There's so much luck involved, so much commitment and paying of dues, so much that seems to depend on knowing the right people. It makes me wonder when my good karma will run out. :^) Anyway, I just wanted to share a few of my personal favorites with Ecto, that I haven't seen mentioned here yet (or maybe they have been, and I've been skimming too often!). Kristi Martel She grins when she sings. Watching her perform, it's impossible not to get swept up in the sheer joy of music -- in her deft piano playing and soaring, soul-rhythm-and-blues voice, love emanates from every note. A music teacher as well as a songwriter, in the song "Even Free" she writes, "I teach brown children I teach yellow and white and I teach red/I teach beauty, I teach love/but they call it piano." http://www.kmetal.net Reba Hasko Dramatic and quirky, a magnetic performer and an innovative pianist. The theatre and opera training shows, but so do the influences of Tori Amos and Ani DiFranco. Certainly she possesses Tori's talent for cryptic atmospherics -- I've yet to figure out what most of her songs are actually about, but they stay in my CD player anyway. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/rebahasko The Animators No female voices here, but Devon and Alex's intimate Simon-and-Garfunkel-esque harmonies are certainly compatible with Ecto sensibilities. The arrangements are rich, the melodies haunting, and Devon's great lyrics are occasionally as heartwrenching as they are clever. http://www.theanimators.com _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jan 2003 08:17:45 -0500 From: Valerie Richardson Subject: Laurie Anderson's survival kit For those of you in the greater NYC area, Laurie Anderson will be a guest this afternoon on the "Survival Kit" show. It's "official," with production credits listed on the box and stuff like that. But I have to say: If the video had been my introduction to Milla Jovovich's music I would have stopped there. Her CD, The Divine Comedy, sounds so much better than what's on the video, which sounds muddy. But -- it's still a good video. If you already like Milla J's music, which I do, then this video is worthwhile. She has a good time performing and it shows. - --Bill n.p. It was filmed in Austin (Liberty Lunch?) where she opened for, IIRC, Todd the Wet Sprocket. Is this any good, as video and as a performance? It looked rather, er, unofficial. And now off to watch the Yoko One videos which came in the mail today, and the David Lynch/Julee Cruise "Industrial Symphony", which I found, after a long search following my previous copy disappearing, for $3.95 in the same batch as the Milla. The only description that comes to mind is track one of Poe's haunted where she is talking into the answering machine. The difference is that Poe's album then goes somewhere beautiful whereas the Milla disc kinda sits there listening to her sing into an answering machine. very disappointing.
