile ------------------------------ Date: 6 Feb 2003 18:21:33 -0800 From: "Michael Pearce" Subject: Re: Sorta on, sorta off topic At 1:55 AM -0500 2/6/03, "Bill" wrote: >So, my question for you, dear ectophiles, is, what ectophilic music >videos on VCD and DVD do you recommend? There is an especially good Bjork from Region 2 that has stuff not on the Region 1 disks. I am sure the list will be weighing in with more DVDs than you thought possible. To find stuff I'd go straight to Amazon's DVD department and start entering all my favorite artists' names. You will discover yourself afflicted with EWS (Ecto Wallet Syndrome) in short order. And if you would like to get into the world of thumbing your nose at the greedy RIAA and MPAA's regional coding scam, return your DVD player and get a Daewoo or Apex that has been modified. Search Google for "Region-free DVD Players." Word of caution: The modification should not only allow you to ignore region coding, but to actually change the code of the box. Some disks are coded to fail on region-free players. I got mine from http://www.220-electronics.com/, but later discovered I paid the highest price in the market. Still, $239 wasn't bad considering it will also play VCDs, regular CDs, MP3-filled data disks, etc. It also has a trap for Macrovision. Cadence Carroll plays the djembe and guitar, and has a wonderful sweet voice. Her CD _Evolve_ was produced by The Kennedys, who are sort of her musical mentors. She's a fun performer and a really sweet person, and we're looking forward to having her here. Also performing is our good friend Kellie Lin Knott, a soon-to-be-Berklee grad (and Friend Of Paul Kim, which has to mean *something* ) who is simply phenomenal. This is guaranteed to be a great afternoon of music. The performance starts at 4 pm, and the suggested donation is only $10. There are still plenty of seats left, so if you'd like to come just e-mail me and I'll send back directions. Full information is at http//muzak.smoe.org.
