Foretold in the Language of Dreams is available from ABSound (www.absound.ca) for $12.33 US and is listed as being in stock. Presumably this is cheaper than ordering it from Europe because of the exchange rate, and I suspect other Canadian online stores like HMV are carrying it too. Thanks to everyone who mentioned it. I love Natacha Atlas' music and had no idea she had a new recording out. JoAnn - -----Original Message----- From: Donald G. Keller [mailto:dgk@panix.com] Sent: Monday, January 13, 2003 9:24 PM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: n.atlas/foretold... Here's what I know about Natacha Atlas' =Foretold in the Language of Dream=, prior to actually having a copy in hand. It was released in Europe in August, but there's been no U.S. release as far as I can tell, nor is any New York record store carrying it as an import, hence the mailorder. One can preview it by visiting the Mantra Records website (www.mantrarecordings.com); on the Natacha Atlas page they have an entire 6-minute track for listening to. And on the French Amazon site (amazon.fr) they have 30-second samples of all the tracks. This is why I'm confident I'm going to like it. It's not a "regular" Natacha Atlas album; it's credited to "Natacha Atlas/Marc Eagleton Project," and she has described it in an online interview as "New Age." Anyone who has heard her albums will remember passages (sometimes at the beginning, sometimes partway through a song) where the dance beats are in abeyance and she improvises complicated vocal cadenzas over a drone. =Foretold...= appears to consist in its entirety of passages like that. Sounds good to me. More when the album arrives. P.S. According to news on the Mantra site, Natacha Atlas has been in the studio since at least last fall working on a new (presumably "regular") album to be released in 2003. (Sure would be swell if she toured over here after that...) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Jan 2003 09:27:38 -0800 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Not quite Ecto music but... That's why it's 8 out of 10. (But it actually may be fractionally more than that, depending on whether there are any female artists on the "8 Mile" soundtrack. - -- | jzitt@josephzitt.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | GPG: A4224EFA http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code / VoiceWAVE Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Jan 2003 19:29:16 -0500 From: meredith Subject: RE: n.atlas/foretold... I didn't see it listed at HMV Canada when I checked. Didn't think to check A&B Sound, since I scratched them off my list a while ago. Has anyone ordered online from A&B Sound recently (like, within the last year)? Did your order take less than 6 weeks to arrive? And have they had any more problems with getting hacked? FWIW, Don received his CD yesterday, a mere 5 days after amazon.co.uk shipped it. Not bad for the standard shipping option. Yeah, it came to $20 with the exchange rate and all, but at least amazon has a secure server. I'll probably be ordering one of these for myself soon. Just the bits I heard in the background over the phone with Don were tasty enough. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Holly Figueroa, 1/26/03 ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Jan 2003 18:26:25 -0800 From: Greg Bossert Subject: Re: n.atlas/foretold... HOLLY FIGUEROA Sunday, January 26, 2003 4:00 pm We're proud to present Indiegrrl founder Holly Figueroa, just a couple days after she celebrates the release of her brand new CD, _How It Is_ (featuring the likes of Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta on several tracks!) in NYC. Her bio says it best: "Holly started playing guitar in July 1999, when during her first tour, her guitar player broke his hip while pitching the tent before their first festival show...in front of ten thousand people. Not knowing a thing about playing guitar, she learned three chords in three days and finished her tour by herself. In her first year solo on the acoustic music circuit, she was wowing national audiences in listening rooms from The Bitter End in New York City, to Club Passim in Boston, to the Tractor Tavern in Seattle and Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles. Seattle based Figueroa has toured extensively throughout the US, greeting fans everywhere with her refreshing style of hybrid folk and blues, usually with her young daughter in tow." Her performances are always energetic and entertaining. We're really looking forward to having her here. "Figueroa's gaining recognition ...for her searing vocals and the hybrid folk/blues/pop sounds she coaxes out of her acoustic guitar." -- Seattle Times "Her performances feature a vocal style somewhere between sweet and growling. She can be mellow or sing earthy blues." -- John Roths, KEOS Music Director, College Station, TX For more info on Holly, including sound samples, see www.hollyfigueroa.com.
